OTH ER GRADUATES MARY MAVOLINE SYLVESTER DOROTHY BENDALL f mu ...aim 745 We Slam Cflcae The last performance is over, the circus must pack and be on its way, but a great deal must be left to the next troupe. These were the words of boss Sammy Kendrick as he strode away and left me to inform the members of the troupe that they must all leave something. To set an example, Sammy Kendrick left his shy twinkle to any girl that can appreciate it. Starting my mission, I walked over to the Side Show tents where Tall Mann, Pat Shelby, stubbornly refused to leave Libby jordon to anyone. Hoping for more success, I strolled over to where Strong man George Sims was gingerly placing a 1000 lb. weight in his trunk, left handed. 'Putting down the bundle of 200 lb. weights he had been holding in his right hand, he decided to bequeath his curly hair to Robbie jo Robins, who hates to roll hers up. I was leaving when Clown Charlie Blalock came in, tripping over a coil of rope. He informed me that he would just leave, period! Continuing I met Bobby Westbrook, the Sword-swallower, looking under some rope for a stray sword. He decided to confer his ingenious ability to pour sulphuric acid into salt upon jack Real. Hearing our conversation, Roland Dean willed the P. H. S. Big Top to Billy Mullins. Leaving the Side Shows and crossing the lot, I saw Elaine Smith, and Ralph Connell removing the posters they had painted. They decided to leave their pens and brushes to Mary jane Tapscott and Douglas Marshman. The Big Top was next, and just inside I came upon our two famous eques- triennes, Elizabeth Sims and Margie Price who willed their big brown eyes to anyone who can use them to an advantage. After talking to the trapeze artists I found that: Patsy Sartain had left her telephoning ability to anyone with a certain stars phone number. The acrobat section was next, and as I picked my way through spring boards and dodged flying people, I discovered that Ioyce Pridmore and Virginia Finley had willed the good times in Hueytown and Shades Cahaba to Lois Ann Orr and Ramona Bentley. Margaret Herndon trans- ferred her ability to giggle anywhere at anytime to Richard Marshman, who needed it. Edna Morgan came over from the food wagon long enough to be- queath her ability to tangle things to Kay Klassen. Betty Tombrello gave her 745 We Shaw Glow ability to say the wrong thing at the wrong time to Linda Bonrvolous. joy Belle lieid bestowed her straight hair on Annis Tollett. Bidding the acrobats farewell and walking over to the lion cages and talking to the trainers, I received the following information: Thomas Reeves left Post Office duty to anyone crazy enough to take it in for the winter. Ed Whaley conferred on Swift Williams his ability to tease Instructor Craig about her Cadillac. After this hair-raising experience, I went to the technicians' tent where Sylvia Durbin and jane Ginn bequeathed their abilities to Al Dabney. In the band and music tent, Norma McCurdy left her baton to Ann Madonia. Vivian Dattoli. willed her saxophone to Connie Campbell. Mary Ann Dudley wills her favorite instructor, Mr. Bailey, to all new troupe members. Continuing to the gypsy dancers tent, Gail Ellison wills to Kathleen Jones her ability to laugh at the most inopportune time. Back to the Big Top--jane Adams and Pat Hurlbert willed their abilities to understand and appreciate the ringmaster, Hamlet, who directs us all, to Kathryn Hairston and Richard Russell. Sue Montgomery left her pet bear, Lover Boy to no one. Because the boss said You can't take it with you, Rosalie Ippolite is going to prove him wrong by refusing to bestow her affection for the P. H. S. instructors on anyone. Louis Culver bequeathed his flagpole sitting job to anyone! Barker Ted Nordman left his circus whip to Miss Benson. For the last word Henrietta Whittle, Barbara Wyatt, and I leave all the Heroes to all the girls who'll have the fun that we did. jean Osborne fn 76a Gayiial gall January 1969: The Kendrick Brothers' Circus Comes to Town! Mary Dove Cantley and I decide to go this very night. After buying our tickets from Pat Cray and giving them to Charlie Deacy, we were greeted by Sammy himself, who tells us that most of our senior class are members of his troupe. Suddenly we are surrounded by Harrell Henson, Bobby Black, Tommy jefferson, Vivian Shelton, and Frances Sherrill, the clowns. Then the show is ready to go on, and after we are led to our seats by lack Clay and Norman Routon, the lights dim and the band, consisting of Glenn jackson, Sara Shaddix, Norman Dreher, Marilyn Hallmark, Haskill johnson, Carole Healy, and Robert Stallings, and con- ducted by Sol Shapiro, breaks into the opening notes of the Star-Spangled Banner. Marlyn McEachern steps into the spotlight and as her voice fills the big tent, I glance around to see if I recognize anyone. That old sea captain, John Hutch- eson, is sitting between our state senators, Joann Kelly and Margaret McCaughy. The big fat man with the carnation in his lapel is Bobby Barnes, the tooth pick magnate, and that handsome Caballero is Ben Phifer, who is staring in his latest picture with Mitzi Wright, better known to us as june. By now the lights are growing dim for. the Daredevils of the Air, Betty jane fBroken Bonesj Tate and Richard Thrower. Next come the trained elephants, with Louise Murray and Norma F rock, as their trainers. Then the equestriennes, Mary Jane Kicker, Sadie jean Levio, and Billie Faye Watson, and show off their stately white horses. Since half the show is over, I think I'll go down the midway. I pass the side shows and am surprised to see Ted Nordman barking about Robert Kieran, the muscle man, and jimmy Todd, the sword swallower. Next I see the motorcycle racers, Hubert Reeves, Nell Whitley, Kidd Collins, Franke Atkinson, and Robert Black, getting all set for their performance. At the star-studded tent of Madame Christine, Madame, who is none other than Leona Roth, gazes into her fish bowl, fa va aww aaa and the other members of the senior class appear before me. Jean Osborne, jerry Berman, and Terry Huffstutler are all busy over test tubes trying to invent an atomic blond of perfect proportion. Ann Ellis, who is a second Raphael, and her models, Danna White, and Ann Peacock have become famous in the art world. Tommie Martin, a comedy star, has her own show with Carolyn Moore and Patsy Adderhold appearing on it. Helen Chappelle and Mary Ann McDonald are starring in a hit show on Broadway. Ada Joyce Traynor and Jean Mobley own the Popover Modeling Agency. Some of their models are Mildred Lawrence, Donnie Halbrooks, Marie Earle Coggins, Elsa Colpack, and Jean Moore. Leaving Madame Christine, I go back, and arrive in the Big Top just in time to see Martha Ann Templeton come shooting out of a cannon. Next comes the lion act, with Phillip Reeder as Lion Tamer! As he puts the lions through their paces, Ralph johnson, Carolyn Cagle, and Bill Tatum stand armed and ready in case Phillip bites one of the lions. The Press photographers, Neal Ford and Ben Neighbors, are busy taking pictures. Some of the housewives there are Dorothy Bendall, Barbara Caw- thorne, Norma Frock, Gloria Cray, Marion Harper, Clara Nunnelly, Gloria Smith, Mavoline Sylvester, and Ioan Wallace. Next, on the tight ropes are Ann Edmundson, jackie Sewell, and Virginia Lane. Following this, we watch the trained seal act with Laverne Tollet and Lenora Thaggard, and Wyndol Hamer as their trainers. Last comes the Star-Spangled grand finale, starring Sue Pettit and Mary Virciglio, as the flag flutters through the breeze, they float through the air like birds. As the last notes sound, Mary Dove and I hurry down to see our class mates ageain. Polly White 7071 8 JANUARY, 1949 3 , al 1 N T. MR. PETE VLAHAKES raeeaytauaa As we top the foot-hills of success, We sense the challenge of ranges of further progress. The shimmering beauty of pinnacles of gold, Seem to speak of the adventure which they enfold. Man is an explorer whose ideals force him to go Over mountains, into valleys, and many a plateau. The verdant mountains, majestic against the blue, Fling out a haughty defiance: materialism we must subdue. Even though our class has reached one peak more, A point that we've ne'er attained before, Others lie ahead that we must scale, To meet life's calls we cannot fail. For from the lofty heights of the ultimate span, The world below seems simple, how clear the plan! The low-lying fogs of prejudice rise and fade, And the fences of greed fall 'neath distance's blade. On to further horizons-yes-but to earth we must return For life calls us to work-though for the mountains we yearn Back to earth we come with varied colored flowers Of kindness, justice, truth-to plant in peaceful bowers. -Elza Smith JCZQSAWPQQM Have you ever wondered how much fun it would be to go to a circus and see a thousand cages with people in them giving away free prizes? You haven't? Well, no matter, for if you- Step right up folks. Here you will find the only free prizes ever before given away in this or any other circus. They're none other 'than those left by the mad May graduating seniors fthe ones in the cagesl to the unsuspecting undergraduates. So as you-look outl duckl there go jerry Coldstein's and Don Montgomery's winning smiles across the tent right on the eager faces of George Nashnand Wallace Heaton-hand your tickets fthe free prizes are only 84.98, to doorwoman Polly Perry, you are ready to enjoy the show in the Phillips and Stough Circus. Once inside, you look about you at the multitude of heads: some very young-the undergradsg some very old-the seniors, and some middle-aged- the teachers. In the first cage Margaret Reid and Mary jane Legg are handing over their type-writers bit-by-bit to Betty jo Wren and Nita Ann Burns. Proceeding clock- wise from six o'clock to twelve, you encounter Tommy Costner carrying, alas, Shades Mountain in his arms-rather, sections of old Shades. Of course his legacy is the best parking places known to R. Malet-head Mallette, E. Hen- peeked Henley and - Sam Spade? Dear Tom, with Redheads Kathleen Cum- mings and Virginia Cooper chasing him. The cage opposite reveals jean Pruitt willing her lovely voice to Pat Merchant. As you continue,' you observe: Fay Woody leaving lt to Mary Frances Adams, Frances Crimes adorning Eleanor Kieswetter with her adorable sweaters, john Sims' oration ability being pounded on Graham Shanks, and Rebecca Davis waiting to bequeath her cello to whichever girl has enough courage and talent to play upon it. Proceed no further, instinct tells you. Two dishevelled characters ap- proach you saying, One hand-two ducks-three cackling geese-four corpulent porpoisesf' Seniors surely! Oh well, at once the odor of Nancy Bryant's cooking abiiity issues to your senses, and you notice Nancy handing over her know-how to Betty Dale McEachern. On the other hand, though, it isn't surprising to spy Teddye Travis sneaking out with her cooking knowledge still her own, as she'll be needing it come june. jane and Don Martin leave their talking speeds of 120 and 14 words per minute respectively to any soul that needs tempering. In the next cage you espy Bebe Whitfield placing her golden-red curls on Milner Snuggs QDear Melj. Advancing, you are 'aware of Fey Fraser and Neil Cobb leaving their place on the stairs to the lunchroom to the Eskew twins and gal frien,s. . . Five pairs of don Alfredo's favorite tweezers-six hundred Macedonian warriors in full battle array-seven mummies from the ancient aged secret sacred crypts of Egypt-eight dozen nasty nurtured nasturtiums from the Nut-House zctecfhata PWM Nurseries . . . stammer those two seniors again, whom you now know to be the reporters for this arteecle and are rather tetched-yes, touched by Kenneth Forbes' leaving his brilliant arguing nature to Charles Copeland. John Miller fMelville IIIJ is at present tediously and meticulously bequeath- ing his understanding of Polonius to Robert Garrison, who'll need it. Rebecca Beattly leaves Joyce Dorsky her powerful voice, although J. D. doesn't need it. Betty Ann Jones and Betty Littrell leave their shorthand books to Ann Madoina and Mary Cecelia Nero, Joyce Griffin leaves Judith Berry her admirable wit, and Jimmie Gillespie leaves. A flash of light faster than the speed of lightning. Oh, it's only Bert Con- stantine wearing one of his new bow ties and watching Ellen Little waiting to slink over her Veronica Lake appealx to someone who can wear it Cnamely Marion McElroyJ. As you continue clockwise from midnight to six again, you are aware of Marilyn Mandy's sweet blush, which she imparts to Moise. Crutcher Ross advances to tell you of his will-he's left all of his huge, thick sweaters to Wylene Ryan ibut for why?J. In the next cage you notice that Ann McCollum is the recipient of Nancy Shiels' driving manners for should wee shay mannerisms?J. To Jane Zuber, Marian Rockett, and Mary Frances Forbes, Lulu Parrish leaves her melodious speaking. And C. Rookie Jones tosses his gat to E. Windmill Hatfield. Suddenly you have a strange encounter with Ellen Power, Carolyn Spradley, and Louise Chandler scouting around for likely suspects for their poetic ability to write poetry. And there's Margie Burrus looking for an essay aspirant. In the last cage you find Robert Medlin leaving his ability? to read Cicero to Hill Womble. There comes a time in everyone's life when the circus must come to a finis, and so the time has come with you. As you pass out of the gay tent, you notice at your side Ruth Brownlee, the only senior left intact because nobody wants her Oldsmobile, and you remember the song your mother used to sing to you- 1t's never too late 'til two, and then it's too latef' But what's this? An open air theatre maybee? A band wagon with bars you run into-a wagon crammed full of the graduating members of the Mirror Board: furiously piling their Frankenstein notes on How to Roam the Halls Without Being Caught by Miss Pennruddocken to the cubs, who'll be needing them next semester, heaving notes of love and friendship to all fellow graduatesg and wish- ing sympathy cakes on those they leave behind. Inside the Big Top Frank Key and his trained monkeys are performing. The first event, dancing by Tina W'hitsonsky and Linda Bourvoulas, ballet artists, is introduced by james jackson, ring master. Next on the program is Alan Alexander, man on the flying trapeze. Between the perform- ances the crowd is kept roaring by clowns Bobs Groover and Barrett. Music is furnished by jean Pruitt, Dorothy Snoddy, Amelia Murray, and Mary Ann Add- ington, accompanied by Madelyn McRae, Queen of Boogie, Ioe Gilbert at the trombone, and jack Hotlips Austin on the trumpet. Richard Nickell is the be- hind-the-scenes radio technician. Emmett Lucas, selling programs, has an excellent opportunity to look over the audience. In this section reserved for the annual Doctors Convention is Dr. Richard Russell, President of the American Medical Association. With him are Doctors Neville, Bonner, Carmichael, Miller, Watson, Vaughn, Garrigues and Shiels. Governor Big jim Ingram is in his box, along with Lt. Governor joe Curtis. Their political machine is clicking again. Thomas Moxley, the greatest living Shakespearean actor, is here with the famous critic, john Constantine. From the field of literature are the novelist Louann Parrish and Carolyn Spradley, Poet Laureate of Alabama. Those two renowned rivals in the news- paper field are here. They are editors Walston and Mills, with their respective social editors, Connie Spurgeon and Marilyn McAteer. Here from the Army is Major General Walter Berry and his staff: Colonels Parker, Arthur, Steinmehl and Major Chestnutt. In their midst is Major Rosemary Graddick of the WAC. Chauffeur for the group is Pfc. Ira DeMent III. Bill Porter, a confirmed bachelor and the most famous after-dinner speaker in the South, is here with his secretary, Sarah Ellen Reagan. Seated in front of them is Stephen Leontis, the famous long-haired pianist. Shaw UW in '69 Receiving looks of interest are Ann Tolleson, Mary Louise Cooper, Ann O'Halloran and Kaki McAllister of the Real Model Agency. Their biggest patron is Richmond and Cox, Inc., designers of smart clothes. Lawyers Rosenthal and Rox are seen buying peanuts for the elephants. Their biggest client now is Mr. Clyde Roddam, chairman of the board of White Sewing Machine Company and well on the way to his third million. Reese Mallette, the famous creator of the Yantze River Control project, has drifted in to enjoy the age-old amusements of the circus. Kathleen jones is hurrying in, late again. She must still be tired. Joyce Addington and jimmy Pilkington are here. They just stepped down from the Metropolitan. In a group of sports enthusiasts are jimmy Cantley, the nation's number one sports announcerg Hobart Grooms, sports editor of the Birmingham Postg Hugh Bostick and Bill Thead, contenders for golf' s highest honor, and Weems Hollowell and Dan Englebert, greatest doubles tennis team in America. Alabama's filibustering senators, john Sims and Swift Williams, are here, happy in their latest victory. The teaching profession is represented by Pat Rogers, instructor of F renchg Polly Perry, professor of Physics, Carol Iemison, professor of Lating and Phyllis Lee, Dean of Women at Vanderbilt University. The house lights are dimmed, a spot light is flashed on the center ring, a fanfare is sounded by the trumpets, and the master of Ceremonies, stepping for- ward, announces: Ladies and Gentlemen!
