Gould, Co-Manager, The Roost is Phoenix High School's paperback book store. Here one may choose a book from a very wide selection ranging from dramatic literature like Before I Sleep by Dr. Tom Dooley to the comical books of Charlie Brown. All the books are ordered from a company on credit and placed on racks about the room which students may visit during any free period. lf the books they would like are not available, they may request having them obtained. The Roost is run by a very efficient staff of four- teen members led by a manager, Cathy Gould, and an advisor, Mr. Gay. The Roost operates mainly to aid in the building up of the yearbook fund. The success of the book store has enabled the yearbook staff to avoid in- creasing the subscription cost of the Phoenician.

Student library assistants make an im- portant contribution to the operation of a school library. They, in turn, receive signifi- cant benefits in terms of skills, social hab- its, and personal satisfaction. Besides learning many of the fundamentals of li- brarianship, student volunteers develop a sense of responsibility and a quality of leadership. They learn to have a coopera- tive attitude, an ability to follow directions, and an interest in people as well as in books. Many professional librarians be- came interested in their career while working in a high school library. LIBRARY STAFF Flrst Row: D. Boyle, C. Madden, P. Culp, J. DiSalvo, K. Chittenden.
