The meI'T1lDSI'S of the Sdfld Prints staff dedicate this i952 yearbook to the students of Phoenix College- to the Phoenix College student body because of its earnest belief in democracy, for its sincere effort in making demo- cracy work on this campus, for its intelligent use of co-operation in solving student problems, for its insistence that all individuals, and members of all student groups, be active in behalf of the total student group, and for being persistent that all members of the student body be rewarded for their individual contributions to the welfare of the total campus group. This, the members of Sand Prints staff feel, is a real, living, working, and growing democracy-a type of democracy that can survive the buffeting of all autocracies. Mr. E. B. Watts fknown to most people as Boots l has developed our' college aeronautics department into one of Amer- ica's finest flying schools. Through the co-operation of Sky Harbor, located iust east of Phoenix, PC has the only flying course solely incor- porated within any school in the country! Ground school is taken by regular course but flight training may be done through the college aviation club, Wings and Goggles. Due to growing interests and oppor- tunities for both private and commercial flying, our school for air- minded students has become one of the best in the Civil Aeronautics Association. At night when the streets of the cities and small towns are silent and seem deserted, impor- tant things are happening. Midnight oil is actually burning on our PC Campus every Tuesday and Thursday evening. Courses in business administra- tion, art, science, philosophy, home making, iour- nalism, and language are all a part of education's role. The superb passing of former A.S.C. quarterback, Bob Hendricks, and a squad of hard running collegians dominated the contest. Rolling up 528 yards total offense, the Bears turned in their lone triumph of the season September 29 at Mont- gomery Stadium by over-whelming the Dixie Flyers of St. George, Utah, 39-13. With only two lettermen back from last year's crack five the Bruins did a complete flip in the cage sport, losing their first eight games. With only five wins in 28 games the Bears came through with two final triumphs on March 4 and 6 to raise their season average to .223, com- pared to the 1950-51 percentage of .632. The locals began with three letterwinners and one other veteran but after the first seven games guard Frank Rodriguez entered the navy. This left only Virgil Robertson and Hugh Kelly, along with Ray Miller, as the only representatives of the 1951 squad. Robertson emerged as the top scorer of the season, canning 395 points for an average of 13.6 counters per contest, to compile one of the highest totals in Phoenix College's history. In his two years here Virgil meshed 698 points. Eleven of the Bruins' losses came at the hand of strong service teams while the collegians man- aged to take 7 of 19 encounters against other schools. Although failing in the Azusa tourney in California, being eliminated in three games, the Bears, with only four lettermen back from 1951, continued their winning ways, compiling nearly as perfect a record as the previous year's squad, which won 17 of 22 contests. Pitcher Gary Prentice, shortstop-catcher Hugh Kelly, and catchers Phil Keyes and Jim Tussey were the only representa- tives from last year. Freshmen hurlers Bill Glaze, Jim Brun- dage and Bobby Black were the outstanding chuckers. Glaze doubled in the outfield when not on the mound, being one of the leading hitters as well as the top pitcher. Kelly and Keyes handled the catching chores with Kelly also filling in brilliantly at shortstop. Black, Norman Farmer, Gene Scott, Bobby Cruz, J. D.
