'l' is the wish and the intention of the editors to make the PICAN not a col- lection of witticisms, but a book of records, which may be constantly referred to, in regard to all occurrences of past years. With this end in view, we have been especially careful as to the accuracy of our statements, regarding all other matters as secondary in importance, and as a diversion from statistics. While accuracy has been our chief aim, we have not been unmindful of the general appearance of the book, and have been somewhat particular in regard to all illustrations. In examining the annuals of other schools, we have observed that the greater part are filled with drawings more or less skillfully copied from the works of better artists. Realizing that if a book contains even one only of these copies, it leads to the impression that the entire book has been plagiarized, we have tried to exclude all such drawings, and we have succeeded in doing so, to the extent of our knowledge. . Our third consideration has been to make the PICAN as amusing as would be consistent in a book of records, and for this reason we have included a certain amount of ridicule, more or less deserved by those who have received it. In this it has been our endeavor to refrain from all too personal and malicious comments, and we trust that any fellow, whom we have criticised, will take our criticism in good feeling, and if, perchance, it seem at all just, he might take care that there be no need for a repetition. We wish to thank especially Principal G. N. Cross of the Robinson Seminary, every member of the Academy Faculty, and of the school, for valuable assist- ance and support. 6 PRELUDE. Fair morning brings its blessed light, And joyfully the Day ' Obscures the stars with sunshine bright And hides the moon away. g With hope and promise of success, With high resolve to win, With each one full of happiness, The Day we all begin. 7 'L . RADBURY LONGFELLOW CILLEY, A. M., was born in Nottingham, N. H., on the sixth of September, 1838. In 1842 the family removed to Exeter, where, in the autumn of 1851, he entered The Phillips Exeter Acade- my, which he left in 1855 to enter the Sophomore Class of Harvard College. He was graduated from Harvard with very high honors in 1858, when he was appointed an instructor in the Albany Academy, Albany, N. Y. In December, 1858, he was chosen professor of ancient languages in Phillips Exeter, and he entered upon his new duties in February, 1859. For over forty years, ff Brad, as we all know him, has taught in this school which he loves so well. Linked as he is to those who have made Phillips Exeter so famous, he is now active in the work which is raising the school to a still greater height of excellence and fame. We trust that to his forty years of service may be joined many more, and that his fondest hopes for Phillips Exeter may be fully realized, while he is yet in a position to enjoy the so well deserved results of his loving labor. Who fears to speak of Ninety-Eight, Who blushes at her name? HEN, on September twelfth, in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and ninety-four, a small band of Preps. appeared before the-' school at the first chapel exercise, it was easily seen that something was going to hap- pen. And happen it did. In athletics, size, and scholarship, Ninety-Eight has always been in the lead. With an amazing precocity she tied with Ninety-Six for the foot-ball championship, and gave her a good rub for the base-ball cham- pionship. Of course, children should be seen and not heard, so Ninety-Eight did hold back a little, and gave the others some chance at first. As juniors, which is now Lower Middlers, though the class decreased somewhat in num- bers, it won both the winter and the spring athletic games, the class drill trophy, and had the greatest number of men on the honor list. What a struggle came in the Upper Middle year! The largest class in school, Ninety-Eight was bitterly fought by both Ninety-Seven and Ninety-Nine. It was a line illus- tration of how little curs bark and bite at the big dogs who take no notice of them. Letting Ninety-Seven tie her for the foot-ball championship by a fluke, Ninety-Eight then went ahead and won the Faculty Shield meet, the Spring track games, the base-ball championship, headed the honor list as before, and gained for herself a name for honesty and fairness never before equalled in the history of the school. The Senior year is too fresh in our minds to need mention. You all know how we won the Faculty Shield again, and how again the class has held up its good name and that of the school. Ninety-Eight holds nine school records, more than the other three classes, and is equally in the lead in other things. Much will she be missed next year, but, with Nineteen Hundred holding the most important position in school, things will be in a fair condition. May you, O spirit of Ninety-Eight, go forth and make yourself manifest and felt in that large place, the world, even as you have in this small corner of it, ever remembering this school of Exeter which has nurtured and developed you so well. 29 SENIOR CLASS LIST. LcAv:f11 HIC sentiments which must have predominated in this class, and ruled its actions, seem, judging from its past, best illustrated by the above motto. They have ever been a spirited class, but their inspiration came not from the Gods above. It seems to have come rather from the grain fields, or the foul depths of the lower powers. Only by the external facts are they brought to our notice, and these go to prove our deep-seated opinion. When these facts are reviewed, they reveal at first lofty ambitions, far from noble, which are apparently encouraged by an enormous amount of self-satisfaction. Self-satisfaction for what! Why, defeats, for secondly we see nothing else. In all contests except one, in all trials in which quality was tested, they met defeat, and even defeated themselves. As a natural result of the above-noted inspiration, they have always been a talkative class. In this respect, at least, they have succeeded, for no other class, within the memory of man, has ever equalled them. This class of Ninety-Nine can even talk, when there is nothing to talk about, they can keep up, what they call an argument, when all others have been convinced of their mistakes. Conclusions of honest men must be that they lack the quality of seeing a point, and of profiting by their own mistakes. Yet, after all, in this strange class, there are many good fellows, who have, as it seems, been unduly influenced by the few. These few have, by their diplo- matic insight, presided over meetings, and ruled supreme, the bad element has overawed the good, the good element has shown its weakness, by allowing what it has known to be inconsistent with the welfare of the class, and with the feeling of the school. This fault, however, is the weakness of many mortals. Few have the courage to stand out against the opposition of the world, even when they realize that their cause is right, and that the world struggles against the cause simply because of its novelty. It would be well for this class to remember the maxim :- The Brave are Successfulu- keeping in mind that 33 the bravery referred to is not that bluff bravery of the few, whom we have mentioned, but that it is that bravery of which every true man has a distinct image within himself. One more detrimental quality, and a fundamental principle of their platform, is that of always doing what they know is wrong. Considering their good side, for everything bad has some redeeming feature, we note some hidden sparks of uprightness, yet these are so small as to warrant mention only. As a parting word of advice, we suggest that they let these sparks kindle, until the class is thoroughly enflamed with such zeal, as shall lead it to be remembered, as a class which struggled against self to victory, as a class of which people may say : The school is better for its influence. 4555 '- -,ff Xf 4 ? -. it I - -.. vu Y - : nu Q5 34 UPPER MIDDLE CLASS Allison, Charles Edward, Bailey, William Thomas, J Baker, Frank Milton, . . Since the registration of the first member of that class there has been a new spirit evident in the school. Before any athletic contest in which Nineteen Hundred was to take part a strange kind of mystery has pervaded the air. Chub goes around with a wise look on his face, excited and puffing as if he had run all the way to Abbot Hall from Peabody. The class has always worked hard for what it got, and it truly deserves every championship which it has Qonej. It has also worked hard for a good many things which it did not get. But that is not history. The class did not distinguish itself in foot-ball in its first year, nor, in fact, in much of anything but posters and self government. With surprising regard for the fitness of things, lg'7'L'L'l1 and white were early chosen class colors. The only fault to be found with these colors is that when a member of the class is wear- ing them they are not easily distinguishable from the background. One thing we had forgotten. The members of the class of Nineteen Hundred, not satis- fied with self evident facts, labelled themselves in every possible way with the class numerals. We all knew they were Preps. Why make a painful fact more prominent? Everything, class foot-ball team, class base-ball team, class track team, fwhoever heard of such thing?j class drill squad, was labelled 'oo. Of course they were nothing, but why a double nothing? And their own doings too? Truthful children. They shall have their reward. Who said in Heaven? Nay, preserve us l This year Nineteen Hundred scored its first triumph. The class won the foot-ball championship. For this they had duly large heads. They went down fthe heads we meanj when the Faculty Shield meet came off. Nineteen Hundred, who beat both Ninety-Nine and Ninety-Seven QGod bless themj last year, had to be satisfied with the third place. Cheer up, Nineteen Hundred. Your turn will come. When Ninety-Eight is gone you will rise supreme. You show great promise, and with those gone whose attainments are' greater than yours you will blossom out in all your glory. 37 Class of 1900. ICLYING on their parents' fond wishes for their future success, but above all trusting in the idea of their own importance, they have come to us. Alas, only to learn of their insignificance l What a woe-begone lot of youngsters the fond mother has brought forth. We trust they may under her fostering care grow into that manliness which characterizes our upper class men and becomes students of lixeter. Our leisure moments have been joyfully spent, yet with toil, in our endeavors to lay the foundation of your characters, to administer the rebukes, and to teach the lessons which had to be taught. You have been sorely tried and tempted, but so have we. Your trials were for your advantage, but ours to our detriment because of your association. You have passed through a year of lixeter life with all its varied interests. It may have been an unpleasant and hard one, but we hope you have pro- gressed in the right direction. We 'hope you have taken your defeats in the spirit which leads to future victoriesg that you have accepted your reproofs as dutiful children. As a parting word we advise you ever to cling to those principles of loyalty, honor, and manliness, which we have endeavored to teach you. 41 Class of 1901 Y V Anderson, George NX oodbury, Boyle, St. john, jr., . . . E ---q fV:3 i 1 1 W 4 HE Golden Branch is practically the outgrowth of the Societas Rhetorical, which was founded by twenty-one students in 1812 for the purpose of attaining a certain degree of proficiency in speaking. The literary exercises at each meeting consisted solely of declamations, one declamation being exact- ed from each member. The Societas Rhetorical was temporarily suspended in x8r8, but later was revived under the name of The Golden Branch. The members, at this time, were bound together by sacred bonds of allegiance, for the society was of the secret order. It had been organized for the cultivation of a virtuous, sacred friendship, as well as for literary culture. This seclusiveness died out after a time, and the society has now become one which all men, who desire, may enter, provided they be of a good moral character and display zeal in its purposes. The history of The Golden Branch is such that the members look back upon the eighty years of its existence with feelings of pride. And well they may, for its record has been an honorable one. In its halls many eminent men of our country, in the past as in the present, learned the rudiments of argumenta- tion and acquired the ability to speak with facility. The rooms of the Golden Branch are neatly equipped. A library of 3,000 volumes adorns the shelves. Some of these are very old and have thereby in- creased their value inestimably. The meetings, which are held fortnightly, are open to all who care to attend. 56 Fall Term, Winter 'l'crm, . Spring Term, . Fall Term, NVinter Term, . Spring Term, . R. C. BRUVE. j. A. GIRSON. j. L. Soule Literary Society is in the seventeenth year of its exist- ence. Founded October 26, 1881, by forty-six students, it has con- tinued with but one interruption up to the present time. The society consti- tution was drawn up by F. H. Cunningham, Thomas Hunt, jr., and H. W. Ninde. The society has always offered excellent advantages and opportunities, and has been of great benefit to those actively engaged in its duties, as is shown by their literary work in the Academy and in college. It has been the endeavor of the G. L. Soule to maintain a high standard of work, and throughout the society's history conscientious and excellent work has gained the cherished aim. The society, though it is non-social in its elections to membership, preferring earnest endeavor to social merit, has, nevertheless, been a centre for much social pleasure, as well as serious work among its members. The custom of having a Ladies' Night was revived this year, and a re- markably successful evening was had. The society, by its challenge to the Golden Branch, introduced what is hoped will be for the future an annual occurrence, a joint debate between the two societies. ' 58 I oFF1cERs. 1'l'es1'u?f1zl. Brnckelt The Dramatic Club. 95 THE DRAIVIATIC CLUB. NIC of the many marks of the progress of the Academy during the past year is the organization of a dramatic club. There has been no dramatic club, or serious attempt at dramatic productions in the school, since the Thalia Club was organized in 1894. The success of the new club has been encouraging, and the organization will undoubtedly continue as a permanent institution. Of course, as is shown by the history of the Thalia Club, such an organization varies greatly in respect to its talent from year to year, and so needs the heartiest co-operation and sup- port of the student-body, that the club may permanently exist. i Eleven students signed the petition for the privilege of forming the club, and among these were those who participated in the production of the German play, Dia flurhzc1'Lvre11vc. Under the skilful-management of the officers and the faculty members of the club, it has grown, until at present twenty-one members are enrolled. The organization has shown itself one of no mean merit, and capable of at- tempting rather difticult productions. Early in the year a German comedy, Die I1aclzzn'!.vrc1'sc, was produced. I .ater, two one-act comedies, The Wolfu flhkcr ry' Crcmomz and 110 U71f!c'.v I Wil, were presented successfully. In the spring term the club presented, under the supervision of a skilful director, the Srhaaffur Smnrzizd and proved itself a valuable addition to the Academy. 96 THE DRAMATIC CLUB. E, M , ROGERS- Io9 THE ROBINSOISI SEMINARY. T is hardly just that in a work of this kind, something at least should not be said of our neighboring school, -the Seminary, for, as everyone knows, this Seminary enters largely into the life of the Academy student in one way or an- other, or else the Academy student enters into the life of the Seminary girl. In fact, there are few whom it does not affect. Let one watch the Academy student some pleasant afternoon about 4.30 v. M., and he will notice how the student's attention is attracted toward Front Street, how he watches the young children coming from the Seminary, and ponders in his mind what sort of a girl this or that child will make. Even the grind may be made to smile by the school-children's antics, and so turn to his work with renewed zeal. He is caused even by the school-girl to remember the words of Scott: O! woman in our hours of ease, etc. From another view-point, what does the young lady think? Surely, judging from her actions, she does not think. Yet they are seen in their halls, gathered IIO 1 in groups, discussing this or that student. Some laughing at the embarrassed young gentleman, who is being shown through the Seminary building, some preparing to be ready with their best appearance when he shall return, some cry- ing, because, if there should be war, --- would have to go, some fondly show- ing an Academy Senior's class-pin, the one cherished object of the Seminary girl. The above is said to be an exact account, as print- ed in Thr S1'mz'11r11'1'fz11, a publication of the Semi- nary. A redeeming feature of the Seminary is its grounds. As they are large and well wooded, they furnish suit- able places for picnics and moonlight excursions on a beautiful little lake. P After all we cannot help being happy because we have the Seminary girl, with her surroundings, and can- not help feeling thankful for the foresight john Phil- lips showed when he per- ceived that there would he a Seminary here, and so selected ldxeter as a site for the Academy. 6 CHURCH AND CHAPEL MONITORS. M o 3 fTranslation from an :incicnt Latin manuscript, found buried four hundred feet below the surface at Andover, Massj fln'fl'd1l'll.i'.'--I1Ct us meditate upon our oaten reed a muse of Mars, when the youth of lixonia and Phillipia, contending the prize, met in doubtful strife, at which song the lynxes stand amazed and the rivers change their course. .72-4l'1'll.t' .- Ixmjw. flIc!1'6fz'1r.v.--'l'he day expected had arrived, and the horses of Phaeton now led up the twelfth morning at the first dawn, and Aurora has dispelled the humid shade from the pole. But a tempest, turbid with snow, and most black with frequent hail, rushes through the whole sky, and the Cazzzjuzx from above is filled. The boyish troop, shoving with their shoulders, in strife strike the snow, just as when ants, mindful of winter, plunder' a great heap of corn, and lay it in their roof, and the black troop moves over the whole Cazzzjufx. Part collect the bands and chastise the slow, the whole path seethes with the work. But when Titan, borne in his cerulean chariot, holds the middle course, the omnipotent Father has dispersed the collected clouds, and led back the sun. Forthwith, upon the tawny sand two leaders wander about 5 twice five boys following each shine in divided band, whom, going, all the youth of Exonia and Phillipia admiring shout. The contest having been begun, they intermingle hands with hands and provoke the contest, the Iflxonian youth assemble their strength and conscious courage, and, burning, they drive the youth opposing through the whole plain, now with art they wander over, now these, now those 132 approaches, nor is there delay nor restg a sickly panting shakes the vast joints. The Phillipian youth press on with vain strife, not otherwise than as when the turbid tide with frequent clamor strikes the hard flint in vain, and raises aloft the humid dew to the ethereal stars. The omnipotent Father interposes a delay, and makes an end to the contest ended. Now for a long time the youth of Phillipia have commemorated that the time having been longer they would have crossed the line with equal beaks, and left the contest doubtful. Sic scllzpcr 1u'rz'z'.
