PAST. PRESENT AND FUTURE f f You expect me to write something fit for the PEAN ' ' And that means, of course, an effort supreme, For the wheels in my head turn in traffic and . dicker- I Which doubtless tends to' make it grow thicker. Yet some times I see things, I think quite a few Obscured to the men who have too close a view, - , Whose shoulders are burdened with problems far greater Than noting all bluffs in our dear Alma Mater. But why all this joking, complaining and croaking? ' I ,suppose you will say 'tis from habit of , soaking. Be that as it may, I acknowledge the share Of blessings received from ' her jmotherly care, And hope I'll be able, though humble my sta- tion,' ' To add in some way to your real education. This river of youths I have watched come and go For many a year, with its ceaseless flow. Yet it seems not the same, this current of men That hurry away just as those did then. , Let memory turn back o'er the pages of time And recall just a few whose names brightly shine, 'Twas then that Jim Hogan proved quite the right slogan To so fight 'gainst the Blue. that defeats we scarce knewg And Bigelow was there to write verses fair Of the beautiful scene made by elm tree and green. Rushing down the back field like a red streak of fire, I see Rockwell the brave who seemed never to tireg A ' And Hooper at center, who stood like a rock, With jim Cooney at guard to help take the shock. V In class there was Rand-to mention a shark, A And Johnny McMann, Mr. Tufts' special mark, Tho' no one escaped in those days more than now, 4 And though cut to the quick, we enjoyed it somehow. ' There were many bright stars, one was poor Eddie Heim. How well I remember the very last time He stood at the bat when Exeter's fate Hung in the balance of last man at the plate. The bases were full, if my memory is good, Andover ahead, and two out-there he stood. One strike, then 't was two-but at last what . a whack! That sphere shot away, but a fielder ran back Andcaught in one hand, while we all had a E s ell Seeidgg Andover shout, dance, holler and yell. Fully five thousand youths I have seen come and go, And a pretty good share I've been privileged to know, I sold them their goods and bought them again, At first they were boys, at the last they were men. Where money's atstake, weak character bends, So it's worth while to notice, both parted good friends. So may it continue from now to the end,' As we sell to these boys and buy of these men. RALPH E.
