A fr 1, 'walt' the phillipian annual production of phillips university enid, oklahoma 2 5.4 foreword The 1963 PHILLIPIAN was created to represent another year of your college career and to hold many of the memories you will cherish, forever. It is much like an outline of a term paper, being only a skeleton of what is to be said. The theme carried out is time. It is laid out in the sequence of a year, starting with the opening of school and finishing with grad- uation and the end of school. It is divided proportionately from a year to a day using morning as the beginning, noon as the middle, evening as the climax and night as the end. Even the classes are divided into these divisions. It is hoped that these pages will restore your memory and spirit for your school. Phillips University, being in its new building program and growth toward higher educa- tion, gives us, the students, a thrill to be a part of its beginning. This 1963 annual of Phillips University is dedi- cated to Mr. and Miss College. Through each day of the school year a pattern is formed: 8 a.m. to exhaustion, that is familiar to each and every stu- dent. lt is not to be called routine because each day brings something new and different. But each day starts and ends. Have any of your days been like this one? Everyone should he able to recognize part of it as his. I I V Bells have such a shrill sound some- times. This has been a year of significant growth. It has been symbolized by the new Library and Administration buildings rising in the center of our campus. In less visible and spectacular ways we have experienced, mental, moral, and spiritual growth. This has taken place in faculty study groups, classroom sessions. student organizations, committee meetings, casual conversations, and in- dividual pursuit. We have had high moments of exhilaration at concerts, dramas, chapel services, assemblies and athletic events. These experiences have become a part of each participating Phillipian. They have become a part of the spirit of Phillips Uni- versity. We pray that those who leave our halls this year. as well as those who remain in our academic community, may experience continuing 'cGrowth with Quality. KENNETI I LICWIS Dr. Lewis received his lVl.S. from Wichita University, and his Ph.D. from Oklahoma University. He came to Phillips University in 1946 to teach chemistry and science. ln the fall of l960 he was made acting dean anfl was then inaugurated as Dean of the College of the Arts in l96l. Dean Lewis claims his work as clean as his hobby. He is also xery active in church work and the Rotary Cluh. With the addition of its fourth wing, EBD now houses 250 residents, and there is no more need for East Hall. The newer residence hall is a tremendous improvement over the old. With its spacious, modernistic facilities, it is one of the most beautiful buildings on campus. It is a place near Nlonte Vista, Colorado where students spend seven weeks of their summer in a Camp earning college credit in art, science, geology, humanities and special problems. It is much like any summer school except it is in the out of doors in the mountains of Colorado. This year there were some eleven girls and thirteen boys with Prof. Baker, Dr. VVillianis and Prof. Randolph heading the classes. One of the many highlights was a field trip to Taos, New Mexico and the sand dunes near Alamosa, Colorado. Every week there were picnics and parties and good times for everyone. The Bible College Fellowship, devoted to the idea of Christian endeavor toward mankind, consists of Christian persons interested in service to others. Within this fellowship two groups have been founded to perform these tasks, the First Mile and Second Mile. To walk the First Mile is to do what should be done. We do this not because we are Christians, but because we are human beings. No merit is attached to the performance of duty, no glory except the inner glow of seeing a needed job well done.
