HISTORY OF- NINETY-EIGHT. Who fears to speak of Ninety-Eight, Who blushes at her name? HEN, on September twelfth, in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and ninety-four, a small band of Preps. appeared before the-' school at the first chapel exercise, it was easily seen that something was going to hap- pen. And happen it did. In athletics, size, and scholarship, Ninety-Eight has always been in the lead. With an amazing precocity she tied with Ninety-Six for the foot-ball championship, and gave her a good rub for the base-ball cham- pionship. Of course, children should be seen and not heard, so Ninety-Eight did hold back a little, and gave the others some chance at first. As juniors, which is now Lower Middlers, though the class decreased somewhat in num- bers, it won both the winter and the spring athletic games, the class drill trophy, and had the greatest number of men on the honor list. What a struggle came in the Upper Middle year! The largest class in school, Ninety-Eight was bitterly fought by both Ninety-Seven and Ninety-Nine. It was a line illus- tration of how little curs bark and bite at the big dogs who take no notice of them. Letting Ninety-Seven tie her for the foot-ball championship by a fluke, Ninety-Eight then went ahead and won the Faculty Shield meet, the Spring track games, the base-ball championship, headed the honor list as before, and gained for herself a name for honesty and fairness never before equalled in the history of the school. The Senior year is too fresh in our minds to need mention. You all know how we won the Faculty Shield again, and how again the class has held up its good name and that of the school. Ninety-Eight holds nine school records, more than the other three classes, and is equally in the lead in other things. Much will she be missed next year, but, with Nineteen Hundred holding the most important position in school, things will be in a fair condition. May you, O spirit of Ninety-Eight, go forth and make yourself manifest and felt in that large place, the world, even as you have in this small corner of it, ever remembering this school of Exeter which has nurtured and developed you so well. 29
