Those of us who have worked together with Mrs. Generous, or who have been taught by her, have a more complete and meaningful impression of this woman whose enthusiasm and industry seem unlimited, whose undertakings are blended with optimism and a sense of humor, and whose tolerance of the infamous teenager is coupled with personal concern and understanding. Mrs. Generous is a teacher not only in the scholarly sense of the word, but, just as important, in the respect that she has instructed many of us in the art of self-reliance, a virtue not to be gained from a textbook. By her encourage- ment, many students have been made aware of their talents and now know how to apply these abilities. The Class of 1961 has been fortunate to have Mrs. Generous as an advisor since 1957. Her capable and untiring efforts have been extremely valuable to us, particularly this year when her unselfish guidance proved essential to the making of this yearbook. It is with the honor, respect, and gratitude due her that this Junior Class dedicates their yearbook to Mrs. Edith F. Generous. Phoenicion Staff '41 First Row: E. Gorthey, S. Hoppe, J. Farrell, D. Crowley, L. Rancier, S. Bannister. Second Row: J. Sullivan, A. Denery, R. Lamson, B. Forbes, P. Saari, P. Miller, T. Candee. Absent: R. Case. Foreword Today we follow, tomorrow we lead. . . . To the stars through difficulties. . . . They conquer who believe they can. These are indeed noble mottoes and worthy goals for members of a gradua- ting class. But the familiar class motto and other such isolated reminders are poor devices for recalling easily forgotten, though very significant, high school expe- riences. The l96O Phoenician is your means of preserving these meaningful memories. We, the Class of l96l, believe that we have captured in the 1960 Phoenician true and provoking impressions of the school year for your lasting reference. Our yearbook represents a laboriously won, though truly gratifying,achieve- ment of this Junior Class. With it, we are sure you will spend many enioyable and perhaps sentimental hours. 6-0 Admir1i5y'c:11kiQrw Didikf Supedntendent Miss Aura A. Cole Boord of Education an ' i ef-sr Seated: Mr. Alfred Schau, Mrs. Leah Micheis, Mrs. Doris Ailanson, Mr. William Hiiboin. Sfanding: Mr. Edward O'Brien, Mr. Ray Chesbro, Mr. Elijah Henderson, Mr. Wayne Huntley. Absent: Mr. Arthur Ward, Mr. Jack Luke. ' , Z!!! President Mr. Robert Coulfer Supervising Principal Modern Design Works of man are never static. Public buildings and homes have been built, music has been written, sculptures have been chiselled, pictures have been painted, furniture has been designed and vehicles have been constructed. What has been done has been done. Either we must slavishly copy or we must originate. There is ample evidence on every hand that we have chosen the latter course. Modern art, music and sculpture seem to reflect the tension and turmoil of our times and are not always pleasing to many. Modern homes, with modern decorations and furniture are certainly different from those of the past, are efficient and are usually most acceptable. And modern cars, with their fantastic body styles, appeal to the young and agile. Yes, Modern Design encompasses us. It behooves us to enioy it, for we shall live with it for a long time. Student This year's Student Council began the school year with its annual project of selling S.A.P. tickets to the student body. This provided students a wonderful opportunity to attend all athletic events and certain other group activities at a large financial saving to them. The income from this sale also allowed our council to undertake, and carry out successfully, the various worth-while activities which have helped to make our student body so proud of our school and our council. Our council next operated a booth at the fun-filled three-day Community Fair held last fall. All monies earned at this booth were donated to the community to aid in the construction of a swimming pool. This activ- ity provided a wonderful opportunity for our council to actively participate in, and help support, a communi- ty-wide project. The annual Halloween masquerade parties were again held at the John C. Birdlebough School for high school students and at the Sweet Memorial Building for junior high students. Games, dancing, cider and dough- nuts, decorationseall provided an evening of fun. In case you are skeptical, ask the junior high! They had a night to remember! Seated: B. Strong, C. Garbutt, L. Terry, R. M Council At Christmas-time toys were collected and donat- ed to children of an orphanage. In these times of so much poor publicity concerning teenagers, the year- book staff would especially like to thank the council for such a worthy project. It is an activity such as this which gives us, the student body, prestige in the eyes of the public and pride in ourselves as human beings. The annual Valentine Dance was well done though, unfortunately, poorly attended. Too bad, for the de- corations were fine and the music excellent. The high- light of the evening was the grand march and the subsequent crowning of the King and Queen - Ronnie Brown and Barbara Strong. Once again the council has undertaken the project of financing the program which would enable another foreign student to attend our school. On March 25 a hilarious and entertaining student-faculty game was held, and the proceeds of this game greatly aided the foreign student fund. The council has taken giant steps this year and they haven't halted yet. Even now, they are making plans for the annual, ever-popular Athletic Banquet. Thank you, Student Council, for a job well done! Senior Honor Society L if Firs1 Row: D. Crowley, J. Williamson. Second Row: S, Kimball, L. Farnholiz, N. Gray, J. Beckley, S. Bannisier, G. Nelson.
