The 1974 Fall Season was one of the best in Ex- eter ' s history. Every team ended with a winning record, and both Boys ' Soccer and Cross Country were undefeated. In contests with Andover, the Big Red Machine made an outstanding showing with only golf losing to the Blue. Varsity Soccer had possibly its best season ever as it went 12-0-1, tying only the Dartmouth Freshman. This undefeated re cord included victories over five college freshman teams. Under the coaching of Mr. Dennehy, the squad performed as an excellently bal- anced and cohesive unit, using their hustle and team- work to outplay better skilled teams. Perhaps the play of Captain and Most Valuable Player Dave Stymiest, fullback Keith Ausbrook, and Goalie Franco Scala- mandre best embodied the spirit and proficiency of the team. Exeter Water Polo again had a superb season with a 9-3 record. Using its superior ball skills and condi- tioning, the squad often beat its opponents, including Andover, by lopsided scores. Playing mostly college varsities, the team displayed great poise and spirit, especially when they took victories from Dartmouth and Harvard in the closing seconds. Under the lead- ership of Coach Roger Nekton, and co-captains Tom Adkins and Brad Richdale, the squad compiled a long winning streak. The season ended, however, on a disappointing note as Exeter was forced to relinquish r . . the Eastern Seaboard Championship to Montclair Academy. In spite of a seemingly mediocre 4-3 record, the football team had one of its strongest seasons in recent years. Mike Marchese, Dave Phillips, and Cap- tain Steve Slattery anchored an excellent defense, which surrendered an average of fifteen points per game. Mike Kelly, who threw seven touchdown passes over the season, and halfback Chris Egizi led a bal- anced offensive attack. Exeter suffered two dis- appointing losses to Choate and Deerfield, but ended the season in good fashion by crushing Andover, 28-7. i I I
