T is especially appropriate that we chronicle the life of George Albert Wentworth in this volume, which commemorates the depart- ure from Phillips Exeter of the class whose leave-taking is contem- poraneous with that of its most noted instructor. George Albert Wentworth, A.M., was born at Wakefield, N.H., and he received his early instruction in the district school of that town. Mr. Wentworth entered the Junior Class of Phillips lixeter Academy in the fall of 1852, and remained through his Senior year. In 1855 he entered the Sophomore Class of Harvard College, and was graduated with high honors in 1858. Before his graduation, Mr. Wentworth was elected to the position of Instructor of Ancient Languages in the Academy, in which capacity he served for one year. He then assumed the Profes- sorship of Mathematics, and held that position until his resignation, which took elfect in june, 1892. Although he received tempting offers to occupy nominally higher positions, yet his love for Phillips Exeter held him bound at the hearthstone of the fortunate institution to which he devoted a large part of his life's work. The handsome gymnasium and finely equipped laboratories will long remain as reminders of his untiring devotednessg for it was largely due to his instrumentality that the edifices were con- structed. Professor Wentworth is probably best known throughout the C99
