They were very aggressive in the first half. At half time the score was Phillips 35 -Western 0, and when the Raiders came back on the field they were very confident that they would win the game. When the game ended, the Raiders walked off the field with a 35-0 victory. The Mustangs just couldn't make a comeback. The students praised the team for their excellent showing of sportsmanship at it's best. 47 Our Raiders — Win Or Lose Rams Blank Phillips A dropped punt was the big mistake of the game between the Raiders and the Ramsay Rams. The Ram quarterback, Chris Vacarclla, ran the only TD of the game. The score of 7 - 0 turned out to be the final score. Even though the Raiders tried, they couldn't push the ball over the Ramsay goal line in this their second loss in a row. Raiders Slaughter Herd The Raiders looked as if they just couldn't make it in the first lialf of their game against Parker, but the second half showed that a war is not won by one battle. James Davis cranked the Raiders War Machine by-making two interceptions which he ran for touchdowns. The offense didn't get it on until the third quarter. Robert Stewart scored the only offensive TD the entire game. Final 21-6. Raiders Make A Comeback The Raiders made a fantastic comeback in defeating the Wood lawn Colonels at Legion Field on Friday, Oct. 27. The student body was proud of the team for their fine exhibition of football technique. Final score. Phillips 26, Wood lawn 7. 49 Homecoming Spirits High On Homecoming night, November 2, the mighty Raiders clashed with the Hayes Pacesetters. The game opened with an explosion of excitement and anticipation of suspense. The Pacesetters’ arsenal included guided missle passes, long dropping bombs, and awesome blitzing running plays. Robert Stewart maneuvered his Raiders close several times but couldn't obtain victory. Raider receivers dropped Stewart bombs and the strategy of his running plays collapsed. General Bruce sent messages to the front, but the Raider War Machine seemed to stall out. Final score Hayes 18, Raiders 0. 51 Season Record Phil Ups... 8.....West End........20 Phillips... 32....Carver..........20 Phi Hips... 35....Western..........0 Phillips... 0.....Ensley..........16 Phillips... 0.....Ramsay.......... 7 PhilUps...20......Parker...........6 PhilUps... 6......Huffman.........34 PliilUps... 26....Woodlawn.... 7 Phillips... 0.....Hayes...........18 Phillips... 6.....Hueytown........21 52 Varsity ’72 Gregory Richardson Abraham Curry Cleophus Washington Ernest Burke Anthony Tate Robert Stewart James Davis Charles Baity Harry McGee Edwin Russell Robert Childress Samuel Jolly Johnny Mill Clarence Shelby John Watkins Clarence McConico David Jones Anthony Jones Fred Robinson Ronnie Denson Michael Williams Michael Smith John Eldridge Raymond Madison Elizah Floyd Kirby Davis Dwight Wilson Larry Tarver Erskine Brown Jimmy Watters Larry McMillan Johnny Beverly Earnest Long Kenneth Brock 53 Basketball Team Got A New Coach The 1972-73 Basketball team got a new coach, Mr. David L. Childers. Coach Childers is a very dedicated and energetic person. He puts all he has into his coaching. Coach Childers’ enthusiasm added to our school spirit as well as to that of the basketball team. One of the season’s high points was when the team won the invitational Tournament, for which they received a trophy.
