The Senior Classes of Phillips High School Present THE MIRROR £64 Birmingham, Alabama January, 1950 May, 1950 Alma Mater Oh, hail to thee, our Alina Mater. We sing our praise of thee, We cherish thy traditions. We love thy stately halls. The memories of the hours we spent there Will live within our souls. The symbol of devotion, The Crimson and the White. —Alfred E. Mayer We, the staff of the 1950 Mirror, dedicate this annual to a person who is closely connected with this book, and the people in it. As a sponsor of the Mirror, she has served the students with understanding, intelligence, and patience. From her smile, we have gained courage to go on despite obstacles; through her instructive guidance, we have gained knowledge; because of her patience, we have come to appreciate her as a friend as well as a teacher. With sincere gratitude for her willing service, we honor one who truly deserves the recognition, Miss Leslie Moss. THE FACULTY Principal COMMERCIAL Winifred Ragan Moore Alexander Mrs. Inez G. Great men are ours— Jefferson, Jackson, Lee, Lanier. Our fathers before us Loved this land. They were proud to be called Southerners. The ocean brought us The old cidtures The old traditions And made the old cities— Charleston, Richmoyid, New Orleans, Mobile. South Through Virginia, Carolina, To Alabama Through the forests Over the mountaiyis Down the rivers Strong men came. They built well With what they had. Cotton ruled them Cotton served them. The winds of war Struck them. But they were still Strong men. Now over land Once white with cotton Tall smoke stacks Puff out pillars Of Black smoke— Industry's flags. Old rivers are laden With heavy barges. Steel rails speed Racing freight cars Over old trails. Over old roads New life pulses On mighty highways. On old land New cities rise. New voices call us With the old challenge. We will answer— Keeping the best of the old. We will build the new. The South ivili give us What we need. We will grow here In wisdom, in strength. We will not leave our own. We will keep Deep in our hearts The South— The South our ancestors left For us. We will hold our heads high And say “The South is ours. ' —Nancy Bryant WE REMEMBER ====== Sh! Quiet! This is the big moment! This is Graduation! A hundred and seventeen hearts beat faster as the curtain opens, revealing the 1950 Seniors. Some are rather sad and dewey eyed as they stare out into an audience of beaming Mothers and Dads; others are smiling and anxious and from force of habit are already glancing at the clock and counting the minutes. The President welcomes the crowd and one by one the officers give their speeches. A hurried glance at the clock says we'll be alumni of Phillips High School in less than forty five minutes. Hut first we must listen to the speaker of the evening. Smiling and advancing toward the mike he addresses his audience: ‘Friends, this is both a joyous and sad occasion and the memories ...” Memories—My mind slowly wanders back over our high school career and some of the things we’ll remember. We couldn’t forget how thrilled Miss Lynch was when John Yauger answered a question in English class, and how we laughed when the October issue of Classic Comics was two weeks late and seventy-three seniors missed making their book reports in time. Nor could we forget how George Brooks glowed for weeks after getting his picture in “Tab.’’ And if we live to be a hundred we’ll remember and profit by Miss Benson’s lectures. Oh, we’d better get back to the speaker—what’s that he’s saying— ‘although it is a happy occasion many things are being left behind that ...” Yes, he is so right, I thought—Why, the Seniors are leaving enough chewing gum stuck under desks to keep the faculty chewing continually, for 7 years. Emogene Kinney is leaving Bill Morgan for the girls of the student body to fight over. Tommy Hughes is bequeathing his bashfulness to Jimmy Nunis, and Angie Brown is leaving her high IQ to Ann Brooks. Bill Ogle and Bill Cherry are leaving their ability to lapse into a coma in every class to anyone who wants it. The speaker was saying “. . . the teachers you have had in your . . .” Our teachers—I thought of Mr. Baranelli trying to teach Bill Lovelace how to recobabulate and Martha Cunliff almost crying when she realized she wouldn’t get to hear about Mr. Fullington’s kinfolks in Gadsden anymore. Gladys Blackburn always thought Miss Gatchell owned a paper company because she was always saying “Take out one sheet of paper.” Miss Doss was always stimulating sales bysaying “Write that 20 times.” We must get back to the speaker though. “And as you seniors face the world your only regrets should be ... ” Regrets—Yes, there are many of them. We regret that of the thirty-six thousand twelve jokes Bill Reed, WE REMEMBER the class wit, tried, he only got nineteen laughs. Also we regret that June Carney is going to be a teacher—as we think of the poor little children that will undergo such agony. All the boys regret Adrianne Teague’s decision to run an old maids’ home—she made the best biscuits. Robert Perkins regrets leaving Peggy behind. I glanced at the clock, it must be time for him to stop, I thought. Yes, it was for he was saying . . . and as we glimpse a vision of the future.” The future—I looked around me and tried to do just that. There's Fay Woody—I wonder who'll win the race to the altar, Fay and Gene McBrayer or Shirley Perkins and Jerry Thrasher. In the future I can just see Jimmy Holland finishing his best seller “A Stump Grows in Pell City.” I bet Joyce Dorsky will be the first lady weight lifter with a record of two tons, two pounds, two ounces. And James Rice will probably be drawing great crowds at the State Fair with his sword swallowing act. Paul Billings and Sarah Marie Rose are sure to get the lead in that new musical “Don’t Look Now” which will be given for the blind. I can just see Frank Bragan as the only man in football's history ever to be on all-American Honorable Mention thirty-two seasons. I feel sure Sarah Spurlock will make headlines by doing something spectacular as winning the American finals for the potatoe race at the Olympics. I hope Jo Ann Little realizes her dream of being a home demonstration agent at Fleehoph, Alabama. I really must listen to the speaker. Sitting here reminiscing I’ve heard very little he’s said. “. . . and as you enter the various walks of life, may the knowledge you have obtained at this institution gladden the hearts of others and enroll you to begin a useful life of service to mankind.” —Priscilla Gorce TO BE OPENED ONLY We, the January Class of 1950, being of relatively sound mind, do hereby make and publish this, our last will and testament. NICKEY VELOTAS Being Of Sound Mind We. the graduating seniors of May, 1950, being of decidedly unsound mind (due to the influence exerted upon us our past four years) and extremely sound bodies (developed by the hardships endured) hereby declare this our last will and testament. Alvin Slaughter leaves his ability to get along with Miss Garrett to the next who needs it. Richard George leaves his locker to “Zeke” Busby. ‘'Mac” Heaton makes the gift of his fine baritone voice to Mr. Calvert for use in sound experiments. Penfield Ivey figures he has sufficient gray matter to give David Butsch enough to get out. Jim Lynagh is ihe recipient of Dundas May-nord’s oratory talents. Gilmore Cairns is giving things away right and left—Mr. Baranelli gets his track shoes and Harry Lee gets his “ways with the wimmin.” Don Kirkpatrick wills his silent, diplomatic manner to—anyone interested in selling ear plugs. To Bob Russell goes Bill Sumner’s executive ability. “Square” Moore wants Forrest Reynolds to inherit his manly physique. Pat Bigler bestows upon Ann McKinley his knack for solving physics problems. Joy Tindall wills Glenn Baker to Lynn Westbrook in exchange for Ronnie. Margaret Troncalli wills her epistle on “How to Live on $500 a Month and Endure It” to all future D. O. pupils. Mary Charles Wiggins wills her wiles and wiggles to Terry O’Neil who does all right on her own. Ina Mae Wingard wants everybody in the “Five-hour Club” to have her knack for getting along with the wardens (teachers, that is). Betty Jo Wren wants Julie Collum to have her snappy, zazzie personality that comes with being a senior. Fred Britton wants Tony Rose to have his favorite motto “If at first you don’t succeed—quit!” Ann Glascock leaves her interest in the Norwood Methodist Church to Carol West who would do well to make use of it. Betty Hamner wills her intellectual look to Ann McKinley. Betty hopes that it will pass Ann Being Of Sound Mind in shorthand. Jean Ann Holmes bequeaths her 250 demerits to Lavette Teague (J. A. thinks that everybody needs a few to liven things up!). Betty Killian wants to leave (period). Martha Lea bequeaths her ingenious power of getting along so well with “Muscular Mike” to future physics students. Pat and Mimi Barnes receive a large portion of charm and talent from Shirley and June LeFoy. Ann Madonia leaves her R. 0. T. C. uniforms to Anita Hendricks. Ann feels like it should be back in the family. Ruth Mallette leaves her Honor Society pin to Kathryn Cumbee who will probably need it before she finishes. Jane Manning bequeaths her smile and sweet disposition to all Phillipians hoping that they’ll use them well, both in and out of school. Jeffie Mothershed wills her wit (?) to M. H. Alexander (on second thought, maybe M. H. will come into her own when she grows up!). Mary Cecilia Nero and Martha Shackleford bequeath their long lasting friendship to Margaret Horn and Shirley Maynord. Ann Nighs-wonger leaves her ability to “tickle the ivories” to Ann McCollum. Ann and McCollum and Duke Ellington plan to form a piano trio. Jo Ann Ramsden wills her quiet ways and soft voice to Kathleen Peacock, who, she is sure, can use them. Rita Rivas leaves all of the okeys she was caught without to Miss Penruddocke. Ann Rountree leaves her love for that certain English teacher (whose initials are F. F.) to that boy from Paul Hayne. Betty Rose Shores wants all the girls to have her latest book “How to Win Your Boyfriend’s Class Ring.” Nancy Sparks leaves her famous line “I don’t know, Mr. Fullington,” to Buddy Humphries. May he use it well in the years to come! Betty Belanns Kaye Henderson May, IDIil) Greater Birmingham, Alabama May, 1960 Professor Jane E. Zuber, B.A., M.A., Ph.D., Mrs., L.L.D., P.D.Q. Oxford University London, England Dear Zuber: I have just finished reading your new book “The Psychological and Mercenary Effects of Radar in Leap Year.” Thanks for the free copy. Although you’re the first female professor at Oxford, I know you’re still interested in all our old schoolmates at P. H. S., so I’ll try to bring you up to date on their activities. The other night, by means of my R. C. S. (radio perfected by Ross, Carbonie, and Smith, the famous radio superscientists), Kyle Vess, “The Fat Man,” Sidney Braswell, “Crime Phorographer.” and Joyce Posey. “Counterspy,’ all ganged up on my nerves. The excitement combined with a double dose of “Forbes-Ford Fried Froglegs.’ patented by Mary Frances and Hardie, gave me reason to call for Dr. Robert C. Garrison who was out on a call, getting the tomatoes out of Ann Bates eyes. She gets heckled regularly for being off tune singing “I Am A Latin Jack” to the tune of (supposedly) “I Do the Dirty Work.’ Tn my delirium, while waiting for the doctor, I recalled our inimitable other show-woman. Karen Klassen, who is currently seen in “Green Slippers” sequel to “Red Shoes,” produced by Gene Cooper. After T recovered I made an appointment at “House of Kresses,” Birmingham’s biggest new department store, for Martha Shackleford, Peggy Hendrix, and Joanne Powell to model for me the latest creations by designer Margaret Grayson. Meandering down the street in my new frock, I was bumped into by Joan Cameron, the rising Met star, who, with her beret pulled low, was wandering incognito. She was heading indirectly for the T. V. Tower to appear with Glenn Youngblood and Mary Kate Fulton on the “Peeples' Hour,” directed by Agatha and sponsored by the Rogers, Rogers, Rogers and Rogers Co. (Charles, Cleon, Don, and Swanson), producers of “Rogers’ Little River Pills” for rivers whose tributaries have run dry. After the songs “Ko-kee-cho” and “Cho-kee-ko” by the famous song-writing team Marilyn Belanus and Bobby Williams, Nancy Cunningham and Pat Bigler told of their recent stay with the cannibals in South Africa as missionaries. On my way home I passed by the new twelve-lane super tunnel under Red Mountain, engineered by John Benton. By the way, Kaye Hederson is having domestic difficulties because his tunnel from Phillips to Harry George’s, in rivalry with John’s, is taking up so much of his time. As I opened up my Birmingham News, now edited by Harris Burns, the crusading editor known for his fight against highly starched collars on men’s shirts, I saw that Ruth Claire Foster, the girl who couldn’t make up her mind where to go to college, has just dropped out of the Lower Solbbiun School of Interior Decorating, her eighteenth choice. Further down on the same page, I noticed an item about the Murphy twins. You remember the Murphy twins, they always wanted to be working in a night club. Well, I guess they're doing that now, they clean up the peanut and popcorn papers on the floor between acts. Teleete Frawley is headlining the act of Thornburgs Touring Vaudeville Troope, performing there now assisted by Ronald Higgins, Betty Fay Queen, Gertie Marcus and Jean Ann Holmes. In the Sports section, pictures of Sidney Scott, Bruce Gaylor, Harris Kendrick, and Bob Norred make an imposing array. They’ve just been nominated to the All-American of Bill Clegg, the famous sports announcer. I see in the amusements division that Sonny Carter, the great humorist, is now doing Jack Benny’s program on Sunday nights and doing very well, too, although Don Meadows as “Rochester” is stealing the show. On the front page. Marvin Young, now state governor, has just broken ground for the first diamond mine in Alabama; he's already had placed on his door in silver letters “Diamond Marvin Young.” (Great Expectations!) Velma Stewart, Marvin’s secretary, and Donna Pack, her understudy, stand poised in the background waiting for the great man to make a statement. While I was sitting there reading the paper, I droused on off into dreamland in my first dream Joan Silver the greatest woman archer was shooting bows and arrows into Joe Lother; Gene Montgomery, the eternal child, was shooting spitballs at Jo Ann Cowan; Jean Gibbons, the letter-writer, was still licking postage stamps. As you can see, “Squirt, a lot is going on here at home, not only in reality but also in dreams. Try to come for a vacation, and we’ll go see all our schoolmates we had such good times with at Phillips High. Love, Marian McElroy MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Ann Bates, Kaye Henderson MR.
