'M ai 7 ,..,. c- cnZO-H-HIP History of Publications aria! . LL the present publications in Phillips are more or less directly the outgrowth of one-the old Plzilo Mz'1'r'o1'. The Philo jllirror, a quarterly, was first printed in 1854, after existing for seventeen years in manuscript forma These early fM'r1-ars, though ratl1er,.th,in,'-are of surprisingly high ' literary merit, indeed, little impr0vgm6iit'in quality was ever made in the forty years of the paper's existence. The size, however, was gradually doubled, tripled, and quadrupled, until by the early Eighties it had become a huge affair of over a hundred pages, the greater part con- sisting of JW-I'111zrrz' and Class Book matter, which, first creeping in towards the end of the Sixties, had grown out of all proportion and clicked the literary development. The Ml'7'I'0I' grew fatter and fatter, till at last, in I892, the absurdity of issuing a Pa!-Pom-1'z' three times a year was realized, and the clumsy old IWIIU fllirrar made over into two new publications. The monthly Philfqhs !1lIII'07't.'l' Jllirror, edited by a board selected from the entire school, succeeded to the literary part, and an annual, at first called the MIZSQIZB and published by Philo, to the pot-pourri. The Jlhrror, though it has undergone, many changes and alterations, has appeared regularly for the ten years, and seems now to have settled into a permanent form. It fills, or ought to fill, an important place in school life. Oneof the best of the recent changes in the JlIz'rror is the increase from seven to nine issues a year. The Jlhzsyue appeared for the first and last time in 1893, clad in most magnificent attire. But the days for the debating societies to control the publications were. past: the school had grown, and although perhaps Philo herself had never before been so prosperous as then, her comparative infiu- ence was nothing to what it had been thirty or forty years before. The foundation of Forum, too, made the continuance of the existing conditions impossible. 58 In 1894, the Pol-Pourrz' appeared published by Philo and Forum to- gether, since which date it has been edited, like all the other publications, by an independent board. The Phz'11Q5z'au was lirst issued as a fortnightly editorial and news sheet in 1878. In the twenty-four years of its existence it has undergone many improvements, alterations and enlargements until it is now a bi-weekly news- paper notable as one of the most successful periodicals of its kind in the country. Strange to say, Andover had no Senior Class Book until 1897, when the present book sprang into existence. It fully supplies the long felt want, and is a credit to the school. Andover maintains several publications, but no more than her position demands. They form an indispensable branch of the school life and cannot be neglected, for their strength or weakness reflects directly upon the name ofthe school. Realizing this, the school as a whole is gladly giving them that support which they deserve, and upon which their existence depends. Robcr! Linralzz Clark. N 59 -api 4 . ,,,. The football squad was soon out, and on the slender foundation of two veterans a very creditable team was built up. A tie game with Needham A. A. was premature, as the team was not yet itself, but the second game of the season came in the shape of a victory over Somerville, 5-o. Throughout the year Dr. Bancroft had been ailing, and on Friday, the fourth of October, a gloom was cast over the school by his death. The annual Fall Meet was pulled off very successfully, and McGovern broke the record for the pole vault. The football team disappointed many by its defeat at the hands of both Harvard and Yale Fresh., but took a wonderful brace at the end of the season, and held the vastly heavier Exeter team down to five points. 149 Phillips Street put an excellent team into the field for the inter-street games, and successfully wiped it up with all her rivals. An excellent vaudeville entertainment was followed by the regular concert of the Musical Clubs, and-Christmas vacation was upon us. Whereupon we all went home, with the possible exception of any Fiji Islanders or South Africanders in our midst. WINTER TERM The Hockey Team opened the season at New York the day before the the term commenced. Our St. Paul opponents won narrowly, 2-1, but with the exception of a bare defeat at Harvard's hands the team won its every other game. Even Brown went down before it, to the tune of 7-1. As early as the- Fall Term some interest had been shown in basket ball, and during the winter months a team was formed which had lots of fun with its numerous opponents, going through its schedule without a defeat. February witnessed Andover's victory over Exeter in the Relay Race at the B. A. A. Meet. It was too easy. Then, too, came the Alumni Dinner. In March we sent a delegation of two to the Students' Convention at Toronto, and later a very different delegation of perhaps eighty Seniors departed for Boston and dined at Young's. We heard at the Tremont Theatre that there is no King but Dodo, but everybody felt like a king on the return trip. Everybody was so happy-some too happy, so the faculty thought. The Musical Clubs concerted pretty much all over the state this term, ending up with a very successful one-night stand in this town. Andover could do no better than third in the Interscholastic Meet at Boston just before the Easter vacation. SPRING TERM Captain O'Brien's men opened the season with Maine the day after the term opened. Maine won, II-7,bl.1f thereafter followed a series of suc- cesses, culminating QI like that wordj in a close and glorious defeat by Harvard. r 50 Early in the term the Philo-Forum debate took place. Forum was a little off forrum, and Philo pulled off ahead. The Spring Meet soon followed, to determine the men to contest with Exeter. As it was a windy day, Hflbf one record was brokeng but some good men were picked, as Exeter will testify. Then our athletes did good work at the Meet at Yale, and left the victory hanging between Andover and Worcester. Baseball Hlled the rest of the term. A rather natural varsity slump followed three successive but honorable defeats by the three biggest of the Big Four, and Andover lost where it should have won. Let's leave the Exeter game alone. On the nineteenth of june school closes. Then comes Commencement, and those nightmares, College Exams. Then some say good-bye to And- over-these are the Yale, Harvard, and other college sub-freshmen. By far the greater part say only au revoir. J. N. GREELv, P. A. 'oz.
