STUDENT COUNCIL HISTORY In October 1948, we decided that we should have a Student Council. Our principal, along with our faculty, was desirous of having such a noble organi- zation in our school. There were so many ways in which a Student Council could assist the principal and the faculty in the promotion of our school. We were delighted to have a part in the making of our new school. We chose as our sponsor Mrs. M.H.Carraway and Miss D.G.B. Hammonds. The four high school classes, presidents formed the nominating committee- Lena Whitaker, from the senior class: A. Vernell Boddie, from the junior class, Charlie Wills, a substitute for the president of the sophomore class, and Joyce yates, from the freshman class. The student body voted on the nominees by ballot. Our first officers were: Lorine Harris, president, A. Vernell Bod- die, Vice presidentg Bettie Williams, secretary, Rosa Lyons, assistant secre- taryg and Charles Nelson, treasurer. These officers, along with the help of our faculty and student body were able to improve our school greatly. Entering a new building we had much to do. The Student Council aided much in getting some of the needs of the school. We made payments on books for our library, on stage and office furniture, and we also helped in the purchasing of curtains and basketball suits. The Student Council happily made other im- provements in our school. At the close of the 1948-49 school year we elected our officers for the following year. Our 1949-50 officers were: A. Vernell Boddie, president, Rob- ert Scott, first vice presidentg Rosa Lyons, second vice presidentg Joyce Yat- es, third vice president: Doris Lowe, secretaryg Laurine Cotten, assistant secretary: and James Whitehead, treasurer. This year the Student Council's greatest project is the improvement of sch- olarship. We published an Honor Roll which has proved a success in promoting scholarship. We gladly saw that each teacher received a Christmas gift. Through the cooperation of the student body we are completing the balance on the stage and 0ffiCe furniture. We, the Student Council, are planning to give a scholarship to the senior with a 'C' average who is most eligible. Ie hope to make many more helpful contributions to our schoolin thefuturg, le, the Student Council of 1949-50 sincerely wish succeeding Student Councils to carry on even in a more successful way than we were able to dc.
