SECTION lll CHAMPIONS The Phoenix Firebirds won many honors last season, capturing both the Oswego County and New York State Section lll championships. ln league competition, Firebirds scored ten victories, twice defeating rival Central Square, and losing only to Hannibal and Oswego Catholic. Phoenix pitching skill held opposing hitters to an average of only two hits per game, while our men maintained a combined team batting average of over .300. The high point of the season came at the state play-offs where we triumphed over Watertown, llion, and Fayetteville-IVlan- lius to take the Section lll title. Graduation again took its toll of experienced players. Phoenix has suffered the loss of starting pitchers Dick Woodridge and Greg Lowe, catcher Ronald Gonsalus, infielders George Simons and Don DenBleyker, and outfielders Floyd Mills and Alan Townsend. However, hopes are high for another fine season, sparked by returning veterans Gary and Barry French, lim Scalisi, and Charles Dreer.
