To Norman Lowrie Hatch an instructor most highly approved who, while evincing skill in many things, evinces it most fully in his grasp of the Latin language, his pupils, well remembering this, dedicate this book. The hearts of such as remember, lodge a store of gratitude for good offices done them in the past. All who come here for instruction find in him a most energetic guide to direct them as they enter upon this course of study. The very principle which he laid down for himself early in life is the one which, now a liberally educated man, he zealously enjoins upon others: each one of those under his instruction is to see to it that he let no day pass without adding something to his store of knowledge whereby he may make progress towards culture as his goal. Towards the achievement of this end whatever the master can con- tribute by way of sound advice, or a word of encouragement, or by timely aidg whatever he can eifect by virtue of the art of exposi- tion, skill in which enables him to know how to simplify very many things that in themselves are exceedingly diliicult,-all this he generously oifers and extends to them individually. It is not at all surprising, then, that today aH who are capable of forming some estimate of ability are agreed that he is splendidly serving the interests of the Academy.
