GOOD CITIZENSHIP GIRL AMANDA McCURRY Dear Phillipians, Representing Phillips as the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Girl is really a busy and exciting job. In November 1 attended my first meeting at the Court House, where 1 received my D.A.R. pin and hand book. 1 met and got acquainted with the other D.A.R. girls from all the high schools in Jefferson County. In January I was invited to be a guest at a regular meeting and tea at the Museum of Art. Then, in February I went to Montgomery (the Capitol and then to Huntingdon College) and there met with all the D.A.R. girls from all the high schools In Alabama. That day the winner and first alternate for the state were chosen. The winner was Cheryl Reid from Woodlawn and the first alternate was Cheryl Alexander from Auburn High. I had a wonderful time, and I have thoroughly enjoyed representing my school as the D.A.R. Good Citizen Girl for 1965 and 1966. Sincerely yours. Amanda McCurry 77 SENIOR MARSHALL LEWIS AMANDA McCURRY BUBBA ALLEN 78 FAVORITES ALICE GAMBLE BOB MILLICAN ANNE ZBINDEN 79 VERY PROUDLY WE WELCOMED ANNE LAQUIST TO PHILLIPS FROM STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN I will always remember Phillips High School’s enthusiasm and warm friendliness and kindness. This opportunity I have had to spend a year in the U. S., to live with an American family and to attend an American high school has been, I realize now, a great privilege, probably the. greatest I'll ever get. I have had the opportunity to get to know another people different from what I have been used to in customs and habits. I have learned that to get to know these people I must try to be understanding and be aware of the fact that a thing an American would do one way is not odd or wrong just because I have been accustomed to do it another way. I have experienced that under the surface people are really not different from people “over there. I feel myself that I have succeeded. Of course, the first time was almost impossible trying to interpret the Southern accent ana answering millions of questions every day. However, I learned soon not to be upset over somebody who tried to change the whole geography of Europe by calling Sweden, Switzerland and Oslo the capitol of Sweden. Never have I been asked the same question over and over again. I love to answer all questions. They show people’s interest in you and you all at Phillips have really seemed interested in and willing to listen to what I have had to relate. Now I feel that I am one of you, and 1 will hate to leave in June because I'm going to miss y'all immensely. This year has passed so quickly and I soon will have to leave. When I am back in Sweden again I will always remember this year in America. I will alwavs remember my wonderful American friends, my American school and family and how I used to sit at the football games waving my red and white shaker and screaming at the top of my lungs GOOOOO RRRAIDERS! St. Lucia, the symbol of Christmas for the Swedish people, is portrayed by Anne. The General Organization is the main organization of the school because it is the promoter of school activities. All clubs—whether honorary, service, special interest or literary--mean much to us since they help us to develop our character and teach us a sense of belonging, as well as responsibility. Club members will recall the day they got their invitations, the democratic procedures of the club meetings, learning new things and enjoying it and, of course, club socials. I believe in the democratic philosophies of private enterprise and competition, and in the freedoms of this nation—that these philosophies allow for the fullest development of my individual abilities. I believe that by doing my best to live according to these high principles, I will be of greater service both to myself and to mankind. 98 FIRST ROW: Sandra Harris, Syble Manous, Sue Spann, Sandra Franklin, Cary Biddle, Mr. William Pass (sponsor); SECOND ROW; Peggy Luster, Richard Hints, Sandra Johnson, Claudette Baggett, Rick Bates, Rickey Melton; THIRD ROW: Del.ois Mason, Iris Adams, Joanne Cross, Charlene Sweeten, Charlene Harrison V.I.E. CLUB COMPETES ON DISTRICT. STATE LEVELS Members of the Industrial Cooperative Training Class are members of the Vocational Industrial Education Club of Alabama, a statewide club in which the Phillips club has been very active over the years, having finished third in competition with 77 other clubs for the school years from 1962-1965. Some of the advantages of the I.C.T. Program are enrichment of the high school program, keeping the school abreast of the changes in business and industry, affording a means of close cooperation between the school and community, offering students an opportunity to receive practical and theoretical training for an occupation while in school raising the occupational level of the community, offering business and industry an opportunity to secure and train future employees. The Vocation Industrial Education Club affords ICT students an opportunity to develop their latent talents, to develop their personality traits, to compete with fellow students on the local level, and with other clubs on a district and state level. There are also moments of bitter defeat when the athlete tries to be a good sport about losing and promises himself to try to do better the next time. ATHLETICS FOOTBALL 1965 Bobby Whitley Bobby Brasher Junior Busbin Johnny Johnson RAMS RIP RAIDERS The Phillips Red Raiders and the Ramsay Rams met at Legion Field, both with expectations of victory. It was a long, hard battle and the Raider defense weakened only once, allowing the Rams to swing in for a touchdown. The battle continued at a stalemate after the score by Ramsay. Jeff Gilmer Mike Worthington LIONS UPSET RAIDERS The Raiders were fighting hard on September 16. but the Lions of West End were roaring with energy and persistance. In the final five minutes of the game, the Lions broke out of their cage to go for two touchdowns and two extra points winning the game. While the Raiders, after scoring nine points in the first half, were unable to take the pigskin across the goal again. Joey Robbins 151 OUR RAIDERS MAY THEY EVER WIN, BUT WIN OR LOSE, OUR RAIDERS Coaches lames Chandler, Homer Wesley, and Dale Cook 153 Richard Hutto Larry Byrd Richard Thompson William Dial Richard Bradley Scott Price JUNIOR AND SOPHOMORE PLAYERS Mike Dennis POETS TAKE RAIDERS The Phillips High Red Raiders traveled to the Crampton Bowl in Montgomery Friday, September 24 to meet Lanier. The Raiders surged onto the field with true school spirit and great desire for a victory. Then, in tlie first quarter, the Poets gained two touchdowns over the big Red. The Raiders put up a fight, and from the second quarter on, it was a maddening game of give and take. After marching from their own 23 to Lanier's 26 yard line, the Raiders were stopped by the Poet's. Thus the Raiders fell to Lanier. Niki Noto Bobby Marques WOODLAWN VICTORIOUS With the bone-crushing running of Larry Helms, the Woodlawn Colonels defeated Phillips High's scrappy Raider team, 28-7. One of the biggest and best backs in the city, Helms, scored his seventh, eighth, and ninth TD's of the year to account for three-fourths of the Colonels' score. The Raider offense couldn't get moving against a heavier, more experienced Woodlawn squad. Not to be shut out, however, the Raiders managed a lone tally in the third quarter. Joe Ellis passed to end Ronnie Jug Chambers for 23 yards, and then followed up with an 18 yard touchdown pass to halfback Bubba Allen. Lynn Dahlkc TIGERS EASE BY CRIMSONS In an exciting game, with the score changing hands several times, Phillips Higl School lost a chance for glory. Within 12 plays after the opening kickoff the Raiders had battled 85 yards for a touchdown. Shortly afterwards, the Tigers recovered their senses and went 60 yards to even up the game. The second quarter ended with the score seven-all. The Raiders came back after the half ended with more hard play which set the Crimsons up 7 yards from pay dirt. Unable to move the ball, the Raiders had to call on Mike Clark to boot a field goal. Bessemer roared back with two back-to-back TD's. Undaunted by this ten-point lead, the Raiders came back with an Ellis-to-Allcn touchdown pass. This wasn't enough, however, and the game ended 20-17. Girls in the Pep Club get into the act with their first powder puff game. GENERALS JAIL INDIANS The Phillips Red Raiders met the Lee Generals Thursday, October 21, in Montgomery with a strong desire to win. The Raiders scored first as a fake handoff to Gary Borden from Joe Ellis led to an 87-yard touchdown. During the second quarter of the game, Bubba Allen racked up another touchdown for the Raiders and Mike Clark’s kick gave them another point. But the teamwork of Phillips seemed to fall apart. Lee soon took the lead again. After a fighting battle to the very end, the Raiders were taken by the Generals with a score of 33 to 14. Kerry Likis Jimmy Maddox 155 Wayne Terry Gerald Addison Dusty Neff Charles Ferlisi BULLDOGS WIN The Red Raiders journeyed to Anniston, inly to return with a crushing defeat. The ilulldogs were not to be denied a victory. The first period was scoreless, neither team able to muster a scoring drive. The complexion of the game changed in the second quarter, however, as the Bulldogs pushed hree TD’s across the Raider goal. Recovering their senses, Phillips put together a scoring drive capped by an Ellis to Allen pass. The Bulldogs came back again to dominate play in the second half scoring one in the third and another in the fourth, rhe game ended 33-7. 156 Alan Potts JETS ROUT RAIDERS The high-flying Jets from Banks overcame the Raiders for their eighth straight victory. The number one team in the state were really fired up as they bulled their way through a smaller, less experienced Phillips team. Banks seemed to be in complete command of the game until the opening minutes of the second quarter when Gary Borden ran a dazzling 70 yard sprint. Clark's extra point was missed, making the score 14-6. The spark was lost, however, and again Banks dominated play, scoring 26 more points and holding the Raiders behind the 50 yard line until the final buzzer sounded. Hal Breashears Roger Knox Vernon Pendergrass Fred La Pore JACKETS STING RAIDERS Kenny Trummel A damper was put on the festivities at the climax of Homecoming Week Saturday night, November 13, when Phillips engaged in a battle with the Yellow Jackets of Ensley. The first quarter passed with neither team scoring; while in the second period both the Jackets and the Raiders carried the pigskin across the goal line for TD’s. Before the half, Ensley scored again raising the score to 14-7. The third quarter was scoreless, but the fourth quarter proved to be a different story as the Jackets again scored. The final score was 21-7.
