Dedication is the key word to describe Miss Merrill's life, which has been devoted to the betterment of society through teaching and advising youth. In a small way, we hope that the dedication of this annual will show our appreciation. £U-JL 6 ENG Ll$ H c2f A. nj£nii 4S S L .Q GK Uj £0't ' 7 i- i e 1 MATHErtAT|CS sciENce Jh e +MX£r T Ok _ U yjyj n« v ?• fg tAjLS language ARTS CiroweiL WhaleQ commercial ' etfs r—7 7 —r L FALL 1956 JOE CALAMUSA Second Associate OLIVET SUMMERS President NELDA CHADWICK First Associate SPRING 1957 SANDRA PURVIS First Associate JOE CALAMUSA President CLAUDETTE FAULK Second Associate GENERAL ORGANIZATION PAGE 8 WHAT’S THAT SECRET YOU’RE KEEPING?” THE SENIORS,., January 1957 PAGE 9 JOHN MATTHEW REEDER President WILLIAM HARRIS COGGINS Vic© President DORIS SANDRA KINCAID Secretary CLASS OF JANUARY ’57 MARY JANE REID Artist JUDITH ELLEN LANCE Orator MOTTO Ad Maiora (Toward Higher Things) COLORS Emerald and White FLOWER Carnation MOTTO COMMITTEE Ronald Bailey, Judy Strong, Wanda Schoel. Take special note of all the red, green, blue, and brown lines when taking Miss Finley's English tests. Sue Cockrell leaves her lop-sided typing eraser to Wanda Bradford, who can find use for it also in her Type 4 class. Mary Jane Reid leaves her fashion designs to Betty Davis. Patricia Biggs leaves her Homemaking 8 notebook to Barbara Finchum. Juanita Rainey leaves her height to a cute little freshman, Shirley Chaney, to divide with her sister, Shelvia. Carolyn Isbell wills her place in the girls' gym to Howard Pridmore, who tries to get in there every day. (Who's in there, Howard?) Edna Van Sant leaves her history book to Hughlene Luckey. Christine Limbaugh would like to donate Betty McGhee a few of her pounds. Barbara Bailey wills some of her height to Martha Musgrove, who will need it for her basketball career. Rosa Lee Carbonie wills her cousin, Tony Ippolito, to the girls, if they can get him. Helen Logan wills her long eyelashes to Faye Hill. Curtis Bird leaves his Usher rat paddle to Mr. Irving E. Fullington, who has a fancy for collecting them. Carol Pugh wills her pin-up picture of Elvis Presley to Jo Ann Deas. Merrill Jones wills his jokes to Mr. 'B , who needs some. Mary Kildron wills her ability to memorize the memory passages in Miss Finley's English 8x class to anyone who can do it. Norma Williams leaves her ability to jump high when doing yells to Gloria Moore, who seems to have a little trouble getting off the ground. Johnnie Vermillion wills Olga Wilhite all her shorthand notes. Matt Reeder, being of sound mind and body (he says) does hereby bequeath one slightly-used Honor Society candle to Tommy Kelley, who was always in the dark. Bobby Dobbs wills his seat by the radiator in Miss Cobb's room to Charles Ho-burt Parks. Ronnie Bailey and Larry Tuck leave passports to God's Country, Inglenook, to any student wanting to go there. Roberta Rensaleer alias Judy Lance leaves her acting ability to the senior play aspirants. Joe Dickiana leaves with his compliments his front seat in Miss Moss's room, which he has occupied for many semesters, to the Mirror Board. Charles Stary leaves his ability to look as if he knows the answers to all the PAGE 22 questions to the May Seniors who will surely need them. Ronald Kidd leaves the knack of writing term papsrs to all Chemistry 6 students who will need it for their 5,000 word themes. Bob Meadors leaves his red hair to Gloria McClurkin, who has always wanted some. Richard McClendon and Gene Smith will gladly help coach anyone who wants to leave and just can't seem to make it. Betty Torre wills her unique method of doing shorthand homework to Alice Biddle in hopes that she can figure it out. Edwina Burdette wills her milk pitcher to Irene Haas and Pat Wheeler. Carolyn Berry wills her typewriter to Kay Jones. Angela Lawrence leaves her height to Lester Rivers, who really does not need it, and Dick Nail, who really does need some more. Charles Logsdon, with sorrow in his heart, takes razor in hand and leaves his side-burns to Douglas Bird-Dog Frost. Billy Voigt wants to leave his seat in the bass section of the choir to Jim Schmidt. Gertrude Chappell and Ramona Carpenter leave the girls of Phillips the ability to trap a husband. Jimmy Goggans bequeaths his football and basketball prowess to the athletic department. If anyone needs a slightly-used band instrument guaranteed to get you into football games free, see Dwight Waldrop and Margaret Johnson for details. James Arrowood and Bettie Lou Prewitt leave their quietness to Becky Burns, who isn't quiet at all. Wanda Schoel will gladly give her desk in mechanical drawing to any girl brave enough to sign up for the class. Vivian Parsons leaves the ability to win things to Claudette Faulk, who is doing quite well on her own. Joe Dobbs leaves everything mathematical to the math team for reference use. Carl Elvis Scott leaves his old pal, the guitar , to the band for use at the half-time shows next year. Derran Harris leaves. Period! Bruce Hose leaves his ability to tell jokes and keep people in stitches to Bobby Yarbrough. To all stage crews of the future, Pete Wood leaves his superhuman strength. This is to help them move the piano. Connie Sue Barnett, Penny Lawrence and Barbara Speer leave all the luck that wasn't with them when taking accuracys in Type 4 to all the new Type 4 students. Tasia Grammas is so glad just to leave that she is even going to leave the country. When these seniors come back for a visit to Phillips, they won't be surprised at what they find behind the Green Doors because they left it there. —Olivet Summers PAGE 23 Curtains Rise Outside Green Doors The curtain goes up for the first time in the New Year of 1970 on the Inky Gog-gan, Jr. Show sponsored by the Linda Hamrick-Joyce Lewis Mud-Pack Corporation including an actual demonstration by Bertha Taylor. Tonight you will see a parade of Big Wheels who got their start behind the green doors of dear old Phillips High School. First, we shall hear from the Middle-agers , composed of Tyler Glenn, Billy Cross, Phil Boissel, and Jerome Lane, who will sing Too Old To Cut The Mustard. We should like to send our best wishes to Judy Sawyer and Nolan Nakos, who are abroad competing for the Ping-Pong Championship in the Olympics. Girls, hold on to your seats, for that teen-age rage, Ray Davis, is going to sing Too Much , written by the famous composer, Ruth Brown. Sylvia Brown and her Slew Foot Five including Fay Thompson, Carolyn Marie Jones, Mary Ann Burton, Judy Strong, and Corrine Zylman will do their rendition of Rock Around Mother Goose. Ralph Neely will demonstrate the new Neely Tot Rod which seats twelve people, especially designed for the Misses Sherry McCurry, Mary Sue Ray, and Jane Donaldson Girls' School. And now to introduce that sensational singing duet which recently toured Africa: Olivet Summers and Jimmy Nail, who will sing Throw Mama From the Train. Tonight we are honored to have in our audience some celebrities, whom I wish to introduce at this time. Let's have the spotlight on Jimmy Cartledge, newly-elected garbage collector of Inglenook, Alabama. His able assistants, who run the Greasy Spoon on the side, are O. T. Alford, Larry Bryant, and Bruce Nelson. Up in the balcony I see my old friend, Charles Waide, who is running an old folks' home especially for dilapidated football players. Sandra Kincaid seems to be making a big success as head nurse. Her assistant nurses, noted for their cheerful bedside manners, are Carolyn Shealy, Juanita Richards, and Mary Poarch. PAGE 24 We are happy to have with us the two academy award winners, Virginia Alexander and Brady Wolfe, who are leaving by jet to go on location for their newest movie, Kat People of the Moon , co-starring Gwen Faulk, Howard Tutwiler, and David Marsh. Now to get on with the show. You will see the wonder of the world as the famous magician Hudonit , Wayne Mauk, will turn his partner, Jo Ann Wilbanks, into stone! Anita Johnson, the little girl who has determined to put Kate Smith in the shade, will sing When the Moon Shines on Central City . Penny Jebeles and Howard Whitley are hare to give you a preview of their new dayt'.me television serial Search for Yesterday , written by Terrell Duchock with organ music supplied by Ronald Travis. To conclude tonight's parade of stars, I present to you the Marsette Quintuplets , who are just back from a two-weeks' vacation. On our most modern space station, they will demonstrate strange dances taught them by Robert Grady Sides and Jerry Swafford, the scientists who hated bop and decided to remain on Mars. Members of the group are Jimmy West, Faye Pate, Mary Jo Salter, Jimmy Cullen, and Barbara Smith. We are sorry that Jalon Payne and Mary Poarch, the comedy team, who always keeps us in stitches, couldn't get baby sitters and were unable to be here tonight. Thanks to Eugene Burford and his fine band for furnishing the music for the show, and especially to our director, Donald Chambliss, who scouted the corners of the world to get all our friends together tonight. Just before signing off, I want to read a telegram from Principal Alan Holmes of Phillips High saying, I now pronounce you 'Big Wheels', the ancestors of the green doors of whom we are very proud. P. S. Your darling descendants, of whom I am taking very good care, are also very proud of you. —Ann Varnon page 25 WHO’S WHO . . . Fletcher Anderson's ability to get along with all the girls in the Speech Major Class is left to William Prosch. The sweet personality and shorthand ability of Gail Bass is willed to Patsy Armstrong. Peggy Brown leaves her poise and position as editor of the Mirror to any capable applicant. Maurice Belrose wills his long vocabulary and ability to use it to Kay Turner. Ann Varnon's ability to detect food a mile away, eat like a horse, and still keep her figure is willed to Sondra Brown. Tony Ippolito, Ken Peeler, and Harry Walker leave their positions on the varsity to Jim Baty, Kent Robertson, and Bobby Hughes. Laura Nygren wills her pretty complexion that attracts handsome football players to any girl specializing in football. Roger Boone's casual walk and manners are willed to Lanny Vines. The mustache and sailor suit of Sam Bonduris are given to Kat Paffos. The outstanding lungs and co-head position on the cheerleading squad are left by Gayle Dyar to Sue Guthrie. Joe Calamusa leaves his popularity and president's gavel to anyone who can fill the bill. Charlotte Thach and Carolyn Thornton leave their pretty black hair to two good-looking blondes, Brenda Wright and Joe Simms. Ability at sports is left by Alice Huck-aby and Carol Huddleston to Ann Me-Math and Kay Hairston. Ben Catchings wills his pretty teeth and girl-catching smile to Jerry Shurbet. Albert Chieves leaves his place on the dance committee to any cool cat who wants it. The quiet disposition of Renae Creel is willed to Beth Gregg, who really needs it. Rose Marie Ellis, Evelyn Estell, Arvon-elle Foshee, Fay Franklin, Margaret Geet-ers, Shelby Davis, and Betty Doss leave big vacancies which will be hard to fill. The wit of Deanie Henderson and Sandra Stacy is left to Becky Burns, who really doesn't need it. Jimmy Davis wills his tennis ability to Judy Davis, who would really appreciate it. The amorous qualities of Leland Downs are willed to Zona Gayle Thorpe. Mitchell Hardin wills his argumentative ability to all frightened Freshmen. A Southern drawl, belonging to Sue PAGE 54 Davis, is given to Bobby Bazemore. Carmen Holland's ability to get boy friends is willed to Judy McCord. Suzanne Huffaker wills her ability to do everything well to Claudette Faulk. Karen McCombs and Martha Rikard give their red hair to Rebecca Smith, who already has plenty of it. Barbara Jordon's ability to catch a cute basketball player is willed to Fay Gregory. Two vacancies in the Honor Society, once occupied by Sheila Huddleston and Jo Ann Myers, are left to John Jeter and Gene Kelly. Martha Kirkwood leaves her position on the cheerleading squad to some future members with good lungs. Ann Butler, Judy Glasscock, Jack Red-fern, Billie Sue Connally, Mary Ella Gamble, Kay Grimes, Mary Louzis, and Patsy Nabors will their places in the choir to any song birds left at P. H. S. Dick Nail leaves his stature to Lester Rivers. Mary Jane Chandler, Beverly Leonard, Jeanie Hampton, Mary McBee, and Julia Mansfield will their good taste in clothes to every P. H. S. girl seeking a P. H. S. boy. Judy Vaughn leaves her intelligence to Jack Sisson. A pony-tail, belonging to Susan Ray, goes to all who are tired of almost bald heads. Willie Russell wills his dignified, reserved nature to any boy from Inglenook. Walter Prescott wills his boat to all young lovers. Fred Moore's ability to win a cute majorette is willed to Richard Ray. Jimmy Osborn wills his love of convertibles and brunettes to brother, Johnny Osborn. Don Paxton, Perry Monroe, Stephen Lovoy, Gerald Watson, Robert Black, and James Honeycutt leave their brains to the science department for careful study. Dale Sox, Sara Perry, Carlynn Stephens, Gail Walker, Mary Ellen Williams, Betty Taylor, Betty Lou Stephens. Julia Price, Fay Hill, Judy Holt, Betty King, Pat Le-Foy, Ira Sue Littleton, Jane Lumpkin, Mary Martin, Jane Melvin, Barbara Moore. Pat DeRoncy, Patsy Davis, Barbara Collins, Louise Bullard, Wanda Bradford, Ann Adams, and Carol Robertson leave behind four years of wonderful memories. As the seniors will these qifts to the undergraduates, they leave behind the g'een doors of Phillips four years of happiness and of cherished memories. —Claire Prescott page 55 Seen Behind the Green Door Since I have been endowed with a special gift of foreseeing the future through my Green Door, I, upon opening that door last night, saw what the 1957 graduates of Phillips High School will be doing in the year of 1977. In November, the nation is electing the people to serve for the next four years. On the ticket for President is Dennis Catalano. The first lady ever to run for Vice President, Nelda Chadwick, is his running mate. Campaigning for them are Jack Criswell, Billy Tidwell, Mary Ann Johnson, and Marcia Turner. Mary Elizabeth Self is entertaining at the convention by playing appropriate songs on the organ. The Red Raider drummer, Janice Wright, is beating away on the drums for Tommy Autry, who has taken Paul Whiteman's place as leading jazz band director. Through my Green Door I see a new show opening on Broadway. Starring in this thriller, written by Frances Cunningham, is Miss Claire Prescott. Also playing with her in this drama are some of her high school classmates, Janice Hamil- ton, Lynn McKoy and Carolyn McCarley. The scenery has been magnificently done by Mary Sue Ingle and Judy Walker. Pat Williams is now married and uses her singing talent to lull her two sets of twins to sleep. Charm Magazine has a new fashion director, Pat Each. Pat designs clothes and writes facts about them for the magazine. Rebecca Gilmer is now head of the Commercial Department at Phillips and teaches shorthand. Representing the secretarial field are Evelyn Lillich, Judy Meadors, Pat Nevin and Barbara Tyler. Opening in Madame Butterfly in 1977 at the Metropolitan Opera House is Miss Theresa Rinaldi, singing the leading role. Harold Ridgeway has just recently been promoted to the position of top designer at the Ford Corporation. Gary Reid, capitalizing on his study of typing while in high school, has just won the contest as fastest typist in the United States. PAGE 56 Mary Ann McKeever is now happily married to a doctor and assists him in his work by acting as his receptionist. Sally Turner, head of the Law and Order Committee in 1957, liked her job so well that she is now Chief-of-Police in Birmingham. Wayne Hardin is seen advertising Charles Antell's hair tonic. Wayne's red hair really shows up on the thirty-inch color T.V. sets. The Birmingham News has in its employment one of the country's most brilliant and talented cartoonists, Mr. David Parrish. The Kentucky Derby this year was won by jockey Jimmy Carlton. Phyllis Traywick is now Dean of Women at an all girls' school in Virginia. Dzmpsey Owen, once a track star, is now the top coach for the boys entering the Olympic contest. Uhland Couch, Jim Currier, and Judson Davidson, three fa- mous athletes, are assisting him in his work. Frances Bishop, now a grandmother, spends her spare time playing with her two grandchildren. Auburn has added a new course to the list of subjects taught there. It is a course in how to play Tiddly Winks and its coach is Eric Townsend. Suzanne Huffaker has her time well filled by keeping up with the activities and responsibilities which are hers now that she has become Woman of the Year. Jane Duffey has recently married a Canadian Mountie. It is said of Jane, She always catches her man. The time has come for me to close my magic Green Door. I only hope that the desires and ambitions of all the senior class will be fulfilled. —Peggy Brown PAGb 57 WHO’S WHO . . . But soon, bursting with a desire to heap her garlands Of roses and daffodils on the hungry hillsides, She runs out of the forest, laughing, Knowing suddenly that her laughter will Frighten the witch away. She stops for a moment, planning, And every breath is held for fear that She will flit back into the forest, Bue then she comes to the horizon and Tells the sun to shine more brightly; Her shyness has disappeared; She is a mature, gracious woman. And thenl She is gone and in her place Is a small yellow-haired boy, Who is Summer. —Frances Cunningham PAGE 6) Organizations PAGE 63 ALL I WANT TO DO IS JOIN THE HAPPY CROWD” HONORARY SOCIETIES DISC AND DIAMOND NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY 1st row, left to right: Cadet John Seller , Joe Scott, Jamn Stelncamp. Since Bunyan Davie, a former Phillipian, wrote the music to GREEN DOOR, we feel that this theme is especially appropriate. Doors symbolize beginnings and endings to experiences we have at Phillips, and since six of the seven doors that permit you to enter Phillips are green, we derive the theme GREEN DOOR. El.
