PREFACE. 'l' is the wish and the intention of the editors to make the PICAN not a col- lection of witticisms, but a book of records, which may be constantly referred to, in regard to all occurrences of past years. With this end in view, we have been especially careful as to the accuracy of our statements, regarding all other matters as secondary in importance, and as a diversion from statistics. While accuracy has been our chief aim, we have not been unmindful of the general appearance of the book, and have been somewhat particular in regard to all illustrations. In examining the annuals of other schools, we have observed that the greater part are filled with drawings more or less skillfully copied from the works of better artists. Realizing that if a book contains even one only of these copies, it leads to the impression that the entire book has been plagiarized, we have tried to exclude all such drawings, and we have succeeded in doing so, to the extent of our knowledge. . Our third consideration has been to make the PICAN as amusing as would be consistent in a book of records, and for this reason we have included a certain amount of ridicule, more or less deserved by those who have received it. In this it has been our endeavor to refrain from all too personal and malicious comments, and we trust that any fellow, whom we have criticised, will take our criticism in good feeling, and if, perchance, it seem at all just, he might take care that there be no need for a repetition. We wish to thank especially Principal G. N. Cross of the Robinson Seminary, every member of the Academy Faculty, and of the school, for valuable assist- ance and support. 6
