CLASS POEM It was June twenty-second in nineteen-fifty, The time five o'clock and P'burg the city, When from the stadium arose such a din, I thought that my eardrums would burst from within. Was it bird, beast, or airplane, or yet superman, Or a flying saucer, perchance, on the lam? 'Twas the senior class of Phillipsburg High Who had come to bid teachers and friends goodbye, With valedictories and salutations, Speeches, narrations, orations, ovations, Telling us we're the hope of all nations. There are many here who can now remember How green we were that day in September When some came by foot and others by bus, Two hundred sixty-eight of us. We walked up the steps, through the big white door To become educated for four years more, Ready and eager to go to our classes, But not so eager for after school passes. Football, exams, and the Frosh Frolic, too, Our first class oiiicers pass in review. It seemed that the first year really flew. As gay sophomores we returned the next year N o longer filled with misgivings or fear- There were two hundred twenty-nine in allg We knew all the ropes and the tricks that fall. We plowed through geometry, it had its angle, We learned that a participle never should dangle. But the Sophomore Hop was our greatest thrill To which every Jack escorted his Jill. As Juniors we numbered two hundred and fourg Our responsibilities grew more and more. At the Turkey Day Classic we cheered on our team, To the Junior Prom took the girl of our dream. We waited a long time for our senior year, Then before we knew it, alas, it was here, With an undefeated football season, And a crazy day which defied all reason, Grub day and banquet by way of variety, Induction of the National Honor Society. And one hundred ninety-seven strong Now stand before this mighty throng. The old order always gives way to the new So we take this occasion to bid fond Adieu . Two classmates passed away too soon Gone-youth, goodness, hope and joy The same as we, but now so still God's motives-who can top? You are gone but not forgotten We miss you, rest assured We pause to pray and hope some day To meet where all's endured. In memory of Betty Loiacona and Richard Barron, two of our classmates who have passed away. 459711- HIGHLIGHTS OF SENIOR CLASS Sept. 1946 Nov. 1946 June 1947 Sept. 1947 Nov. 1947 June 1948 Sept. 1948 Oct. 1948 Nov. 1948 April 1949 Sept. 1949 The Class of 1950 camo upon the scene of P'burg H. Class of 1950 . ll J During your years at Phillips- ' burg High School you have studied A the history of our nation and QLJ learned the philosophies of our founding fathers. '- Your teachers have lmpressed E upon you the tremendous influence for good of such men as Washing- Q ton, Jefferson and Lincoln-how G they insisted that the individual was greater than the state, that the citizens of the United States were the government, not the governed. As you enter the field of higher education or the business World you will hear some people deny our system of government. They Will say let the government control everything and give us free this and free that. But they will not tell you that this also means that you must give up your freedom. Remember that this nation was founded on freedom-freedom of speech, action, religion. Remember, too, that under our present type of government we have attained the highest standard of living the world has ever known.
