We stumbled and fumbled our way to a 13-9 victory, made possible by a tough defense. Our next game was with Edison. Although we had beaten them the last 3 meetings the game proved to be a learning experience. Edison ran up and down the field at will and won, going away 27-1 1. The following week our opponent was 1 ranked Long Beach Poly. We soon found out why they were selected California ' s per-season 1 team. The hitting was tremen- dous and Poly played brilliantly, as they went on to win 19-10. Our next game with Kennedy proved to be a momentum builder. Earl Saunders moved from defense to play tailback in the I formation. Danny Gunderson, Ed Lalau, and Mike Padilla were new addtions to our of- fense. The result was a 49-6 rout by the Pilots. HEME «CGJtiJ Our league season began with arch rival Carson. The new team played hard, but we were not able to over- come the Colts, who played very well and made the fewest mistakes. This resulted in a 6-0 defeat for the Pilots. After the game our players knew that if they could continue to improve we would have high hopes of getting into the playoffs. Successive victories over league rivals Fremont, Dorsey, Crenshaw, and Gardena provided the spark needed to ignite the Pilots toward the City Championship. ifr- i£viLJij iw m mmM In the playoff games against Kennedy and San Fernando the Pilots gained con- fidence on offense while the defense re- mained tough and dominating. The Cham- pionship game against Carson was a real challenge. The Lady Pilots, ranked 3rd in the city, ended their season with a loss to Washington in the semi-final game at the Sports Arena. The Lady Pilots ended their season with an 18-5 overall ' record, the best record in the last seven years. The Lady Pilots were lead by Tracey Young, Sheree Corniel, Lisa Nance and Adella Head who all made 1st team all League. Robin Nelson also was a dominating factor during the season but was plagued with an injury that sidelined her for the Play-Offs. Robin made 2nd Team All-League along with Geannine Hobbs and Rani Reado. It was a great season for the Lady Hoopsters and the Seniors will be greatly missed. Their leadership should help the returning players to improve record, return to the Sports Arena and stop the Kennedy Dynasty. — V , - ; GIRLS ' BASKETBALL JUNIOR VARQITY ACTION Picture Cap ions: Pg. 218: Upper Left: Lisa Nance shoots a jump shot.
