Appoind Prepared for college at Lower Merion High Scl Princeton, 1932; Universities: Munich. CambridiJ . School, Pomfret, Conn, . ssistant Coach of .Academy Soccer Team and Coach of . cademy Lacrosse Team. In charge of . cademy Debating Team. The 1975 Pean is dedicated to Robert W. Kesler, who retires this year after forty years of out- standing service to Exeter. In addition to his more than twenty yeai-s of teaching of both German and EngUsh, Mr. Kesler has acted as Dean, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Faculty, and Vice Principal. From August to December in 1969, he assumed the position of acting principal, while Richard Day was recovering from illness. Perhaps the position, in which Mr. Kesler best exhibited the strength of character for which stu- dents and faculty alike have come to attribute to him, was as Dean. From 1956-1969, he worked with unflagging dedication, seeking to make the dis- ciplinary system as impartial as possible. Dean Kesler, known for his strictness, was, nevertheless, highly respected for his determination that every student be treated with equal objectivity and fair- ness. Among Mr. Kesler ' s significant achievements was his coaching of the lacrosse team, coaching of the Academy Debating team, and advising of the Student Council. A single event which typifies Mr. Kesler ' s con- cious concern for the atmosphere of the school in humorous as well as serious aspects is his annual Spring Sermon, an acount of Ockrock and his en- counter with Dick, the Almighty One, given in form analogous to a bible reading. ' Sc • Soap and education are not as sudden as a massacre, but they are more deadly in the long run. - Mark Twain M ' - ' ■ The arrival of new principal, a new curriculum, and over three hundred new students gave birth to hopes for an exciting fall. But after the new P.O. combinations were memorized and the new stu- dents could tell Wentworth from Wheelwright, it became clear that no miracles would occur on campus. The Student Council amassed a volume of information on visitations and presented a propos- al, but . . . The day-off everyone craved never came, and the national economic slump caught up to Exeter. Seconds became scarce as the dining halls extensively cut back. But let ' s not leave our reader with the impression that depression pervaded the fall. The football team, in front of an Exonian crowd finite in num- ber, infinite in spirit, gave Andover a lesson on the gridiron, bringing back the first beating of the Blue in three years. Halloween converted the library into a showcase where two students vented their Holy Week frustrations in a shoot-out, while the dummy from Webster ended it all in a dramatic leap from the rafters. 10 V 1 ■V , Probalile Nor ' east to Sou ' vvest winds, varying to the southard . . . and wostard and eastard and points lietvveen; high and low barometer, sweeping round from place to place; probable areas of rain, snow, hail, and drought, suceeded or preceded by earthquakes with thunder and lightening. (New England weather, speech at dinner of New England Society, New- York, Dec. 22, 1876) - Samuel Clements 12 % 13 I Assemblies became something more than the ap- pointment you cut and got away with. Mr. Kurtz ' s quiz show, the faculty dramatic productions, and other relaxed presentations set attendance records. But assemblies did not simply provide a time for students to unwind from their second period tests. Mr. Whitney, the Academy ' s Visiting Fellow, David Burchenal, the John Phillips ' Award Winner, and a group of Lobbyists from Washington pi-esented the challenges of their particular field. When all the papers, all-nighters, and first period classes were compared with the Saturday night dances, Senior Grill, and sleeping late on Sunday, the result was a fall, refreshingly unique in its assorted events. Training is everything. The peach was once a bitter almond; cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education. - Mark Twain 15 THE CURSE ON ATREUS 16 17 FALL SPORTS ♦ ' « r 1 1 • ' it a j 20 The 1974 Fall Season was one of the best in Ex- eter ' s history. Every team ended with a winning record, and both Boys ' Soccer and Cross Country were undefeated. In contests with Andover, the Big Red Machine made an outstanding showing with only golf losing to the Blue. Varsity Soccer had possibly its best season ever as it went 12-0-1, tying only the Dartmouth Freshman. This undefeated re cord included victories over five college freshman teams. Under the coaching of Mr. Dennehy, the squad performed as an excellently bal- anced and cohesive unit, using their hustle and team- work to outplay better skilled teams. Perhaps the play of Captain and Most Valuable Player Dave Stymiest, fullback Keith Ausbrook, and Goalie Franco Scala- mandre best embodied the spirit and proficiency of the team. Exeter Water Polo again had a superb season with a 9-3 record. Using its superior ball skills and condi- tioning, the squad often beat its opponents, including Andover, by lopsided scores. Playing mostly college varsities, the team displayed great poise and spirit, especially when they took victories from Dartmouth and Harvard in the closing seconds. Under the lead- ership of Coach Roger Nekton, and co-captains Tom Adkins and Brad Richdale, the squad compiled a long winning streak. The season ended, however, on a disappointing note as Exeter was forced to relinquish r . . the Eastern Seaboard Championship to Montclair Academy. In spite of a seemingly mediocre 4-3 record, the football team had one of its strongest seasons in recent years. Mike Marchese, Dave Phillips, and Cap- tain Steve Slattery anchored an excellent defense, which surrendered an average of fifteen points per game. Mike Kelly, who threw seven touchdown passes over the season, and halfback Chris Egizi led a bal- anced offensive attack. Exeter suffered two dis- appointing losses to Choate and Deerfield, but ended the season in good fashion by crushing Andover, 28-7. i I I 23 Coach Ralph Lovshin ' s Harriers brought home the Class A New England Title after a two year absence with an undefeated season. In every prep school meet, the Red showed its depth by capturing at least seven of the top ten places. The Interschols, held at the Academy, attracted ten other schools. Although Ex- eter did not place better than fourth, they strode to an easy victory with six of the next eight places. The JV was also excellent as they won their Interschols with times that would have placed them fourth in the Varsity standings. This year ' s golf team finished with a disappointing 4-3 record. Despite the play of Captain Mike Tene- riello, the squad lost twice to Andover. Next year, Exeter golf hopes to improve its performance with the return of four iettermen. Girls soccer compiled a strong 7-1 record, the only loss being to Lawrence Academy. Ellen Black and MVP Stephanie Stringos composed Exeter ' s steady defense while Gloria Bilson, Joan Clements, and Cathy Dunbar were the outstanding forwards. Exeter finished the season on a decisive note, shutting out Andover 6-0. Field Hockey also had a winning record of 4-2-1. Consistency characterized the squad which was led by MVP Janet Kennedy, high scorer Pam Lester, and co-captains Marty Taft and Phyllis Chang. Perhaps, the highlights of this winter were varsity hockey ' s two overtime victories over Andover. Winter track had one of its best season ever with eight victories and only one loss to Harvard Frosh. The Red Raiders demolished such strong opponents as Andover and Dartmouth ' s Sub- Varsity. Individual performances by Doug Hill in the six hundred, Jimmy Warren in the sprints, and co-captain Mark Tucker in the hurdles highlighted Ralph Lovshin ' s last season as winter track coach. Hard work and phenomenal spirit brought boys ' varsity swimming from a mediocre start to their best season ever. Their 7-1 record showed only one loss to an undefeated Dartmouth J.V. Coach Roger Nekton ' s disciples also earned an unprecedented second place in the fastest Interschols ever, as two school records and all but one pool record were broken. The team can look forward to an even better season next year as only five lettermen will graduate. The girls swimming and diving team was much better this year than its 4-6 record indicates. With only six lettermen, the team ' s success depended on new students, Ann Krakora and Lisa Grater, who, along with co-captains Janet Kennedy and Martha Nance, led the team to victory in the Interschols. All but two team records were broken during the year, and all the girls showed great improvement. Varsity wrestling enjoyed a fine 7-1-1 record, the only blemish being a loss to St. Pauls. A win over Andover, and a second place finish in the Interschols highlighted the season. The outstanding wTestlers were co-captains Jim Buffington, undefeated at 115 pounds, and Jon Saxe, once beaten at 133. r vv- i '  mv s-iat ' -- - ,.- ■ , ■y ' m ' 92 r ' i f ■i . .a 93 94 95 W ' 97 A fj — R « 4c 100 Despite a mediocre first half of the season, varsity hockey rebounded with eight wins in a row to a 14-7 record. Center Dave Stymiest and wings, Peter Whiting and Chris Egizi, combined to form a spectacular first line that tallied sixty- five goals and ninety-nine assists. Other out- standing offensive threats were Chic Johnson, Dennis Hughes, and co-captain Franco Scala- mandre. Goalie Joe Tamas anchored the defense with an average of twenty-six saves per game. Charles Hamblet, in his first year as varsity basketball coach, produced a respectable 6-7 sea- son. Against college frosh, the team consistently played well and brought home victories from Tufts and Bowdoin. However, against Andover in the last game of the season, the team fell 60- 56 and thus lost its chance to give Exeter Bas- ketball its first winning season in some years. Girls basketball ended with a fairly successful 5-5 record. Cathy Dunbar led the scoring column followed closely by Julie Dunfey, Sue Hunt, and Captain Phyllis Chang. In their first season as a varsity sport, girls gymnastics won two of their six meets and placed third in the Interschols. Captain Paula Gifford led the ten girl squad to victories over Concord and Northfield, and to within one point of a victory over Andover. I Despite boys squash ' s 7-9 record, it was a successful season, since most of the defeats came at the hands of college teams. Bill Fischer was undoubtedly the most valuable player, losing only two matches during the year at the number one spot. In only its second year of existence, th e girls varsity squash team produced a poor 1-7 record, although the team did defeat Andover in the last match of the season, 5-2. Of the eleven members on varsity and J.V., only five had ever played squash before, Helen Chen led the team, playing four of the eight matches in the number one spot. 102 HOCKEY BOYS ' HOCKEY - (Top Row) Walne, manager; Mr. Osenton, coach; Hughes; Sparks; St. Goar; Tufts; Murray; Spence; Egizi; Mr. Crowe, coach; (Bottom Row) Taylor; Johnson; Dempsey; Whiting, captain; Tamas; Scalamandre, captain; Stymiest; Campisano; Mugford Ik- iter r« BOYS ' TRACK - (Top Row) Mr. Morgan, coach; Mr. Dyl es, coach; Slovenski; Winebaum; Lown; Cassidy; Hagler; Daniell; Koplik; Corell; (Middle Row) Mr. Dimmock, coach; Horton; Ryan; Samaha; Hansen; Stalker; Washington; Hall; Mr. Bruce, coach; Mr. Lovshin, coach; (Front Row) Dietrich; Hill; Kermath; Reich; Tucker, captain; Owlett, captain; Ernst; Warren; Weston; Weed BOYS ' WRESTLING - (Top Row) Mr. Seabrooke, coach; Gary; Graves; Richards; Heins; Davis, R.; Buttrey; Annis; Mr. Campbell, coach; Mr. Gallagher, coach; (Bottom Row) Kurch; Blank; Potter; Steele; Buffington, captain; Saxe, captain; Mackenzie; Buckley; Drouilhet; Cole BOYS ' SQUASH - (Top Row) Mckinnon; Healey; Cannon; Reese; Mr. Brandes, coach; (Bottom Row) Clark; Fisher, captain; Lovett; Ordway Exeter 0pp. 3 4 Boston College 5 4 Williams College 12 7 Bowdoin College 10 2 Brown and Nichols 3 6 Hansard Freshman 2 9 Brown J.V. 2 5 Matignon 7 4 Archbishop Williams 1 2 Dartmouth Freshman 6 1 St. Paul ' s 7 1 Mt. Now the campus was a frozen void, there was snow over the deep and depression hovered over the school. And God said let there be work, and there was work. God saw that it was hard, and God blessed it, saying, Let it be fruitful and multiply. And upon the second day God gathered the stu- dents from the lands of the Gnomites, and brought them unto the garden of Exeter, and they were sore afraid. And the students bowed to God and ser ' ed him through their work. And holy week came and the students called to God for inspiration for passing tests and strength for surviving all- nighters. But the students praised the God of No- Doz, and God, in his anger flung down trials of calculus, history and Latin. So the students made offerings to their God. The Dramatites performed David and Lisa, the Main Streetites presented a melodrama, and the Wheelwrightites brought forth offerings of pleasure. God looked down and was pleased, for they were good. And on the third day God created vacation and God, it was a good. But the forth day arrived and once again God summoned the students from the land of Gnomites. And God vented his wrath, for someone had plucked two speakers of stereo, and he brought forth inches of snow, blankets of clouds and days of cold. And on the fifth day God created routine and the students fell into it and pleased God by their ar- duous sacrifices of hours at desks of turmoil. And the students labored and God was pleased. And in his splendor he brought forth the prophet Dick Gregory, Congressman Cohen and Governor Carter of the Georgiatites who spoke of climbing the tree of knowledge to gain the fruit of truth. And upon the sixth day, God created great trials to test the loyalty to work of the students. And he unleashed another holy week, and the students grovelled to God, and constructed an arc of prepara- tion and survived the flood of assigned papers and texts. And God looked down and said let the eight- eenth be a day of rest and the students obeyed God and did not work that day. And God tested the team of hockey by calming the zamboni. But the team of hockey met the challenge by scraping the ice as the teams of opponents who worshipped heathen Gods looked on. And the teams of oppo- nents were vanquished. And one day it came to pass that the team of Andover came forth, bringing with them the sinners of the south. But the army of Buster and Franco rose up and smote the Andies and the Andies whimpered and returned to their camp. 110 And upon the seventh day the students cele- brated their coming unto the promised land of understanding. The House of Bancroft opened forth its doors to the Soulites, Websterites, Lang- dellites and other male tribes. And God smiled upon them for he saw the glory of his work, for indeed it had been a holy day. And it came to pass that Zamcheck entered the garden of Exeter and rocked the foundations of the gymnasium. And the stu- dents arose and boogied for their God. And the Dramatites again displayed their wonder with Two Gentleman of Verona. And God loved the first seven days so much that he decided to have an eighth. But the students rose against God and stepped upon the busses of Mich- aud and returned unto the lands of Gnomites, and thus ended the Gospel of Winter, prelude to the Psalm of Spring.
