Now under all the strain and strife of war Will that brave bark in storm still keep afloat? Will dictators destroy our sacred law That gives to free men equal right to vote? Will we in future have to raise our hands And even fall upon our knees in church In homage to an avid little man Who soon will fall from his careening perch? This cannot beg our ship will never sink As long as youth can strive and feel and think. -EMILY CHILDS HIC BIIHROR 7 I -g iof1 'tA:w-fjti 1 ,A -A g tw-MPM 5 1 l t Dedication In deep appreciation and recognition of his sincere efforts in our behalf, the Mirror Staff of nineteen hun- dred forty two dedicates this Mirror to DR. During this news round- up we will call in correspondents from all parts of the school who will submit individual reports on the current activities of their specific sections. They will give first hand information on what is happening in the various organizations. First, we shall call in Emily Childs, president of the Works Poetic Board. We take you now by short wave to the picture of Our School Today. Come in, page six. We return you now to WPI-IM and another member of WPB, Mary Elizabeth Ekeroyd, following whom we shall call in other correspondents. The Haunted Stream The fierce sun even must be blind To cast its dazzle on the shrunken Lakeg and earth must crack to sullenly Exhale its trembling breath From smouldering dust: and fraught trees stoop In vain to find their self-made shade. But all is not lost. There is untouched A shrine of verdant dampness still: A mossy seat among cloven roots Hangs over a sweetly haunted stream, Where no heat is, for massive boughs Above repel the sunlight's glare. The emerald depths so cool and clear, Though watered only by the dew, Never fail to murmur whisperingly A song of solace, peace, and cheer. -MARY E. AKEROYD. THE MIRROR 37 Phillips Priorities of '42 Rationing has gone into effect on a large scale, but I have just received news from Mr. Henderson in Washington, D. C., that certain things will not be taken away from us yet. Therefore, the following seniors generously give priorities on their special individual commodities to particular students chosen after due deliberation and careful consideration of their respective qualifications. Mary Elizabeth Akeroyd transfers priority on her bottles of peroxide and am- monia to Hubert CRedl Owens. Sam Dillard gives priority on his love for the women to Duke Bradford. Emily Childs wishes priority on her place on the Mirror Board off on Jane Phillips. Q Jimmy Kendricks bestows priority on his ability to impersonate glamour girls on Robert Brown. Annette Till leaves priority on her love for Auburn and the A. T. O.'s to Mollie Holland. James Liles bequeaths priority on his beautiful baritone voice to little Jane Stopinski. Duane Dickson gives priority on her outstanding talent in music to Dickie Deas. John Slaughter leaves Margaret Adams with great regret, refusing to give up a priority on her. Mary Louise Nash promises priority on her complete set of o. k.'s to anyone for a just consideration. Jack Schuster passes priority on his innocence on to Jane Pierce. Flonrie Ann Bethea gives priority on her typing speed to anyone with two fingers. . Jimmy Brittain donates the Defense Council priority on all waste paper. Anne McGaha bestows priority on her fickleness on Billy Freeman. Luther Shorty Strange leaves priority on his pocket full of chalk to little Stumpy Watson. Edwina Pass consigns to Joy Stewart priority on her love for Ensley. Adrian Ringland bequeaths priority on his beauitful blue eyes and black curly hair to handsome Malcolm Tanner. Betsy Douglas designates Annie Stuart Calhoun to receive express priority on her cuteness , since she says is in A-1 need of it. Martha Jane Beard donates priority on 59 empty fingernail polish bottles and a set of false teeth to Margaret Bayless. Bill Hints assigns priority on his sweet and loving nature to Betty Giles. Betty Lemon leaves priority on Nellie Gray fmascot of senior playl to Herbert Hamilton, who just LOVES chickens ! However, Mr. Henderson stipulates there must be a price ceiling placed on her output. Harvey Kimbrough gives priority on his frequent blushes and his ability to get a joke first, to Bettye Jo McIntosh. Mary Grey Ellis consigns priority on her little frogs from biology class to Dorothy Tyrell. Martha Reynolds assigns priority on her seat by the door in the art room to anyone as thirsty as she is. THE MIRROR 38 Bill Culp leaves priority on his entire stock of vitamin pills and brass knuckles to little Jane Roy. Bettye Ellis bequeaths priority on her winning way land I don't mean just with horsesl to Toady Smith. Ralph Wadeson yields priority on his photogenic qualities to Hamilton Perkins. Lorraine Rose prefers priority on her ever present sense of rhythm to go to Marie Butler. Anne Porter wishes priority on her abandoned ambition to grow off on Bobby McAllister. Bill Wilson leaves priority on all his cork stoppers to some bottleneck. These fortunate people who have rated the above listed priorities may hoard them or expend them lavishly as they see fit by special dispensation of Mr. Hen- derson and -NANCY WOODSON. F. O. A. P. Oh-Take me out to the ball game. Hello, folks. Here is your sports reporter with his line of F. O. A. P. or Filings on Atheltic Phillipians for the benefit of those people interested. The gridiron is losing eleven players, all of whom are lettermen. From guard position are Bernard Blake, Johnnie Grimes, and Jack Schuster. Tackles who will be missing next year are Gordon Beene, Charlie Wise, and Luther Worsham. From the end position are leaving Roy Ledbetter and Ralph Patterson. The backfield will be greatly lacking due to the loss of Billy Culp, Mauro Nappi, and Jack Walsh. From the hard wood floors of basketball, several star players will be absent. High scorers, Miles Dean and John Key, will be greatly missed. Other cagers who are leaving are R. O. Brown, Gordon Beene, Perry De Shazo, George Johnson, Roy Ledbetter, Johnnie Montgomery, Henry Nixon, and Luther Worsham. The diamond nine of '43 will sorely miss John Key, Miles Dean, and Charlie Hayne who have consistently held up the batting average of the team. Also, the hurling of south-paw Jack Walsh will be gone. From the Raider thinclads, a large number of good trackmen will be lost. From the shot and discus, are Gordon Beene, Billy Culp, and John Grimes. From the running events Charles Clark, Ed Carr, Roy Ledbetter, Tillman White, and Luther Worsham. All have been point gainers and formed the back-bone of the track team. The Raider Racqueteers will be at quite a loss due to the absence of Johnnie Montgomery, James Grayson, Edwin Richardson, and Richard Tarry. These netmen have re-enforced the tennis team and have usually come out on top. All of these athletes are the cream of the crop, each in his own field and some in more than one. Whether they continue their athletic careers in college or the professional world, they will always be remembered as the Athletes of the Class of '42. That's all for now concerning the past. Just keep up the good work and turn out more and better sportsmen so the Phillips Raiders will go marching on outside Phillips in football, basketball, baseball, track, and tennis. -RALPH WADESON. THE MIRROR 39 O. P. M. Hello, ladies and gentlemen, this is your What's What Reporter, telling all he sees and hears on this the eleventh day of June, nineteen hundred and sixty two, by special permission of the Office of Prophecy Making. Admiral William Culp in his latest message to the President of the United States, William B. Hairston, stated that the reconstruction of China which has taken so long is near completion. He praised the work of the American doctors in the way the women M. D.'s cooperated with the men. For several years after graduation from Johns Hopkins Doctors Cruse and Wright competed with the eminent physicians Meyer, Ledbetter, Wadeson and Draper for the Nobel prize which is given to doctors. Veteran aviators Anna Bouloukos, Colleen Stanton, and Helen Lambard piloted a stratoliner carrying oil well supplies to the experimental station of the Woodruff Oil Company in Little America. Mr. Sage Woodruff and Mr. William Hints have extensively explored the lands of Antarctica and have found them to be extremely wealthy in deposits of oil and precious metals. Your W. W. Reporter heard the news and sports announcer, John Slaughter, say that professional football is apt to become as popular as baseball since it is under the leadership of Ralph Patterson. He also announced that there has been a change in the staff of the New York Times and the new staff is to be as follows: news editors-Marjorie Esco and Paul Ponder, society editors-Betty Lemon, Elizabeth Tacker, and Carol Gardien. M. L. Nash, cafe society reporter, in her Sunday column in the Philadelphia Record included spot phrases of Eugenie Lassen's newest book Life as a Phillipian , a book which tells of Miss Lassen's school days with such famous personages as Patricia Pope, the music critic: Ann Beddow and A. R. Thornton, of the exclusive Fifth Avenue fashion shoppe, Beddow and Thornton: and Jimmy Brittain and Frances Mc- Allister, of Metro, McAllister and Brittain Productions. An edifice which surpasses any structure built by man was dedicated today by Hayden W. Wood, president of the Western Electric Company and owner of the building, in his home town of Birmingham, Alabama. The one hundred and sixty story building was designed by the architects-Kendrick, Kimbrough and Wulffaert. Mr. Wood has engaged the following to manage this newest enterprise of his com- pany: lawyers-Bryan, Crews and Jeffery, business administrators-F. M. Love and Companyg and Hughes, Till, Porter, Adair, and O'Keef Chemical Supply Company will take charge of the laboratory direction.
