Pinpoint- ing the beginning of the change in Wildcatland would take computers, slide rules? tons of paper, and a million pens. Apollo 11's landing on the surface of the moon, taking that giant step, proba- bly best points to the start of the new Phillis Wheatley High society. For the moonls glisten seemed a little brighter as did the future of all Wheatleyites. Aiding in the enlightenment of the citizenry were two outstanding Apollo flight instructors of social science. MRS. PEARL C. SUEL, who was requested by our omnipotent school board to gather data on Afro-American history, taught courses in Black Studies. Comparative World Government classes, held each day for two hours, began this year under the supervision of MR. DONALD BOULDING. The advancing and in- triguing field of computer mathematics found receptive ears in Wildcatland. Mathematician FREDERICK CAR- VIN piloted the class. When Wheatleyites returned from a long, hot summer, they discovered an air-conditioning unit under construc- tion with a note attached, Cool it, Baby, cool itll' 4 i E Speaking of memzgef . . . The vernacular, slangs and idiomatic expressions grew to a sudden vividness. There was, Sock it to me, Keep the faith, Baby, I can dig it, Ring my chimesf, Do your thing, and Right on. Skirt lengths had their ups and downs on campus. Girls sported the maxi, midi, mini, and micro. Footwear was by no means to be ignored. Sandals for both formal and informal attire, Swedish clogs and crushed leather pumps dominated the footwear depart- ment. The girls wore their naturals while the boys wore their Afros. In other departments of interest . . . Spring class valedictorian SHIRLEY FAYE BANKS outscored all other ROTC sponsors in city-wide competi- tion. The signal honor made her the first Black Brigade Sponsor in the histo- ry of the school system. The system will never be the same after the death of MR. DAVID BRAD- FORD. Known to the Wheatley family as Mr, Wlheatleyf, MR. BRADFORD served as director of student activities and teacher of social science. The class of ,65 in its dedication of the yearbook spoke of Mr. Brad, . . , one whose life became a shining example to us, one who has striven for right at all times, . . . one who has served with selfless- ness, one who has laid foundations of devotion in the hearts of many . . . Hundreds of Wheatley fans turned out at the University of Texas gymnasi- um to see the ,Cat Cagers clinch their third consecutive state basketball cham- pionship in Austin. - X 1 Wf-f--H - - si a if ? 5 W I Aga' What made the 1969-70 school year . ,, Z so unusual? It is difficult to explain or analyze. The best way to describe the change is in the song, We Did It Our eff-:gf , Way.,' And now the end is near And so we face the final curtain My friends, we'll say it clear We'll state our case of which we're certain We've lived a life that's full ,Ig 5 - We've traveled each and 3 every highway. X y And more, much more than this, We did it our way - W I , , f t v ii HMM H 7 VLA' . W VVAA i 1 ' f W W I -64- Regrets - we've had a few But then again, too few to mention We did what we had to do And saw it through without exemption. We planned each chartered course Each carefree step along the by-Way, And more, much more than this, We did it our way. iq 3 5 n K sf' -- www .uvfm iff as . ' :HE'?35,:'f. A -Q9?'i3f:5 T .ww ,fj , ' , JT We've lovedg we've laughed and cried Weive had our fill, our share of losing And now, as tears subside, We find it all amusing. To think we did all that And may We say, not in a shy way Oh, no, oh, no, not us We did it our way. Ola, yes, We did it our way . For what is a class? What have they got If not themselves? Then they have not To say the things They truly feel And not the words those who kneel. The records show We took the blows And did it our Way. For all of Wheatley, very good was not enough . . . Its goal is attained only after unremitting labor, only when human striving perforce admits it has done the best of which it is capable, when it admits that for the moment no more can be said. DAVID BRADFORD Social Science Instructor Director of Student Activities A great man has departed this world into a world of tranquility. We will miss him, but certain experiences we have shared with him and certain char- acteristics observed in him will never let us forgethhim. I can almost see him now telling one of his jokes while everyone holds his side with laughter. He had personality plus. He struck me as being quite frank and honest. Whatever he had on his mind he would let out spontaneously. Another of his traits was his lack of prejudice. He never singled out the smart from the not-so-smart or the thugs from the nices,' - everyone received the sympathetic, human touch of this great teacher. His unique teaching methods and his ability to establish rapport with his stu- dents made us look forward in gleeful anticipation to that time in our school career when we would be seniors so that we could sit in the shadow of Mr. Brad or Mr. Wheatley, as he was af- fectionately known to us. Our dear departed teacher's loyalty to Wheatley knew no bounds. MR. BRADFORD will always be remem- bered, loved and respected by all who knew him, particularly the thousands of students whose lives he touched and left richer by having known him. Milligan Thus ends a yearg but more than that, an era. The year ends with change of faces on faculty: Because of the equidistant plan for schools - a plan which drew many of our staff out for integration into predominately ,white schools Because of the death of MR. DAVID BRADFORD Because of the retirement of MR. JAMES DEAN, MRS. PRINCELLA MILLIGAN, and MRS. HAZEL YOUNG. We will miss them all. Particularly will we miss Prince,,' who had served on our faculty since the school's first year of inception to the end of the 1969-70 school year. She was the last of the original Wheatley faculty. The End M rl ll f My special thanks to DERWYN COOK and CRAIG THOMAS, A7 61 an two former WILDCAT editors whose devotion to their alma mater and to me brought them rushing to the rescue so that we could finally say, The End. Love, M. C. F. K ,,f' 71 , y, l F duh . ,, Q95 The Blood, Sweat, and Tears put into producing the '70 Wildcat have been for you, the readers. To my advisor, who was just beautiful. My staff . . . dependable. My family . . . there. My friends . . . friends . . . thank you all To those who criticize, I will say . . . There are some folks who do not seem to be able to cooperate. Their long suit is criticism - destructive and not constructive criticism, at that. To such I would quote the words of Edmund Burke: Applaud us when we run, console us when we fall, cheer us when we recover, but for God's sake, let us pass on! For we have tried to put together a Wildcat that covers the Love, Peace, and Happiness that each student ex- perienced during the past school year. Andiin it may there be a special something said, having special meaning to each of those students. Read it, Dig it . . . For 1970 was the year that was.
