Redskin Yearbook 1976-1977 Phoenix Indian High School P.0. Box 7188 Phoenix, Arizona 85011 Now that the school year has come to an end we look back on such things as: our arrival in August, the fun and seriousness of assemblies, the many athletic events we witnessed or took part in, the special events of American Indian Day, and everyday things like classwork and dorm details. All this helped make this a year that we will remember. Hira yticM Life on campus was a unique experience. There were our good times, sad times, and many times we have almost forgotten. Basically, this year was an endeavor we can remember as an exciting, enrich- ing experience. ACTXON BOAM Administration Dr. Noah A Men This past school year has been one of the most enjoyable and I hope productive years of my career. I see renewed dedication of our students and staff to performing at a higher level than ever before. Students are showing concern for the welfare of their classmates. Teachers are demanding and receiving higher quality of work in the class- room. These are ingredients that will provide experiences for Phoenix In- dian High School students that will serve them well for a lifetime. We sincerely hope the graduating seniors leave our school better pre- pared to make decisions about their future and better prepared to be suc- cessful in their chosen fields than any graduating class that has gone on before. We sincerely hope we can offer even better educational experiences for you underclass persons, who will be returning next year, than we have in the past. We further hope that all returning students will come back to school in August with a burning committment to learning. Good luck to you graduates; we love you all and wish you the best! A week later they ran in the annual Peaks Invitational at Buffalo Park at Flagstaff which is three miles. We were then off and running our duals and triangu- lar where we won five and lost two. The Bravettes concluded their season in the divisional tournament held in the Braves gym on November 6. The girls finished their season with the respective records of Varsity 7 wins, 8 losses; JV's 5 wins 4 losses. The season started Aug. 23. Many great strides were made since then. The girls improved their skills, developed new friendships, and enhanced their competi- tive spirit, it was a worthwhile season! Winning is usually measured within a program as far as success is concerned, but in the Braves season, winning bail games became a tough situation as they went through a tough schedule. Good individual play began to show as the season progressed but could not generate this play as a team. Gaining experience became the objective, and everyone seemed to enjoy this gaining of experience. The belief that the success found in our program came from our players who began the first day of practice and continued through the very last game. Losing is tough to take, but our players showed they had the heart and guts to never quit. 54 Head Coach A Hen Colbert Team Record JUNIOR VARSITY P.I. THEM VARSITY P.I. Ours was also spirit, pride, sportsmanship, hard work and practice, teamwork and victories; 14 wins, 9 losses, playing 23 games this year, the Bravettes averaged over 54 points per game. CONGRATULATIONS to Beverly Victor and Jeanette Guy for being selected to the All Conference team. If each of you put forth to the effort of life you did on the basketball floor, you will have great success in life. Mr. White Bravette's coach Frosh Basketball—Future Stars!? Although lacking in size, the freshmen basketball team showed promise for their upcoming years for P.I. After a long Christmas holiday, the previously undefeated frosh had a difficult time regain- ing their earlier conditioning and form. However, by the last month of season, the young Braves were showing some real potential for the future! Bot. Row L. to R. B. Brown, A. Vavages, J. Pakurza, R. Pohleahia, F. Cruz, Standing L. to R. M. Basketball The main purpose of the Junior Varsity basketball program is to prepare the underclassmen funda- mentally for varsity competition. Each player participated in every game this season for game experi- ence and considerable improvement was displayed by each player. If the Junior Varsity program continues to improve as it has this year, we should have many out- standing seasons for PJ.H.S. to look forward to. Bottom Row L. to R.: A. Cromwell, T. Bonito, I. Conference foes seemed to have the edge in heighth this year as the shorter Braves could not find a winning combination between offense and defense. This season produced a lot of playing experiences for many young players and this bring a brighter future for the next season. All players showed a lot of enthusiasm and desire during the season and never showed a lack of hustle. The coaches feel that with a little more concept of the game, Phoenix Indian High School could compete very well in basketball. 61 Grapplers Top Row L. to R.: R. Toro, P. Tapoof, J. Garcia, J. The months that followed were filled with recreation, activity, dorm responsibilities, and most important Education! 74 Registration was a little confusing for both new and returning students at P.I. It involved telling the regis- traryour name, tribe, address, parents names, and grade. The dormitory assignments were made. Many returning students were able to see familiar faces during Registra- tion; others met new friends; but for everyone present it was interesting! American Indian Day Miss Phoeniz Indian High School 1976 1977 PAMELA MATTZ American Indian Day was a very eventful day at P.I. Many visitors came to witness and take part in such things as games and a raffle. The P.I. Apache and Hopi clubs took a big part in making the day a success by performing traditional dances. Among the many events was the Miss P.I. pageant in which the girls of various tribes competed to reign as Miss P.I. for the 1976 77 school year. All this and more provided a great deal of entertainment for student, staff, and respective vistors. 76 Indian Day..............Brought with it, many events and many People . • • . Silva were awarded highest honor roll for the second quarter. (Missing is V. Selestewa.) Pam Mattz was crowned Miss P.I.H.S. (1976-77) by former Miss P.I., Florence Gloshay. Ruppert Lopez finished 2nd in the divisional tournament and 4th in the State Class A Tourney, at 112 pounds. Dedicated and In Memory Of When we saw you for the first time, We knew there was a purpose. That was giving us the chance to know one -another. There are so many things that made us know you really cared. You showed us in many things you did every -day. If we had a problem or even a doubt, you were always willing to help us out. You gave so much of yourself to try and make us understand. You taught us things we never really knew, and we're so thankful we had the chance to get to know you. We'll miss your smiling face and your understanding ways. We'll miss the talks we used to have with you, and the funny things you used to say and do. But now I guess we'll have to try and understand, myself, my friends, without your helping hand. Your FRIENDSHIP will always hold a place in our hearts, as well as many others, And this poem is dedicated to you, our FRIENDS, FILLED WITH ALL THE LOVE WE CAN EVER GIVE! Without new power plants. Arizonans will face an energy shortage in the 1980's Arizona could be heading for a serious energy shortage In the 1980’s. APS Is working to prevent that energy shortage. But we can’t count on natural gas and oil alone to produce the electricity you'll need. The sources are unreliable, the costs are constantly rising. There are supplies of low-cost coal. And we’re going to use coal to generate electricity without harming the environment. There's an even lower-cost fuel we can use. Nuclear energy. We’ll have that ready in 1982 when Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station starts producing electricity We're also looking at more hydroelectric power and work- ing on solar energy. But in the years to come, your basic sources of electricity will be nuclear and coal power plants. For more facts, write the APS Energy Information Center. Arizona Public Service Company P. O. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet, To make all your friends feel that there is something in them, To look at the sunnyside of everything and make your wish come true, To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and expect only the best, To be just as enthusiatic about the success of others as you are about your own, To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future, To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, too happy to permit the presence of trouble. INDIAN So What! I'm Indian, I'm not ashamed. I've all the friends, and all the games. They always say we misunderstand. Have they ever lent a helping hand? The way we grow, the way we learn, the places we live, the streets we turn were always called the hard-core kind. They think like us, but with no-mind. Our lifestyles, the poorest around without some guidance, the truth ain't found. Our attitudes are like the bee. When life is found, the Indian is free. So, someday, when we're on our feet, The Whiteman and the Indian will meet, One quote shall reign, like bark on trees, The Indians were down, but now we're free. 99 Autographs Amen! We made it through another year. Good job, Pal!
