rw.Sv.i. Ir-.JM WteJi !. r MIRROR PHILLIPS HIGH SCHOOL BIRMINGHAM. ALABAMA VOLUME 57 EDITOR . . . MARGARET McKENZIE BUSINESS MANAGER . . . MONA JACOBS Architect reveals plans to students. Some classes were held in the auditorium. Workman beams as he lays the last tile. Forbidden places offer temptation. Workmen with ladders were a familiar sight for many weeks. THE MIRROR REFLECTS THE CHANGES THAT MARK PROGRESS Throughout the 1966-1967 school year, Phillipians were faced with the problems of reconstruction. Mass confusion on the first day of school, lost session rooms, one-way paths to and from the lunchroom, newly encased stairways, workmen and tools in the halls, air filled with dust, sudden outbursts from shrill-voiced drills—these were only a few of the things we learned to live with this term. Sentimental students missed the little things like the grooves in the stairs in front hall that evidenced the presence of numerous other students before us and linked our lives with those who preceded us. Yes, times have changed, and so has John Herbert Phillips High School. The 1967 Mirror records this history making year. 3 SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE - LIKE THE P.H.8. MUSIC MAKERS 5 DEDICATION The annual staff dedicates the 1967 annual to a man who devoted thirty-nine years of service to Phillips and its students. Coach A. L. Dawson. Mr. Dawson coached football, basketball and baseball during much of his time here at Phillips. He led the Red Raiders to the city and county championships in football. Several times under his coaching, the baseball team brought home trophies signifying championships. In the classroom he coached the students in algebra, geometry and trigonometry — any and every kind of math that was offered at Phillips. We lost a truly great teacher and fine man when Coach Dawson retired in the spring of 1964. Students who had him will forever remember the phrases “Mamma, mamma, mamma. Coach is flunkin’me” and “back in 1492, when I was a young squirt” and “memory, oh, memory.” A member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Coach Dawson graduated from Howard College. He taught and coached at Tuscaloosa High School for two years and gave the school its mascot name, “Black Bears.” before coming to P. H. S. Coach and Mrs. Coach (as he calls her) reside in Homewood. Both are members of the Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, which was named in honor of his father, the first preacher for the congregation. Pliillips is proud to have had Coach Dawson on its faculty for the thirty-nine years he was here; and as a small token of our admiration, the yearbook staff dedicates this book to him. Mrs. Dawson plays the piano while Coach listens with interest. Coach enters his old room on second floor, 204. On occasional visits back to Phillips, Coach talks to former students. Homecoming 1966 was a festive time when the students participated in many ways. Besides the usual suspense created by the choice of the queen and representatives, the individual session rooms were running neck and neck in a contest for room decorations. When at last the judges chose session room 133, the president of the class accepted the prize during assembly. In preparation for the game, pep rallies were held almost every day. Cars decorated with red and white led the way to Fair Park Field for a spirited game against the Ensley Yellow Jackets. After the sweat and heat of the game, the students and their dates laid aside their mums, sold to them by G.L.C., and relaxed in the merriment that always accompanies a sock hop at P.H.S, gym. 73 GO RAIDERS! MISS D.A.R. COOKIE NOTO Dear Phillipians. I can’t begin to tell you what an honor it was for me to have represented our school as the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Girl for 1966-67. The first meeting I attended was at the Court House in December. This meeting was only a prelude to the excitement of the state-wide contest that was held in Montgomery. I was very excited and really glad to see all the “D.A.R. Girls” again. Thank you all for this wonderful opportunity. Sincerely yours. Lee 55 Phillips 14 Jones Valley 6 Phillips 0 Banks 33 Phillips 0 Ensley 19 Coach Cook gives Richard Bradley last minute instructions. RAIDERS UPSET BROWNIES The 14 to 6 victory over the Jones Valley Brownies was one of the season's big upsets. Jones Valley made the first score of the night as the result of a Phillips fumble. However, their PAT attempt failed. The Raiders really came to life as guard Nicky Noto blocked a punt and Richard Thompson recovered it on the JV one-yard line. Bobby Marques then went over for a score. Hal Breashears kick was good, and Phillips led through half-time with a score of 7 to 6. Phillips next score came as a result of a fumble on the Valley 30-yard line. Marques again ran the ball in. Breashears extra point try was good. The Brownies were halted by a pass interception by Larry Byrd and from then on were not able to score again due to Phillips’ strong defense led by Scott Price, Billy Noles, Nicky Noto, and Mike Dennis. 148 Bobby Marques leads Raiders on to victory. ANDY GRAY CHARLES RA1A RICHARD THOMPSON MIKE HUTTO Quarterback Tackle Center Tackle PURPLE TIGERS ROAR Tough defensive play aided Bessemer in easing by Phillips with a score of 21 to 0. Bessemer's first score was made in the second quarter of play after a 71 yard drive. A bad snap to Richard Bradley fave the Tigers possession of the all on the one yard line of the big Red. Quarterback Eddy Roberts was able to move the ball over the Phillips goal line from the short distance. Beginning at their 34 the Raiders moved to the 17-yard line in Purple Tiger territory only to be unable to go any further because of the tough Bessemer line. The Tigers' third TD followed a long, steady drive. When Phillips took over on their own 47, they caine alive, and Larry Byrd made it to the three; but the team was unable to break through from there. BOBBY MARQUES Quarterback RAMS RIP RAIDERS Red Raiders' first game of the season turned out to be a tough one. A crushing ground game, along with four interceptions, led the Rams to a 19 to 0 defeat over Phillips. Raiders demonstrated some strong defensive power, but were never able to get the offense going. Bobby Marques and Andy Gray alternated at quarterback, and Richard Bradley did most of the running. Rarnsay took the opening kickoff and drove a long 73 yards for their first score. The Red Raiders began a serious threat late in the first quarter, but Ramsay took over on downs at the 22. Ramsay's second big threat was halted as Bradley intercepted Wehby's pass on the Raiders' 8. Then on second down. Marques made a gallop of 58 yards before he was brougnt down by Vacaralla. Phillips moved to the 15, only to have a pass intercepted, which eventually led to the Ram's second score. Lee coasted to a 55 to 0 victory over Phillips by scoring the first eight times it gained possession of the ball. The Generals’ first score came after an 86 yard drive with Traylor at quarterback. Their second score was the result of a Phillips fumble on the Lee 45. Phillips was unable to break through the Lee defense in the next three plays. Lee then took possession of the ball, driving 56 yards for their third TD of the night. After receiving the ball in the third quarter, the Generals made a 94 yard drive for another touchdown, making it 28 to 0. A 33 yard run made another touchdown in tlie third quarter, making it 35 to 0. Lee’s Carmack later went in from the 30, and Caldwell hit a 35 yard scoring pass. King added the final score on a long punt return. Richard Bradley ran in for the second PAT. Early in the tliird quarter. Marques scored again on an eight yard sprint after a long drive. Andy Gray then ran tlirough the West End line for the extra point. The Lions made their only score of the game in the fourth quarter on a short pass play. Mike Dennis' interception and run to the West End two yard line set the Raiders in scoring position. Gray then went over the goal line for tne final TD. Bobby Marques ran for the extra point. LANIER CRUSHES PHILLIPS The Lanier Poets defeated the Phillips team in Montgomery by a score of 35 to 0. The Red Raiders' defense held the Poets well on the ground, but were unable to halt their passing attack. All three of the Lanier touchdowns in the first half were the result of their long passing skill. The lialftime score was 21 to 0. The Raiders did make one serious threat in the first quarter, as they drove to the Lanier 14. This drive included a 40 yard Marques to Byrd pass. However, the Raiders lost the ball on downs and were unable to score. The Poets scored one touchdown in each of the remaining quarters. The final score was 35 to 0. Woodlawn's first score of the evening came after a 72 yard drive early in the first quarter. However, Wright’s extra point try failed. The Colonel's second score followed an 80 yard drive, including a 40 yard pass from Henderson. Again the PAT attempt failed. Early in the second period the Raiders came back into the fame with a 66 yard drive, including a 49 yard pass by Bobby larques to Larry Byrd, putting the ball on the six. Richard Bradley went over for the score and Hal Bearshears' kick was good. Halftime score was Woodiawn 12, Phillips 7. The Raiders were unable to move the ball after receiving the second half kick off and the Colonels took over on their own 47. The Colonels drove 53 yards for a TD, and Wright's PAT was good. In the fourth quarter both teams exchanged the ball before Woodiawn made their final score which followed a 72 yard drive. Sproull added the PAT. Waiting on the sidelines is also a part of the game. Banks' second touchdown came late in the second quarter. Stallings' pass to Gray in the third quarter resulted in another TD for the Jets. Soon afterwards, the Jets made a 76 yard drive for still another score, making it 27 to 0. The Banks eleven made their final score on another 76 yard effort. However, the kick was no good. SEASON ENDS WITH ENSLEY VICTORY The Ensley Yellow Jackets stung Phillips Red Raiders. 19 to 0. in a disappointing climax of Homecoming activities. The Yellow Jackets scored all of their points in the first lialf. Quarterback Don Dickerson sprinted 30 yards for the first; halfback Mike Kim broil went 29 yards for the second; and the third TD was scored on a four yard plunge by fullback Andy Cross. Dickerson hit one of three extra point tries. The Raiders threatened several times in the game, but each time mistakes plus a tough Ensley front wall stopped them. The second half sec-sawed back and forth as neither team could sustain a drive. The deepest the Jackets could get was the Phillips 23-yard line late in the third quarter, and the best Red Raider advance was to Ensley's 28. This year the Phillips High School Junior Classical League was proud to be the host for the State Junior Classical League Convention. Alabama has had a state convention for ten years. During tills time Phillips has hosted four conventions. This year Jim Lastinger was the state president; Lynda McCracken, the state corresponding secretary; and Mary Eads, the state parliamentarian. One of the highlights of any Junior Classical League convention, whether state or national, is the Roman banquet. At the banquet all the delegates to the convention dress in traditional Roman costumes and gather for a typical Roman banquet. For the banquet Phillips was dortunate to obtain tlie Exliibition Hall of the Birmingham City Auditorium. The auditorium of Phillips served as the scene of the business meeting. Convention days were April 21 and 22. PHILLIPS' J.C.L. CHAPTER HOSTS STATE CONVENTION 176 Jimmy Lastinger and Johnny Stough don the typical Roman costumes.
