The main activity of the class was the Winter Frolic Dance with music provided by the Monterays. Several members were inducted into National Junior Honor Society. These included Sue Benoit, Bruce Coville, Naomi Ely, Rosie Giordanella, Helen Huntley, Pam Ingham, Laura LaBarge, John Michels, Mary Murtagh, Betty Schlecht, Charles Smart and Sheridan Vickery. The class was well represented in many activities and sports. 5 lSOPHEMORES? 35 5 As SOPHOMORES, the Class held two dances- Spring Fever and Surf- ing Safari , which turned out to be two of the most successful dances of that year. Again school activities and sports saw the participation of many members of the Class. This was especially evident at Awards Day when many Sopho- mores received awards. i ns 33 l l l NATIONAL HQ? SOC? X 'I s 1 , 1 6 P is L5 When the Class of I968 became JUNIORS, the rest of the Student body really began to sit up and take notice. Early in the year, the Prom committee was set up with Pam Ingham and Perry Biancavilla as Co-chairmen. Under their capable leadership, the Prom- Maiestic Moonlight -turned out to be a tre- mendous success. Music was furnished by Sox Tiffault's Band and the decora- tions were simply beautiful. That year, the Class became very successful in the financial area. They held one dance, The Yearbook Dance and initiated the Tom Wat Plan. This provided the Class with funds that bulged the Class treasury to an all-time high. National Senior Honor Society inducted Sue Benoit, Bruce Coville, The Naomi Ely, Helen Huntley, Pam Ingham, Mary Murtagh, Betty Schlecht and Sheridan Vickery. These were to be followed by John Michels and JoAnn Ken- yon the following year. School activities found Juniors participating in every field and members of the class pushed many of the teams to victory. Perhaps the most important event of the year was the receipt of class rings. Gould, Co-Manager, The Roost is Phoenix High School's paperback book store. Here one may choose a book from a very wide selection ranging from dramatic literature like Before I Sleep by Dr. Tom Dooley to the comical books of Charlie Brown. All the books are ordered from a company on credit and placed on racks about the room which students may visit during any free period. lf the books they would like are not available, they may request having them obtained. The Roost is run by a very efficient staff of four- teen members led by a manager, Cathy Gould, and an advisor, Mr. Gay. The Roost operates mainly to aid in the building up of the yearbook fund. The success of the book store has enabled the yearbook staff to avoid in- creasing the subscription cost of the Phoenician. Student library assistants make an im- portant contribution to the operation of a school library. They, in turn, receive signifi- cant benefits in terms of skills, social hab- its, and personal satisfaction. Besides learning many of the fundamentals of li- brarianship, student volunteers develop a sense of responsibility and a quality of leadership. They learn to have a coopera- tive attitude, an ability to follow directions, and an interest in people as well as in books. Many professional librarians be- came interested in their career while working in a high school library. LIBRARY STAFF Flrst Row: D. Boyle, C. Madden, P. Culp, J. DiSalvo, K. Chittenden. V, V ,, , W GERMAN CLUB German Club, under the capable leadership of its elected officers and the advisor, Mr. Farrell, has the purpose of acquainting its members with the cus- toms, the geography, and, most of all, the people of Germany. To be eligible for membership, it is re- quired only that one is a German student and has sincere interest in the club's activities. The highlight of this year's activities was the es- tablishment of the club's Pen Pal Program. Anyone with the desire received the name, age, and ad- dress of a student in Germany. Although the pen pal writes in English, members can also practice Ger- man by writing back in German. This program has proved to be successful and will be repeated in fu- ture years. The club also participated in the Student Council Winter Carnival, purchased pins for its members, and worked to revise its constitution. This year the officers are Bob Williams, President, Lori Helbock, Vice-President, June Knickerbocker, Secretary, and Brian Caswell, Treasurer. The French Club, I Alliance Francaise of Phoenix High School, was founded in 1961 to promote an interest in French culture and the French language. The members have attended French plays, had slides and movies, lis- tened to native speakers and records, and put on French assemblies. The two big events of the year are a French Christmas caroling party followed by a French meal at some member's home. In the spring the club has dinner at a French restaurant. The French Club, on Awards Day, offers a cup to the member of the ninth-grade class who has the highest average, and recognizes other high av- erages in the junior high school. At commencement five dollars is presented to the student who has received the highest mark on the Regents, provided it is a 90 or above. Vive La France! FRENCH CLUB First Row: J. Officers are: Charlie Marks, president, Jean Grabowski, vice-president, Marsha Kornbluth, secretary, Bill Bowman, treasurer, cmd Pauline Farling, historian. The clulo's main activity was the annual Yorker Conven- tion, this year held in Lake Placid. The History Club took with them their annual project, a model of the Marrion River Carry Railroad, shortest in the world. The supporting project was the showing of children's movies on Saturday mornings. Other activities included a trip to the Adirondack Museum and participation in the Winter Carnival. First Row: P. The club's Christmas proiect involved making Santa iars and stockings. The officers and Miss Hooker deliv- ered these gifts to the Children's Ward at Oswego Hos- pital. Also during the Christmas season the girls held a party for its members. Refreshments were enioyed along with the exchanging of gifts, with a special gift presen- tation to Miss Hooker. This year's Concert Choir promises to be as good a group, if not the best, that has ever sung for Phoenix. The potential is there. This year we have as large a number of boys as we have ever had and this adds a great deal to the choir. True, there are rough spots, but the desire is there. Good training in the lower grades is starting to show results. Many Choir members participated in County and All-State activities. In addition to the annual Winter and Spring concerts and assem- blies, the Concert Choir plans to compete in the Spring Festival. We are sure that they will represent Phoenix well. First Row: V. Returning members have added the experience and initiative that is so vital to any successful organization. The band has a full schedule, including Sr. and Jr. High assemblies, exchange concerts, Cornell Band Day, and County and All-State activities. Two new features have been added to the band this year. The for- mation of a Pep Band to play at assemblies and games has added greatly to the school spirit. Also, the band's increased marching activities will be enhanced by the presence ot the newly-formed Color Guard. T i First Row: A. Luke, L. Regal, K. Dietz. Second Row: M. Potter, A. Parker, B. OSWEGO COU NTY FOCTBALL CHAMPS A good PGSSW19 Olfmn Fine blocking and running NICK DURR REID SMITH After an opening loss to Canastota, the Phoenix Fire- birds went on to victory over Weedsport and Moravia in pre-season non-league play. The opening of league competition brought defeat by Central Square-the only league loss of the season. Profiting from their mistakes, the Firebirds pushed forward, rampaging over the rest of Oswego County. Pulaski, Hannibal, Mexico and APW fell and were set back for minus yardage. As a result of the team's remarkable perseverance, the season ended in a three-way tie for the championship with Mexico and Central Square, with a season's record of six wins and two losses. Greg Hartranft represented Phoenix on the All- County offensive team, Bob Goldych, Gary Hartranft and BOB GOLDYCH GREG HARTRANFT GARY HARTRAN FT DANA CLARY David Cromie were named to the defensive team. The Firebirds also had four of the squad with honorable mention: Jim Durr for offense and Bill Goldych, Nick Durr and Wayne Crutchly for defense. The Firebirds are losing eight seniors this season. Four of these are from the starting backfield: quarter- back Greg Hartranft, halfbacks Bob Goldych, and Dana Clary and fullback Reid Smith. The other four were from the line: ends Gary Hartranft and Nick Durr, tackles Wayne Morris and Joey Sweeney. This will hurt the team, but the Firebirds will retain starters David Cromie, Brian Dick, Jim Durr, Bill Goldych, Wayne Crutchly, Larry Allen and Jimmy McArdell to lead the team into another suc- cessful season.
