Midden Splendor Small and deserted Almost covered by sand But for one speck of rainbow pearl Left to sparkle in the sun. I stooped to pick it up, Brushed it clean of sand. Only a sea shell, I thought, As I placed it to my ear. Only a sea shell small and lonely . . . Yet . . . It echoed the roar of the deep dark ocean, It reflected the rays of the lofty, brilliant sun. In so small a thing I found a hidden splendor. —Betty Joyce McClellan MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Ruby Tollett, Charles Davis MOST STUDIOUS Betty Turner, Charles Weidman January WHO'S WHO BEST LOOKING Mary Kay Leslie, Charles Agee MOST ATHLETIC June Burns, Gerald Tuck WITTIEST Martha Allred, Tommy Smith JoWfeerfrv HOW TO USE You've heard the old saying, Where there's a will, there's a way. Well, here is the will; which way does it stray? This is the Last Will and Testament of the January, 1954, Senior Class. You who are left will witness this document. Sign at the bottom, if you so please. Gerald Toothpick Tuck wills all his old toothpicks back to the lunchroom. Floyce Fleming wishes to will her majorette boots to anyone who has fee; big enough to fill them. Bobby Hughes wills to Billy Lemons the warm spots he now holds in the hearts of Miss Lewis and Miss Alexander. Barbara Arrington wills and bequeaths all her worldly goods: her battered baton and her Indian blanket, to Martha Batman. Bobby Joe Moran says he would like to will to all his teachers his old homework papers he forgot to turn in (a likely story). Sue Helms wills her great love for Hamlet to Martha Davis. Coy Dunlap wills his fast-talking voice to Joe Clayton. Maybe he can use it; Coy can't do anything with it. Martha Allred and June Burns will to Frances Jones and Jane Gilliam their ability to outtalk everybody in their Homemaking 8 class. Lewis Doss wills his size to the Salmon twins. They could use it. Eddy Caldwell wills all her A's to Diane Danforth, hoping Diane can graduate with their help. Bart Morrow wills ail his dud rounds of ammunition to anyone who has a truck big enough io cart them off. Lena Hutto and Janice Wissinger leave their photography ability to Ray Coffee and Gene Crowe. Take advantage, boys. Billy Reid wills and bequeaths all his troubles to Sid Nethery. Unfortunately, Sid doesn't need them; he has plenty of his own. Joy Holdaway wills her blonde hair to anyone (male or female) who is tired of buying peroxide. John Burchfield wills his three study halls to Larry Courington, who really needs them. LEFT OVERS Constance Johnson wills to Miss Dryer her first soprano chair on the first row. Charles Prickett (Changie boy) wills his ability to make change in the lunchroom to Emmitt Mead. Bernice Bandy wills her locker, No. 2440, to anyone who thinks he can open it without being late to class. If Ross Melvin gets his bookkeeping set past Miss Cobb, he wills it to Ronnie Payne. Shirley Brook wills her A's in shorthand to her sister Wally. Keep up the good record, Wally. Royce Bird” Murray wills to Paul Tyson his ability to talk with his ears. Jo Anne Thompson wills Miss Holmes and her pop tests to Bobbie Martin. Mervyn Bridges would like to will his musical ability to George Bennett, who's doing all right for himself. Willis Baker and Bill Grayson will their fun and good times in Mr. Hinz' room to all the new D. E. students. Barbara Bulman wills her red hair to Frances Smith, who really doesn't need it. Billy Pearson wills his well-worn dictionary to his brother Gene. Carolyn Pendergast wills her versatility to anyone capable of taking it. Sue Helms wills her infinite patience to Sue Lantrip, her successor as president in the Dramatics Club. Eugene Webb wills his artistic ability to Martha Lanham. George Betros leaves his place in the National Honor Society to Leona Eddy. Denise Dagnan and Mary K. Leslie will to future Mirror typists the illegible writing of the Mirror Board. Marvin Pinion wills his locker by 123 to anyone stopping by on his way to half-study. And last, but by no means unimportant. Tommy Smith wills his wit to David Bowers. Signed, sealed, and delivered under our hands, this 21st day of January, 1954. CAMERA CAVALCADE Once, this news station boasted of being able to present today's news today. But with the improvements made in the field of science by Jack Tate and Felix Bearden, we are able to bring to the TV screen Tomorrow's News Today. Our reporters, Anita Thompson and Amma Hurt, are standing by on Jupiter to bring us special bulletins. Flash! In the Punch Bowl on New Year's Day, Dan Kilgore made an off-bench tackle for the University of There. This hasn't been done since 1953. Tommy Britt was making a touchdown for Here College when the error occurred. Cheering the teams on were Regina Smith and Betty Blevins. And here's an unusual thing—Billy Mills, expert manager, manages both teams! Dan Russell, manufacturer of little red hot-rods, is trying to use cars as a trade name for them. Two other manufacturers, Bobby San-defur and Joe Plosser, make scissors to enable others to cut up as they did. Other successes in the business field are Mary Stern, Betty Stribling, and Wynelle Kennedy. It seems that Congressmen Charles Agee, Charles Davis, and Charles Weidman are trying to pass a law that all boys be named Charles; all girls be named Charleen. Opposing the idea are Martha Jo Allred and Jo Ann McCay. Can't imagine why! Ruby Tollett's recent address to Congress began, Y'all, listen—. They say it's a habit she picked up in high school. Speaking of politics, Virginia Sparks has been named secretary to the Supreme Court. While flying on the airliner with Betty Joyce McClellan as stewardess, we found that Elsie Rodgers Smith's little boy, Gene, has grown up to be one of the Smith brothers. Bulletin!! Auburn Lee Slaten has been appointed president of the University of Alabama. Jack Chamblee finally was thrown out of a history class. His comment: It wasn't me. Phillips math teacher Betty Turner spends her spare time working out fourth dimensional problems. Susanne Acker teaches astronomy (?). Physicists Jimmy Wood, Bobby Rosser, and Clegg Richardson are still trying to figure out what's going on in Room 108. And have you heard that the 3 R's are being taught by Leonard Rowell, Ronnie Rogers and Don Rucks? Appearing in Eugene Webb's new TV show, The Four Lassies, are Ruth Perry, Charleen Shouse, Betty Burchfield, and Almeda Norman, while Geraldine Pitts is featured in the soap opera entitled Private Secretary. One of Shirley Baisden's fashion models, Donnie Palmore, has been offered a movie contract by Jo Ann Turner Movies. Kathleen Clemons has disinvented shorthand. Doris Pugh has completed her lecture tour, discussing How to Succeed in Home and Journalistic Careers. We were told by Policeman George Colvert that Lawrence Sewell had been arrested for stealing Vulcan's statue from Red Mountain. Chief of Police Johnny Foster released him after bond was arranged by Lawyer Freddy Rauschenberg. Henry Keplinger, manager of the newly enlarged Alabama Theater, which had on display the archaeological finds of John McAvoy (who was inspired by his Latin classes at Phillips) is urging all graduates of January 1954 to accept a free pass to see that epic of 9-D Screen (invented by Marion Files) The Two Horsemen starring Cecil Mitchell and Hunter Mitchell. (No kin.) Billy Williams is now representing the United States in the National Tennis Meets. Howard Ennis was the first person ever to fly to the moon alone. It was rumored that he charmed all the moon maidens with his pretty brown eyes. Floyd Powell's chain of hotels are really keeping him busy now, while------ Ladies and gentlemen, we regret that operational difficulties prevent our sending you the remainder of 'Tomorrow's News Today. Life is humming a tune to me. Crimson stained smoke making curls in the sky Tells me that steel is in the making. Steel for our stores, cars, and home And stoves to keep cakes baking. Churches, schools, and theaters To make wiser girls and boys, Cars whizzing quickly down the streets. Their horns making music from noise. Libraries, hospitals, parks, and the Press, Shops to keep us in style. Policemen and firemen guarding our peace. Highways beckoning mile after mile. Sitting down to their evening meal, I see a family of four. Their heads are bowed, the prayer is said. Love's here, nothing matters more. This is a city known to the nations But personally by only me. It sings me a tune, and the refrain rings out We're making Birmingham great! —Drucilla Traywick MOST STUDIOUS Shirley Keltner, Norman Suddulh MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Donald Brown, Shirley Keltner BEST LOOKING Paul Jackson, Beverly McCurry WITTIEST Philip Zaretki. This group of seniors is among the finest Phillips has ever produced, and ready, indeed, are they to step out into the world as alert young citizens. In conference room 332, I see that twenty-one of the seniors have assembled, so we'll now switch our microphone over there and listen to what is beinq left the lowerclassmen. This is Donald Brown again—in conference room 332. The person directly before our comera is the outqoinq oresident of the Phillips student body. As his last official dutv, Jimmy Brasher is presiding over the meeting, and he will read the will of the May araduates. Bubble gum to Lois Parker from Mary Jo Abbott. One haircut (to anyone that would dare wear it)—Paul Jackson. Effie Jones leaves her ability to mak friends at West End to Elizabeth Houston. My ability to open my biq mouth and out my foot in it—Gloria Jones to Bobbie Shirley (who doesn't need it). Frances Lovoy leaves her notes on 'Hamlet' to little brother Joe. My haircut to anyone who can wear it Jerre Randall. George Wakefield leaves the name of 'Flash' to Mo Robbins. Philip Zaretki bequeaths his last name to any cute, eligible maiden running around the halls. Still I wonder if he doesn't have someone particular in mind. Don Brown, your reporter, speaking again. That, with the exception of the president's bequest, concludes the reading of the May graduates' last will and testament. Many things — unusual, odd, and some unexpected, were left. And we feel sure the president will not make exception to this rule. I believe he is about to make his statement----- I, Jimmy Brasher, will my political successes to Charlene Purvis. So, the will is officially concluded. It will now be sealed and put away for posterity. The day?-—Not too different from any other you'll experience; a bit more pleasant, perhaps. A day filled with events,- some to be forgotten tomorrow, others to be remembered forever. An ordinary day out of the life of an ordinary people. But—you were there. SCANNING the SCOOPS 6 1 75 Paul Tyson loses in second attempt at Senate seat. Tyson, a man not easily discouraged, made this statement, I started at the bottom with the intent of working my way to the top, but others have made it in one jump; I shall run for president in ‘77.
