Norton Payson The Exonian HE Exouian, founded in the spring of 1878 by three undergraduates, Balch, Mariett, and Needles, has the distinction of being the oldest preparatory school paper in the country At first it consist- ed chiefly of poems, editorials, and cartoons collected by the editors. After about ten years, however, the paper began to broaden its field, printing up-to-date and interesting news dealing solely with the Academy. This policy has been followed more or less strictly since that time. During the past few years, however, The Exonian has contained interesting news, from time to time, of colleges and of Andover, as well as information about prominent alumni. This addition has been accepted with en- thusiasm by the student body. One of the main features of the paper this year were the editorials, deal- ing with various subjects worthy of discussion. It was largely through the efforts of The Exonian that the school was granted another day during the Christmas vacation. The communications, if not as numerous as in former years, created great interest. They were well-written and expressed the senti- ments of the school. This column devoted to communications is one of the chief merits of the paper because it urges the student to express his own opinions on school matters. The Exouitm this year has been particularly successful, and the PEAN wishes to take this opportunity to congratulate the members of the Exanian board who, in spite of ditiiculties, so well completed their work.
