i 611155 Hisfvry In August, l950, the class of 1954 made its first appearance in high school, For nearly eight years our aim was to reach this goal. Our elementary teachers must have caught a glimpse of our aims, for they mustered all their efforts to prepare us for this important step - entering high school. The great responsibility they had in teaching a group of small boys and girls to read and write and to find their way around at school was not an easy task. So to our elementary teachers a million thanks. The onewhu-ndredhuand forty six students which made up the Freshman classgcame from various schools: Phillips, Whitakers, Inborden, and Coker. -The class was divided into two sections under the supervision of Mrs. Manning and Miss Hammonds. Time passed quickly and the class discovered that it had moved one more step up the educational ladder. Mrs. Carraway became our homeroom teacher in our Sopho- more year, Many of our classmates left us. This made the number dwindle from one hundred and forty six members to eighty, Jesse Daniels was elected president of our class and B secretary. ln the beginning of our Junior year, the class suffered another loss of members by the removal of Halifax and Nash County students. They were lost because new buildings had been built for them in their communities. The class continued under the leadership of Mrs. Carraway. James Parker was elect- ed president of our class, Lesterine Battle, vice presidentg Yvonne Wade, secretaryg and Nellie Hill, II'C3Sl1I'6I', During that year our school sponsored a contest which was called A Big Hog Killing. James Par- ker, one of our classmates, was fortunate enough to be the winner of a hog. Our class also raised the highest amount of money, Consequently the Junior Class won the contest. The event that all of us looked forward to with much anticipation was the Junior-Senior Prom. This was a very gala affair and will long be remembered by those who attended. At last our senior year was reached, The fall of 1953 found us standing at the Threshold of gradu- ation from high school. The organization of the class was as follows: Odessa Young, presidentg James Parker, vice presidentg Yvonne Wade, secretary, and Nellie Hill, treasurer. An outstanding venture of the Senior class was the publishing of a Phillips High School Annual, Other activities in which the class engaged were the presentation of a Senior Class play and the prep- aration for graduation. Fond thanks to our parents and teachers for their guidance and encouragement during this period of our development. The last important high school event for this class will be the receiving of our diplomas. Yvonne Wade, Historian
