Kesler, who retires this year after forty years of out- standing service to Exeter. In addition to his more than twenty yeai-s of teaching of both German and EngUsh, Mr. Kesler has acted as Dean, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Faculty, and Vice Principal. From August to December in 1969, he assumed the position of acting principal, while Richard Day was recovering from illness. Perhaps the position, in which Mr. Kesler best exhibited the strength of character for which stu- dents and faculty alike have come to attribute to him, was as Dean. From 1956-1969, he worked with unflagging dedication, seeking to make the dis- ciplinary system as impartial as possible. Dean Kesler, known for his strictness, was, nevertheless, highly respected for his determination that every student be treated with equal objectivity and fair- ness. Among Mr. Kesler ' s significant achievements was his coaching of the lacrosse team, coaching of the Academy Debating team, and advising of the Student Council. A single event which typifies Mr. Kesler ' s con- cious concern for the atmosphere of the school in humorous as well as serious aspects is his annual Spring Sermon, an acount of Ockrock and his en- counter with Dick, the Almighty One, given in form analogous to a bible reading.
