CC IRST you want to know what it is and why it is, and perhaps we may as well explain. The PEAN is the catalogue from the students' standpoint. The Faculty publishes a catalogue, dwelling longingly and lovingly on the points which it deems most importantg and, while we do not wish to have it understood that our studies are of secondary consideration, yet there are other things that occupy our leisure hours, and they, too, should be represented. Some may expect of us a production rivalling LW in illustration and satire, these are doomed to disappointment, and those who have constantly dis- couraged us we hope will find a pleasant surprise. To those who have supported us we extend our thanks, and we hope to have assured them that their confidence has not been misplaced. T is especially appropriate that we chronicle the life of George Albert Wentworth in this volume, which commemorates the depart- ure from Phillips Exeter of the class whose leave-taking is contem- poraneous with that of its most noted instructor. George Albert Wentworth, A.M., was born at Wakefield, N.H., and he received his early instruction in the district school of that town. Mr. Wentworth entered the Junior Class of Phillips lixeter Academy in the fall of 1852, and remained through his Senior year. In 1855 he entered the Sophomore Class of Harvard College, and was graduated with high honors in 1858. Before his graduation, Mr. Wentworth was elected to the position of Instructor of Ancient Languages in the Academy, in which capacity he served for one year. He then assumed the Profes- sorship of Mathematics, and held that position until his resignation, which took elfect in june, 1892. Although he received tempting offers to occupy nominally higher positions, yet his love for Phillips Exeter held him bound at the hearthstone of the fortunate institution to which he devoted a large part of his life's work. The handsome gymnasium and finely equipped laboratories will long remain as reminders of his untiring devotednessg for it was largely due to his instrumentality that the edifices were con- structed. Professor Wentworth is probably best known throughout the C99 country as an author of mathematical works, and, as such, is ranked among the highest. His memory will be longest cherished by those who were in the Academy during his terms as acting Principal after the resignation of Dr. Perkins, and also of Dr. Scott. Although these periods were marked by the severity of the discipline, yet among the students there was always the most profound respect for him, and a feeling of confi- dence that justice was being enacted. ' It was with a feeling of deepest regret that we learned of the resignation of so popular a professor. After a third of a century's close connection with Phillips Exeter Academy it seemed almost im- possible to spare Mr. Wentworth for the absence of a year, which he has been spending abroad: with how much deeper a feeling of sorrow are we brought to realize that his familiar face will no longer be seen in the class-room. Ninety-two may well count herself 'fortunate that his period of service in the Academy did not end before hers. U05 The ClaSS of '92. COLORS: Blark and Wl11'fi'. CHEER: Hulla-baloo, Hulla-baloo, Exeiur, Exrlfr, '92. is HE duty of singing the PEAN now devolves upon us, and it is with great joy that we enter upon the task of writing our class his- tory. We are allowed a reply to the courteous mention of us in Volume VIII., andalso the privilege of vaunting ourselves in the apparel of Seniors. As has been said, ft It is something, after all, to be a Senior, but our satisfaction is not in being able to show our plumage--it is in our right to speak proudly of the admirable record of our class, which has been maintained throughout four years, as the result of the earnest efforts of our fellows. A highly commendable record of scholarship has always character- ized the class, and in athletics and social matters the valuable assist- ance and the influence of '92 have been acknowledged. But how unfortunate are we in not being allowed more victories over Andover! Our misfortune is too humiliating to mention. We must, however, still undergo humiliation, so we are like Washington, calm in defeat, and never elated in victory. In the football and baseball teams our class has been wellvrepresented, and in other athletics she has not been excelled by any of her associated classes. We were as surprised as we were delighted, when, in the winter C113 meeting of our preparatory year, we won the tug-of-war. Think of preps having the four strongest men! This we again won in the following year, and we probably should have won it yet again had not that contest been excluded from our list of events, and finally abolished. We have been successful in the other tournaments of our course, always taking our quota of prizes. One thing truly remarkable is, that many of those prominent in school interests, society and music especially, were our classmates, but they have nearly all left us, still their influence has been felt during their absence. The class now seems to be purged of all its unworthy members, and our excellent Principal and Faculty are full of hope, and assurance of the future success of the generation which intends soon to bid adieu to old Phillips Exeter. We wish her many anniversaries in prosperity, and, like children about to fare abroad, with our minds stored with the precepts of our parent and the hope of honoring her alway, we wave our good-by as we enter the larger sphere of our education. fI2D Senior CIQISS Statistics. EPT EMBICR ninth, eighteen hundred and eighty-nine, was a dark, gloomy day, and the local forecasters in the town of Exeter predicted a disastrous storm. This storm was of an unprece- dented nature, worse than a cloud-burst,-for damage from such a source lasts for a comparatively short timeg but this gathering from all parts of the country was doomed to the fated little County of Rockingham. It raged all that memorable day, and when it cleared, specks of personified freshness were noticed moving about our' dignified little town, chattering like monkeys let out of a box, and generally disturbing the peace. Horrible to relate, we found that they had come to stay, and this fact was engraved on our minds never to be erased. This was the new Prep. class, and as such was bound to make itself known. They were to do wonders, the little fellowsg but when anything was to be done, the absence of these miniature giants was conspicuous. Thus their first year in Phillips Exeter passed, and their remarkable feats ended in talk, but we have forgotten to mention that in the Indoor Meeting of '90 they took two first prizes and two second. In their junior year they put a class football team into the field destined 'to win for them the class championship, greatly to their own C205 Lux Eng.C0-. Bodm lm. detriment and to the delight of the local hatters, whose sales in the next two days amounted to nearly one hundred hats. This vain little rooster crowed very much over the class victory, which was very easily accounted for by the fact that the upper classes furnished the material for the Academy eleven, and, besides, put class teams into the Held that gave them a pretty hard push. This victory was all that they cared for, and when the baseball season arrived, '93 sat on the grand stancl with a very serene and self-satisfied look. In this their middle year, ,93 has taken more of a brace. On the football team they were represented by two men, and in the Indoor Meeting they were second only to '92,-taking five first prizes and four seconds. This year also they won the class football championship, greatly to their satisfaction. Nearly half of the men on the baseball team are from '93, so that it is evident that there was room for improvement, what- ever might have been the lofty opinion they had of themselves. In the Spring meeting and the Exeter-Andover meeting 193 did her share. Let the good work go on, '93! Next year you will be Seniors, and will have general supervision over Athletics, and you have no small burden to carry. You cannot see where your football and baseball teams are coming from, and the football outlook is especially gloomy. You have always had a very high idea of your own merit. Self-esteem is a good thing, but do not carry it too farg and in your Seniority do not forget that, not very long ago, you were Preps. And now, Farewell! cm Middle CIGSS. HERE is an old saying, as follows, If you can't say anything good of a person, don't say anything at all. What would be V the fate of ,Q4 did we but follow that most excellent precepti' Surell' she would go down to posterity unsung and unslandered. A sad feeling of disappointment gradually arose in the breasts of the. old lf. E. A. students as they stood on the platform of the railway SWUOII one day in September, 1890, and surveyed the immaterial which WHS to constitute the Prep. class of that year. b TO be sure, there were hopes that much improvement might be hzssgllf about by the lofty example set by the Faculty, by the gentle e influence of the Exeter landladies, and by the high moral tone Ef the P. E. A. students. But, unfortunately, these hopes seem to have fell groundless. It is no wonder that f' Bull -resigned when he fully :Eahzed hat from such material must come the future athletes who al 65001136 off the earth with our Massachusetts friends, literally OU the football, figuratively on the baseball field. To think that from it verdancy must come our future Exonian editors, Lit. writers, and Y far the most important of all-PEAN authors! Alas, 'tis sad, bill true! 1 All unkind fate has thrust this thing upon us, and we must endure It as - . . f best we may, accepting it as but another proof of the degeneracy O the thneg C253 What has Ninety-four done? What is she doing? What will she do? One word will answer each of these questions, and that word is Nothing! with a big N. At every tournament Ninety-four bobs up serenely with one or pos- sibly two second prizes to her credit, and twice, from being sublimely ridiculous, she has become ridiculously sublime by taking one first prize. Here ends Ninety-four's athletic history, for on the football and baseball fields she is almost unheard of. Ninety-four has always shown a deep and self-sacrificing interest in athletics. Its depth is manifested by the height of the soup-tureen into which she inevitably plunges when she ventures to appear on the field of strife, her self-sacrifice is shown by the massiveness of her sub- scriptions to football funds, etc. However, we are glad to learn that she is improving, and the PEAN Board, personally, has nothing to com- plain of in this respect. A One achievement can Ninety-four boast of, and only one. On a well- remembered night in the spring of ,QI the Seniors strove vainly for three long hours against the repeated attacks of Ninety-two, to maintain their flag on the Academy roof. At length the crowd was led by gentle words of warning to disperse, and quiet reigned. When dawn broke, a flag was seen sadly drooping from the steeple. Various were the conject- ures as to whether it was Ninety-one's or N inety-two's, but no other owner was dreamed off Imagine the surprise when it was found to be Ninety- four's! To be sure, the shirt which made the background was dirty, and the necktie which formed the figures was soiled 3 these but marked more strongly the personality of Ninety-four. Thanks to the rarely ex- cited energy of M--ll-r, the emblem of prepfish insolence was not permitted to long disgrace the building. And here ends the duty of' Ninety-four's historian. If she has done nothing good, yet she has done nothing bad, and it is to be hoped that we shall find, as others have before us, that angels are sometimes entertained unawares. ITH a short sketch of this class, we come to the last round in the anti-climax, and greatly rejoice that we have reached farm jirzmz once more. p The unpleasant duty of writing up this class fell to me fwhose name will not be divulged until Exeter is many leagues behindj, but, job-like, I will not complain. To write a history about nothing is like sharpening a lead-pencil with a blunt hoe, and if you, indulgent reader, have ever tried to do it, you have undoubtedly found it a tougher job than cutting an Exeter boarding-house steak with a sharp knife. Verily, in many respects it 'would be far better to omit it. How- ever, as this PEAN is intended for a record book, it would not do to ignore entirely the Preps., who in time, we hope, will rub off their rough edges, and become real and praiseworthy members of the Academy, or, in other words Qto borrow a well-known phrasej, H stu- dents of whom P. E. A. may well be proud. But to turn to '95 and to what she has done or left undone. The first morning in chapel a very curious sight met our eyes. Seated on the front rows were Preps. of all sizes, arranged in most unsymmetrical order. The majority, I must confess, was much in iwor of the little kids-Miller and Solari par example. They had not been here long before they began to believe that a '95-er was flzc sfzm and that Hz-ji.: Senior. I R305 Asses.-E Engraved and Primal by Lux Dag. Co.. Boston Has! The upper classmen, remembering, no doubt, the redzzr Qkj iio ad llb.YZl7'!2'lHll of Professor Wentworth, felt it their duty to remove this de- lusion. So, one dark night in September a band of Preps. was given a bath in the fl'!Zg'l'!l7lf UQ Fem. Sem. pond. The next morning the selectmen of the town returned a vote of thanks to the unknown per- petrators of this deed. The water was found to be so much fresher than it had ever been before! This same day we were recognized as Mc stuff when Preps. doffed their hats as the Seniors passed. The class distinguished itself in many other ways, but, first of all, by having no '95-er on the Academy eleven. To make up and equalize for this deficiency, however, they--the whole class-subscribed the immense sum of S7 Qseven dollarsj for its support! He who furnished live-sevenths of this amount is called, I hear, by his class- mates, King of the Preps. Truly a noble title and one worthy of the highest honor! It has been whispered about school that they did have a class eleven, but whether they had or not is a mystery to most of us. judging, however, from the score of the '94-'95 stand-up-and-go-as-you-please scrap we are led to think that their eleven was a minus quantity. Still, they must have known what they were about, as it is QIIIZZIZV, not q11a11i1'zj', that the school wants, and in acting according to this maxim they show that they are beaux ideals of what a student should be. In the winter tournament '95 took a brace and carried off three tirsts, thereby leaving '94 way in the rear, and taking revenge on them for the football defeat. This shows what you can do, '95. Keep it up, and let your light shine -have no Bible, and so must stop short. C31 J Preparatory' Class. -9-SNJSQH' O F F I QE R S . L. P. ADAMS . Prcsz'rlc11l. E. B. BECKWITH . Vice-Prcsidellzf. L. N.
