Zollars was a man who prayed a red-bricked, a white lime-trimmed prayer and students climbed lad- ders and sat on nail-kegged planks as they recited to Horne, Marshall, Reiter and Dyksterhuis. But the ladders symbol- ized climbing heightsg their mental horizons were wider each climb. OUR Books thrive on my shelves. But Mrs. Horne will remember when they took the space of three rooms in Old Main, cluttering up everything. Mr. Phillips gave us this building, we poured the cement floor by floor, and already we are outgrowing it, since Miss Kitchen came. 'hm m ., as-. RT I imagine a beautiful harmony, composed of expres- sion, top floor, up up, where we raised the roof a bit to put them there, painting and moulding toog piano, voice and a horn and a drum boom boom Oh, thereis music on the air. A GOOD Home for girls is the first thing to do, they said, especially Pa Z. or maybe Mrs. McGarvey, so they built the Athenian Hall. And they have good eats ever since, includ- ing dates, smothered kisses, brick I screams, and candy liash- lights, since the raising of the roof for room. 1 i ' l W W z-f,g,w , 4 H, take a good look at our Bible College. It was started as the President's home but was made a set of class rooms, indifferently heated!! The front porch is the place for any photograph. Cherries blossom and grow red in the front yard, then disappear-a mystery!! PRESIDENT McCash built a new home over here. It faces the campus. Once it was stucco finished. Now it is brick. Big southern windows, upstairs, overlook the new stadium. One day, as President McCash told us, he saw the best part of a football game for practically nothing but standing by a window looking out. I , WMM . V' ,. Q. H ah REES beyond this level, clouds and free air above Only water below. It is the wet, wet lake! A GYM is a funny thing because it is just an open space inclosed by dumb-bells. We got along without any gym, for years and then, we all dug deep into our cash and built us one. T if ,, 1 1, df M- r ylpf' if '4?!Pfv 'nefjQ,M gig, ' IM if gf DEAN MARSHALL. DEAN REITER, A. I ni THE 1931 PHILLIPIAN Sentara With faces bright, courage high and hopes keen the famous 1931 Seniors leave the fair portals of their Alma Mater and expectantly embark upon their futures. For one glorious instant, however, they pause to review their noteworthy record. In the good old Freshmen days, they won all three of their contests and were thus privileged not to wear the well-known caps in the spring. As Sophomores they proved themselves one of the most active and enthusiastic classes in the history of Phillips by wallopping the freshmen 6-0 in football, baptizing them in the lake in the Tug-io-War, and beating them 20-19 in basket ball. The bean-feed, the great Show of Shows and the Junior-Senior Banquet fthe first one of its kind held at the new Youngblood,j are milestones of the Junior year while the annual play So This ls Londonl' stands out as an achievement of the past year. The memorial left by the class, an exquisite trophy case, is welcomed as one of the most fitting and appreciated of all Senior gifts. Eluninrn No, we do not have any members of our classes who have become famous as authors, cooks, aviators or presidents but we do have a group of steady, hard working students in our class. If you might see the Junior class roll observation would disclose many of the well known and famous students on the P. U. campus listed there. This annual which you are now looking through is the product of a Junior class editor and his assis- tants, Qfrom various classes.J The Junior play, When's Your Birthday , was an interesting and entertaining comedy drama, also the result of effort among various members of this famous class. This play was given February 20 and proved ot be a complete success. Of course any Junior class of importance is duty bound to entertain the dignified Seniors at a banquet and as courteous Juniors all the necessities were provided with hopes which look forward to the future fJunior Classb. Then last but not least were all the various activities such as Weiner roasts, bacon frys, fattended by Dean Hahn, Alton Kaul, and Royal Humbert, a chili feeds, etc., all of which went to make the year seem like a successful attempt at being the Junior class of 1930-31, Snphumnrw At the beginning of the fall term the Sophomore class of 1930-31, elected its officers. Floyd Leggett was chosen president after much talking and wrangling. Mike Webber was selected vice-president, Leila Gartrell secretary and treasurer, and Jennie Mae McCray representative to the student council. The class has had a rather successful career, as an organization, since its birth as Freshmen in the fall of 1929. As Freshmen, it won all three of its contests with the Sophomores. As Sophomores, it has won one contest, lost one, and tied for the last. This has succeeded in causing the Freshmen of 1930-31 to wear their caps after the Easter season. The class has had activities that have kept a good spirit of unity and cooperation manifest throughout the school year. Judging by the trend of events, every one can certainly expect a great deal of the class of 1933, as it carries on its program for the last half of its college career. Zlirvalimen The fall of 1930 rolled around and Phillips University opened her arms to mother the largest brood of greenish hued children in her history. The crack of the belt and the melody of Beat the Gold Bugsv was the theme song until the so called mighty Sophs had their revenge for their former green days. At their Hrst meeting the ideas of cooperation for a finer Phillips and good sportsmanship were set forth and upheld until the end of the freshman career. Harold Stein was selected as headman, Lindin Rhodes, as vice president Frances Moore as Secretary and Treasurer and Don Anderson as Student Senate represen- tative. The vacancies in the Znd, semester were filled by Allan Goff, Prefidenq, and. Grant Wilson as Student Senate representative. On a windy day the Sophs did too much by tying. The spots of green were grounded, but not in spirit for in the football games a breath taking tie was had then in a grand and glorious finish the Sophs got a good wetting as a result from the tug-o-war. The Freshmen broke even and the question was, will the Freshmen wear their caps or not?l, Glad I-land I i gt. We THE 1931 Pi-in.LiPnAN A math Gbf igrainv Illm' Gbur Eagmaker Stat' We might well addy a word of praise for our Haymaker staff-for a change. For nearly thirty weeks now the Phillips Haymaker has been issuing Phillipian news to about 550 students and a wide out-of-town circulation, a service which only an elficient editor and his capable staff can appreciate. Each week we Phillipians receive our paper and go about our routine reading its contents. If it meets with our approval-no comment, if it does not meet with our approval we buttonhole the first fellow student we come to and call to his attention the noticed error or criticism-a mis- placed comma, too many advs., not enough jokes, my name is mis-spelledf, too much philosophy, not enough school life, etc., etc., etc., etc. It is no easy task to edit a paper in a school the size of Phillips where 'thot' news is not always available and before we make a criticism we should ask ourselves, Are we willing to help to make our paper a better publication by our own efforts and not by mere fault-Hndingin But let us preceed to something a little more pleasant. 'l al ll 1 l l I-lappyl' has maintained an efficient, working, well organized staff this year who are the i objects of my praise at this time. Once every week behind closed doors staff meetings have bsen held at which time work for the ensuing week has been outlined and assigned. The second game, played on Alton field, was much more interesting. The game went 16 innings and Stew Mulligan pitched the whole game. The endurance contest ended with O. C. U. ahead 6-5. This was the last home game of the season and was a good one. Dick Highfill went into the game with a broken thumb. Spike Leonard and Campbell were both out of sehool at the time and, naturally, out of the game. 0. C. V. had a good offense hut a mediocre defense. This aeeounts for the evenness of the seore. Tulsa University was the next to take advantage of our good nature. They heat us at Tulsa 5-3 and at Enid 4-1. Both games were good and were second only to the I6-inning fracas with the Goldhugs. The Haymakers got some good exercise when they played the Bisons. The Phillipians won lmoth games.
