MEMOIRS OF THE CLASS OF 'l95'l Flrst of all let s get one thlng out of the way We are the Class of l95l Turn back a page and you can see us We are a rather motley looking crew but then who wouldn t look motley after what we ve been through? You can tell the four year boys pretty easlly They are the smug looklng ones mugglng at the camera and looking generally pretty sllly They looked pretty sally four years ago too but they were not so smug then We all gathered from the far corners of tember l947 lt must have been early September as a matter of fact because It was too hot even to thunk of school We were smaller we were bewuldered we trudged over from the station and all that rot All In all It was not too auspicious a start for a class destuned for greatness such as ours lDont laugh After all we dld beat Andover J Harold Stassen started off the Fall Term by speaking In a specual cha pel but l am afrand that most of us were too eager to wrlte home and tell our parents that we had seen hum to pay much attention to what he sand As a matter of fact he dldn t say much anyhow Nobody dld much of anythlng In the way of athletucs that year although there were some very good light club teams HVC VENITE PVERI VT VlRl SITIS nm Ili I 2 VOTEU X 'L 4 Q rx TQilSCQlNTEl.l.l N Once they even beat Emerson rn football The varslty beat Andover that year l2 6 chrefly because Bob Blank decuded that Ex eter was as good a place as any to spend the Fall We took careful notice of thus vlctory and decided that nt was a good Idea although none of the other classes here wuth us ever dud catch on There were some pretty dandy fires that year and a rumor of an impending water shortage led to an unexplained mcrease In the rate of consumptlon of water that IS Nothing much came of thus and the Fall Term slobbered merruly along Over the Wnnter vacation Look wrote an artlcle on Exeter Hah' As a matter of fact a couple members of our class gamed some notoriety by havmg thenr plc tures publushed ID this radlcal perloducal In case anybody happens to remember t snowed now and then that Wunter lt was also cold Perhaps It would be better to forget that term Anyhow the Sprung Term was really spicy and a lot more In terestnng Ask any parking meter The really great event of that term was the not or whatever It was of Sunday Aprul 20 To tell the truth nobody rn the Class of 5l had much to do wlth rt because we were forced to remam In our dorms but rn ten years or so we can all clarm that It - l l ' v I R ' - . - lf F F ' it . qswml lx 64? 4 lull L,- Q.. was our own udea to roll cannonballs down Front Street Yes sur the school had oru gunaluty un those days Of course ut dudn t have movues or a Sprung Dance after that luttle orgy but ut dud have orugunaluty There was also the Nuck Scatellu epusode Thus was almost as good as the ruot because people got all excuted about ut and saud t would dusgrace the school uf we nomunated hum un the mock Presudentual conventuon A few Senuors got very dusturbed and trued to get all of us to vote for Vandenburg or someone sully luke that but the strauns of Cool Water proved too much Scatellu won and the school was dusgraced I thus term the faculty also unutuated the work program so that they could save money to buy some more Swuss Chard for supper lt has been a great success What a dufference three months made un our class None of us have ever been as smart as we were the furst few days of our Lower year That us what everyone tells us anyhow and sunce the Lower year us supposed to be the one of blase sophustuca tuon well go along wuth the gag for w nt of a better one O We had to persecute the new prep class because most of us stull looked luke preps and ut would have been possuble for some embarrassung mustakes to be made Davud Copperfueld and Phy Scu I provuded our luves wuth a purpose and all our dreams seemed about to be answered when somebody on the faculty actually read a petutuon for a longer Thanksguvung holuday and ut looked as uf we mught have a chance It was a pretty good try anyhow Many of us managed to make V teams that year and a couple of rungers even wheezed theur way onto Varsuty teams but mostly the heavy clubs felt the benefut of our growung mught Our Varsuty teams proved throughout the year that they were fune losers They certaunly had ample op portunuty lt was un that year that Irma s replaced the Crull as the home of Saturday nught ban quets though nobody ever dud fugure out where those blacklusted gurls were that the ductuonary us always talkung about Out sude of eatung and smokung nobody dud much and after what happened the year before maybe ut was just as well Our Upper year was a uolly one too There was a nufty Fall Dance that the Com approach so they cut ut tuoned the faculty agaun guvung Fatua constantua out We petu about Thanks larva anumorum parvorum est lNot that you all wouldn t know ut anyhow but larva means hobgob Our Upper year was the one un whuch cynucusm ceased to be a socual problem Fostered by certaun elements un the Hoyt butt room ut rapudly developed unto an art Thus accompanued the tured gone through hell look whuch was about the best excuse around for not studyung There were many opportunutues for fun that year If one dud not enuoy humself un Englush there was al ways Math If one dudnt get you the other dud Not that the courses are overly hard quute a few boys managed to pass both of them ln case anybody has forgotten where he luved that year he would probably do best to start searchung on the north sude of the campus sunce practucally everybody flocked un that durectuon A few hardy souls shunned the Camp of the Phullustunes but . .I I l --'-Tl, F ' . - S.
