Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1970 volume:

For everything there is a beginning . . . Destined to have an end. Time is a stream made of events to be seen . . . to be carried away and others to come in their place . . . 2 3 Individuals whose lives interlock for a few hours of each day, a few years of each life hoping to fulfill a lifetime of enjoyment. Together we laugh, we talk, we learn, we meet new challenges in unity. 4 Crowded and alone, each asks why These times must end. for life Is not a flow of happiness. 5 6 Homecoming - a week of tradition, of excitement, of glory or defeat. . . initiations - a treasured feeling of superiority . . . honors - a reach for excellence. 7 All came so easily, perhaps difficult to let go, to leave behind. All enter this world in search of love. For some it is simple, for me, a task. I hardly lived while waiting for your eyes to find me. A soft hello and I became we. We touched and the world grew distant. It seemed to last forever, but the end is never seen 'til late.- To love, then lose bears a special pain — to find that one may borrow love yet never own it. 8 9 The impressionable years — a time of forceful enthusiasm — a quizzical mood suddenly becomes a purposeful direction in life. This is the beginning of ideals and the confidence that these ideals are true. If there is compassion in the heart of each individual, there will be order in the nation; when there is order in the nation, there will be peace in this world. II It is now that young people find time to stop and to ponder their lives - to ask why. At this early stage, a deeper meaning for life must be given search. In the presence of friends or in the silence of one's self, a new-found closeness to God by a simple prayer becomes a positive part of one's life, filling the vacuum of a searching soul. From the beginning to graduation is the time of preparation for the future. Qtartled by the flight of time, the senior is engulfed by a cold realization of a once distant fear which seems to have come too soon: Will I make the right decision? Curtain Going Up .............. page 17 Open Your Books To ............ page 29 “The Kick Off Is Taken In ...... page 49 Meeting Come To Order ......... page 77 Seniors Are Dismissed ...... I'd Like To Buy page I I I page 163 A part of wisdom is to know the value of now, before it is gone forever. 15 A DEDICATION TO THE FUTURE Within each soul a vision of the future is slowly being unfurled. With each passing minute one must look forward to the next. One must look to the future for a more understanding world. Together, as one. we must take a much greater step -a step toward peace, a step toward God. a step toward each other. The many activities were traditional, but also suspensefuL Halftime of the Homecoming Game revealed this year's queen. Miss Kathy LaRussa. Hopes were high mat the Raiders would be victorious, but defeat didn't dampen the spirit for the up coming games. Seniors will probably always remember that rain caused their last Homecoming Game to be postponed until Saturday night. BAND? 23 MAY DAY HAD BAD LUCK The Mirror Board-sponsored May Day festivities revealed many hidden talents. Field events, in which couples competed for prizes, provided laughter and suspense for those spectators brave enough to defy a downpour which began twenty minutes before the celebration did. The contests revealed which couples were best in a tricycle race, an egg throwing contest, a water pouring contest, and a sack race. For those who wanted to stay dry inside the gym, music was provided by the Daily Edition. The Mirror Board still has a beautiful trophy to award to the male member of the faculty with the Most Beautiful Legs on Campus - all of the contestants chickened out! A1 Lovoy took second place in egg throwing contest. WITH RAIN Contestants line up for the tricycle Grand Prix. 25 MISS PHILLIPS . . . A CHERI9HED TITLE, A MOMENT OF TEARFUL JOY 26 Parading through a wonderland of dreams, twenty-six pretty misses contended for the treasured title of Miss Phillips and Junior Miss Phillips. It was a wish granted by a fairy godmother for each of the girls. Each girl, adorned in yards of silk and satin, peering through glistening eyes, awaited the magic moment when the judges’ decisions would finally be announced. The evening was enchanted by the entertainment of the choir, R.O. T.C, drill team, girls’ chorus, Raiderettes, and individual vocalists and musicians. When tire events of the waking dream reached the conclusion, who was chosen the fairest of the fair? Whose heart was made to beat a little faster? Whose head received the circle of stars? These joys were experienced by Kay Franklin, Miss Phillips, and Claudia Jones, Junior Miss Phillips. r SENIORS TAKE DESERVED AWARDS 28 OFFICE FORMS MAIN OPERATIONAL AXIS A nucleus of activity, the main office staff meets the demands of approximately 1400 students and 80 faculty njembers. Pliillips got right down to business when George Tate stole the show with a spectacular 71 yaod sprint for a TD. While the excitement heightened, McAdory drove for a tying score of 6 - 6. With an anxious crowd Watching off-stage, McAdory desperately tried a conversion followed promptly by the curtain. CENTER LEFT: William Pompey catches ball carrier. ABOVE: George Nichols eliminates McAdory defender. 50 DESIRE RAN SECOND Block that kick! “ ... Fumbles! ... I’m cold - let's go home... Hey. Debbie; over here!” ... They've done it again! ... Dadgum! ... Get in step, Gloria! ... Get tough, defense, get tough! ... Where's the band? ... Can I share your blanket? The clash of teams, the final score, the clamor of victory, the silence of defeat - a football season is these, but much more. Our 1969 football season was disappointing statistically. Yet, our spirited enthusiasm ran high despite our constant losses. Each time our team stepped on the field, the spectators roared with a fresh supply of spirit. It may not have been our best year, but it can't be said we lost our faith. Win or lose, we backed them still, our Red Raiders of 1969. RAIDERS FEEL VIKING VICTORY Eager for a new opponent, Phillips met Huffman at newly built Lawson Field. Our spirits dulled as we watched Gordon Chambliss, Viking OB, show his varied talents. With the aid of fine running backs, the Vikings racked up 23 points. As the tide ebbed, Langston came through late in the fourth, threading the needle to Mike Colbert. David Hecr followed close behind with a perfect point after, producing our only seven points. UPPER LEFT: Get your foot outta my ... LOWER: Phillips defense in pursuit of McAdory back. 51 RAMS RAMBLE, 29-7 A promising 7-6 lead at the end of the first half slowly soured as Ramsay scored three more times in the second. Two long sustained drives coupled with two point conversions plus a 22 yard ramble, brought the score up to a resounding 29-7 defeat. The lone Raider tally was ground out by the efforts of Calvin Jackson, Mark Mizzell, and Johnny O'Rear. £ WALKER WINS ONE The Red Raiders struck out for Walker County, looking in the rain for the first win of the season. But, stumbling upon another loss, they graciously ended Walker's 32 game losing streak. With their defense following our every move, we failed to score at all. With applause for our defense, the game ended 8-0. Varsity Coach - Jerry Partridge VARSITY: (first row) David Shotts, Terry-Box, Jack Hill, Lynn O'Rcar, Jerry Casey, Mike Bahr, William Thomas, Earnest Spencer, William Pompcy; (second row) Coach Jerry Partridge, Ronald Powell, Richard Moore, Nick Fortunis, Mark Mizzell, Pat Hutto, Mike Talley, Joe Tarrantino, Willie Carter, Bill Masscngale; (third row) Coach Chipper Stewart, Ricky Cullen, Frankie Marshall, Randy Hettich, John O'Rear, Calvin Jackson, Toby Leamon, Tern1 Hall, George Tate, Coach Gerald Tuck; (fourth row) Mike Crum, Mike Colbert, James Flanagan, Junior Langston, George Nichols, Ward Ha ire Ison, Larry Reid, David Walker, David Heer. 53 WOODLAWN STAGES MASSACRE The Red Raiders spent a heartbroken night at tawson Field and bitterly watched as Woodlawn walked off with a 41-7 victory. Phillips felt a surge early in the game as they recovered two fumbles and drove to the Woodlawn 13. At this point, Woodlawn's Chuck Whittaker interrupted a Phillips' pass and killed all hopes of winning. The game was dominated by the Colonels, until the last four minutes when Johnny O'Rear spirited a 71 yard drive topped by a quiet walk into the end zone. David Hecr came through to ease the pain. 54 Hie Phillips underdogs seemingly buret forth showing more life than a hippie on pep pills as they met the Banks Jets. Remembering the sound thrashing of the past year, wc were determined to take revenge. The tug-of-war which ensued was filled with interceptions. Phillips scored after a magnificent 99 yard drive hammered out by George Tate and Calvin Jackson. Lynn O'Rcar's acrobatic catch of Junior Langston’s TD pass brought the score to 13-6. As victory seemed ours Banks moved for a touchdown and two-point conversion in a three minute span. With the game in our pocket. Banks pick-pocketed its way to a 14-13 victory. TOP: Anxious moments on sideline. LEFT: Pat Hutto foils the Jets point-after. ABOVE: Mark Mizzell is hot on the heels of Greg Luna. BANKS STEALS VICTORY 55 EN8LEY MUDDIES HOMECOMING Rains dampened Homecoming spirits, and enthusiasm floated away as Ensley took charge and slipped up with a 21-12 victory-. Phillips fought back with two spectacular plays. Langston hurled a 41 yarder to Lynn O'Rcar for our first TD. With less than two minutes to spare, Langston again navigated a perfect bomb to O’Rear. An ill-fated two point conversion was attempted. UPPER LEFT: Frankie Marshall reaches for PAT. UPPER RIGHT: George Tate eludes would-be tackier. BUTLER SERVES DEFEAT On a cold October night, the Raiders found - when they traveled to Huntsville - .all luck had been left at home. Butler met an easy win of 28-7 as they nabbed six fumbles and two interceptions of the Raiders. To top it all, a blocked punt added another TD to their list. Phillips managed to scrape up seven points late in the game with an around-the-end sprint by O'Rcar. ABOVE: O'Rear reaches for TD pass. RIGHT: Coach Chipper Stewart considers next offensive drive. LOWER LEFT: A gift inspires victory. DEATH KNELL RINGS FOR LIONS Taunted by pleas to Beat somebody, the Raiders took out their frustrations on the West End Lions, winning 36-16. It was quarterback Junior Langston, riddling Lion’s defense with stunning passes, driving home three TD passes to Colbert, O’Rear, and Choat. George Tate rambled in from 43 yards Out to present our fourth TD. Teny Box showed his natural self as he crashed through to score after a 43 yard march. David Heer wrapped the game up with three perfect points after and tied the bow with an exceptional field goal. I HIS Ul 58 COLD START FREEZES OUT RAIDERS It was too late. When the defense had warmed, the damage had already been done by the Brownies, as they had scored all their touchdowns in the first half. The Raider defense held the Brownies as our offense took control piling up the first downs. Tlie Raider score resulted from the roadblock set by the defense, keeping Jones Valley contained on the 10 yard line. When their punt netted only 28 yards, Phillips was ready to go to work. Langston heaved two yardage-gainers to Colbert and O'Rcar to put the oval on the five. George Tate walked goalward for our touchdown. Langston tried and failed with a two-point conversion. Final score 21-6. 59 DAMN STRAIGHT, WE MADE IT TO STATE. Do it to 'em! ... two points ... damn good team! ... Stuff it, Awad! ... one and one ... Whosh! ... Set up ... twobitsfourbitssix-bits ... V ... 1 ... C ... T ... O ... R ... Y He sa’ you! ... We got a rope, we got a tree ... watermelon, watermelon ... Na-na-naa good-bye ... Emotions are drawn taut by the strain of a grueling game. As desire for victory intensifies, the atmosphere Is heavy with the belligerent attitude of spectators and the unremitting efforts of the team. VARSITY SEASON Phillips 71' 43 Mt.
