THE 1964 PHOENIX REDSKIN Phoenix Indian School Phoenix, Arizona GLENN C. LUNDEEN The Challenge Graduating as seniors marks an end to your undergraduate work at the Phoenix Indian School and the beginning of a new and very challenging period in your life. Members of the school staff have worked very closely with you these several years in helping you prepare for this new challenge. The finest in instructional materials, equipment and — more recently — facilities, have been yours for the asking. The school staff has eagerly enrolled in summer schools and in in-service training pro- grams so that you could be well informed on the very latest trends in education and employment. Well qualified staff members have provided excellent counseling and guidance services as a part of your daily living so that with each passing year, more and more responsibility could be placed on your shoulders. Now we are confident that you can move away from this environment and accept the new with confidence and understanding. The world of automation is a chal- lenge to all of us. Let us move down the road with confidence, knowing that our program of training has equipped you with the proper tools. Your parents, the faculty, and the community, are behind you every step of the way. We are proud to have had a part in your lives and hope you will make it a point to keep in touch with us. GLENN C. LUNDEEN Superintendent ADMINISTRATION Greetings We are living in an amazing world; a world that is becoming more and more complex. The Phoenix Indian School has offered you the kind of training that will help you adjust to the many changes that you will encounter. We expect you to become self-supporting and contributing citizens in your community. You have a good foundation for success in later life. You have been fortunate to attend a school that holds to high standards as Phoenix Indian School does. You have had adequate experiences in the academic, vocational and citizenship areas. Actual participation in school activities have taught you the kind of citizenship which is needed in any community where you wish to live. Some of you will go directly into jobs; others will continue in school and secure further training. You have my best wishes wherever you go, whatever you do. JAMES D WALLACE Principal - 3 - JAMES D. WALLACE THE SENIOR CLASS 1964 Mr. Ellis Senior Sponsor Mrs. laffoon Senior Sponsor Radford Quamahongnewa Senior Class President CLASS HISTORY'64 One hundred seventy-three seniors — the largest graduating class ever — will receive diplomas on May 19. There will be among you mixed feelings of sadness and joy. Sadness because for some of you your paths or progress, however well planned, will never meet again. There will also be much joy among you because you have earned a high school diploma which will signify that you are prepared to get on with the important task of getting ahead. Your talents are varied. Some of you will pursue higher education in the arts and sciences. Others among you will seek further training in the indus- trial arts. Another group will go immediately into industry and apply your skill in the highly competitive labor market. Your diversified talents should guarantee many of you cultural and social advantages. Twenty-one of you are members of the senior band. Twenty- eight are in the chorus. Fifty-eight of you have won recognition in various fields of sports. Five seniors, members of the varsity basketball team gave splendid performances on the hardwood court. You seniors have contrib- uted your share to the success of the basketball, football, baseball, wrest- ling, and track teams Your diploma will mean that you are ready to begin to carve a respectable place for yourself in a world that demands the application of highly devel- oped skills to win success as you journey along a rugged path to your chosen objective. May success crown your efforts. AUTOGRAPHS SENIOR ACTIVITIES 24 - SENIOR ACTIVITIES - 25 - Do-si-do - 26 - THE JUNIOR CLASS The Junior Class is on the up-swing again this year, over two hundred students have their names on seven homeroom rosters. The well dressed junior class is headed by ambitious, active officers: President, Harry D. Yazzie; Vice-president, Herbert Bennally; Secretary, Leona Gashy- tewa; and Warren Satala, Treasurer. Warreniater accepted an office in the student council and the class elected Joseph Laban to fill the office of Junior Class Treasurer. Major class activities for the year included a semi- formal on November 16. The theme of the dance was Past and Immediate High Spots with decorations showing both the old and the new school highlights. The Junior Class also sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom April 18 and treated the invited senior class royally as their last offering to the graduating class. Many juniors have represented the class and the school well with honors, positions, and awards. We hope they will do even better next year as seniors. Here are just a few of individual representatives: Danny Honanie as Jun- ior Rotarian; Janice Carl our Teens Against Polio repre- sentative; Lois Enos, Loretta Blackhorse, and Warren Satala were members of the Inter-High School Brotherhood Coun- cil; Malinda Teller was among the students that attended the Navajo Youth Conference at Window Rock; Leona Gashytewa and Adrinne Koyiyumptewa were present at the Interscholastic Press Conference at Maryvale High School; and of course there were the junior boys on the varsity teams.
