Students and teachers began to regard one another as human beings. And co-operation, which is so necessary when working toward a goal, began to replace the tension that also existed in the past few years. Perhaps stimulated by last yearis threat of a closure . . . - C ,. . When students take educa- tion seriously, a new world opens to them. As this was hap- pening at Union, a change could immediately be seen: the people became interested in OTHER people. And a curiosity which had not existed since grade school was soon apparent . . . 'iff fifffff gait F I I , w 1 ,Q K if . . . All things that were of impor- tance to this time were also important to the students of this time. Interest took the form of active involvement as more students joined the move from lethargy. Students who once stayed in the background now made themselves heard. Even the aggressive ones changed, as they learned the meaning of the word 'compromisel 5-,X -1- 1 w iii I2 Greater numbers of the Union population, teachers as well as students, began to see things through the eyes of other people. ' With this new outlook on life, each person could look into his own soul and give an honest evaluation of it. The greatest joy one person can know is to understand him- self. Because they opened their minds, numbers of people here were able to experience this joy. Thus, the road towards under- standing others was begun. . N l -... Z ' V 1 N . i i . 'a l 1 nl , I , if. I U 1 N we' I t aiu in 'L A-I 'I At 78 years, Phoenix Union is the oldest high school in Arizona, and therefore has a proud past. As the all-city school, it has a shifting present. To the city, Phoenix Union has seemed the embodiment of city crime and youths' discontent. In gaining self-respect, Union is moving from this irreputable image to one of virtue and harmony. , ,, wi wi1wai,wf:w,:r-w,' , , . n ' il' , , .fs e n ' ff 1 gig ,Fil N-' sr ' 'W ,' 5 'fly will nxwygy I, tml 1 , x Jlswla ii' 2 ' gr if , Hz, ,lv .z s' A 1 - rt. gf' lm, S W S X xt slr t x. f' s W. The lack of preseason training cost the jayvees their first game against East. Through a team effort, the stituation was soon remc: died as proven in the next game, a win against South. One of the greatest assets was the team defense. In the words of Coach Thompson . . . We had the best defensive team in the city. Desire and Hus- tle, he continued, was quite promi- nent especially from such stalwarts as Richard Trevino, Chris Mayfield, Billy Hullaby and Mike Smiley. Most of the games were decided by one touchdown. This seems to indicate that the pack played on even terms with most of their foes. With a few breaks they could have come-out on the top. .
