GLADYS WILLIAMS Library Club Class Poem To the school we think sublime, We say at graduation time: Through the years we've loved you so, And now, we sincerely hate to go. Our commencement departure is very nigh As we think of dear olf Phillips High. When we were freshmen we tried so hard To become worthy citizens for a reward. As sophomores and juniors strong and bold Our aim was to do as we were told. We finally reached the senior mark When we felt that we had started a spark. As we leave the maroon and gray To face our duties day after day, We'll remember those who helped us make Great progress steps for our own sake. With hearts of sorrow, yet joy and praise, Banners of Phillips We'll always raise. by Roosevelt Lyons and Deeman Bulluck Class Song Dear Phillips High, dear Phillips High The time has come. The time has come for us to say so long, But as you know our futures Lie ahead of us, so we must go to that Successful shore. Yes, we'll remember you and yours forever, Although we leave you now with parting tears. We'll think of you and all your helpful guidance. Dear Phillips High, we love, we love you so. We leave you now, we leave you now With sorrow, But memories of you will linger on. We'll never forget the happy Years we spent with you, And pray that dreams of our Success come true by Frances Shelley, Helen Hines, Ernest Farmer and Benjamin Hart A 26 THOMAS WILLIAMS Choral Club, Drum Major. CLASS MOTTO If you have knowledge, let others light their candles by it. CLASS FLOWER White Carnation CLASS COLORS Blue and White Class Prophegf After being nominated the Best Actress for the year 1971, I took a well- earned vacation and traveled around the world. Boarding the plane at Holly- wood's airport, I saw Soloman Douglas, Minister of Los Angeles's largest church, and Paul Bulluck, Sacramento's District Attorney. While conversing with them in New York, I discovered that they were only attending the pre- mier of James Parker's concert at Carnagie Hall. Then Iheard someone calling my name. Of course I recognized Otis Hines's voice as Disc Jockey for hundreds of America's teenagers. We had a pleasant conversation con- cerning other members of the class of 63. He said that Alphonza Draughn is president of Pall Mall's Tobacco Factory, Benjamin Hart and Thomas Wil- liams own a night club in Las Vegas, Geraldine Whitehead and Erma Heath are private secretaries to Daniel Lyons who is Vice-President of American Broadcasting Company, and Flora Bulluck is a Nurse in Florida. While I was resting in my suite at Joyce Cooper's hotel in New York and reading poetry by Deeman Bulluck, Curtis Mack visited me. It was indeed a pleasure to see him, for I was most anxious to hear how he achieved the title Most Valuable Player of the Year. The Giants being my favorite team, made his story extremely interesting. We dined together at a Chinese restaurant owned by Corrine Parker, Gloria and Blanchie Pittman. When I arrived in Paris, I had the opportunity of receiving a dinner invita- tion from President Charles de Gaulle. For this occasion I wanted to look my best. Margie Thorne and Andrea Whitehead styled my hair at their beauty salon, and I bought my gown from Madame Originals, owned by Della Hill where two attractive young ladies, Earlene Pittman and Helen Green modeled the latest fashions. Before leaving Paris, lhad my portrait painted by Carlton Cloyd. Mr. Cloyd told me that Peggy Hill and Gilbert Daniels were in England designing the queen's 3250.000 mansion. After Paris came the lands of mystery: Japan, Hawaii, and Alaska. lncidently Barbara Lyons and Dazell Hill reside in Hawaii and are wives of United States Senators. Next came Canada where I saw the missionaries, Mary Lyons, and Helen Hines. They told me that Charles Allen is a Mountie Policeman there. During my stay in Canada I also attended an opera in which Gracie Johnson was a great star. I was informed by her that Frances Shelly was on a good- will tour in Africa. When I returned to Hollywood, Acey Cooper, Vice-President of Warner Brothers, told me that Calvin Wiggins was to play opposite me in my next picture, Strangers by Day, written by Loretta Silver. If you wish, you may read of my tour in a book published by Annie Tay- lor. She has also written biographies of Charles Battle and Lorenza Silver. If you would like to know how Mr. Battle and Mr. Silver survived three months on the planet Mars, read these books at The Sevella Sessons Library in Washington D.C. - - by Linda Cooper 27 NEATEST Della H111 Paul Bulluck FRIENDLIEST Flora Bulluck Acey Cooper Super Glona P1ttman Curtis Mack Helen Hines Benj am 1n Hart MOST ATHLETIC BEST CITIZENS MOST MODEST Helen Greene Roosevelt Lyons . Our teachers were Nlr. Harris, Mrs. Cade, and Mrs. Smith, who so carefully explained the great responsibilities that we had to take in order to reach our educational goal. By the time our sophomore year arrived we had really learned what the new life was like and what was expected of us. Due to an enrollment in- crease, Mr. Hardy joined us as an adviser. Our junior year seemed the most exciting one of all--we sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom in honor of the Class of 62. The theme of the prom was Neptune's Court. Miss I. L. Joyner and M.r. S. V. Brown, our dedicated instructors, assisted with the planning of this affair, which was, perhaps, the greatest one ever presented at Phillips. Although we gave much attention to the prom, we were also busy trying to maintain desirable academic averages. Joyce Cooper, Chaiman of a science project, won second place at the Science Fair, Mary Lyons and Helen Hines were outstanding in Debating, and James Parker was popular in the Band. At last we reached the Senior Class, much wiser and cultured than in the Freshman Class. Our eyes and minds were exploring various fields for our career choices. Mrs. E. C. Blakey and Mrs. E. T. James were very informa- tive and they advised us extremely well. It was in 1958 that the last annual was published, so we feel highly honored that our beloved principal, Mx. J. E. Batts, trusted our ability to undertake this task. Nlrs. E. H. Yates, our yearbook adviser, will be re- membered by the Phillips Family for her most excellent assistance, wholesome guidance, and the many hours spent helping us to organize and publish the 1963 BULLDOG. Our parents were of great assistance to us during our school life, and we offer endless thanks to them for having kept us in school, and for having ad- monished us to higher learning. As Sojourner Truth so wonderfully stated and I quote, I think of the great things of God, and not the little things. unquote As we review our four years of high school work, which have been pleasur- able and painful, we feel proud of our progress, however, it is not the end of our journey- -it is just the beginning. With our motto in mind, we now face the world, and the history of the Class of 1963 is placed on record. Class Historian Warren Hart 1,211 X 30 What Would Happen I .'
