Many ofthe kinks to be found in anything new have been worked out, and the process of education continues within this magnificent structure. The first class of seniors was graduated from this building last year. A full year of extracurricular activities was carried out. The building was not all that was new last year. New courses, new clubs, new sports, new instructors, new rules, new freedoms-all were typical of the transition period. Now that period is passed, we may now move forward to new heights in all endeavors, confident that the facilities afforded by our school will enable us to receive the best in education. Buildings, of course, do not make pupils: but buildings may help pupils become students by alilording them the opportunity to advance in many areas. We feel our school can and will do this. Dedication JENNINGS D. JOHNSTON With fondest memories we, the Class of 1960, dedicate this year- book to Mr. Jennings D. Johnston, who suddenly passed cway Sunday, September 20, 1959, while he was showing our new school to some of his relatives and friends. As a member of the schooI's maintenance stat? he had become in- valuable to the students, faculty, administration and other staff mem- bers. He was very cheerful, friendly and willingly helpful to everyone. Mr. Johnston will be remembered by all with sincere attection and respect. Mountaineer Staff Co-editors ,..., .. Photography . . .. EHRENFELD, B.S., M.S. Supervising Principal It is with pleasure that I extend to the members of the class of i960 my congratulations in attaining graduation which is but a beginning in life's broader fields. Much that you have gained in these formative years will clear the way for success in your future endeavors. The truly educated person has learned a sense of justice, duty, truth, honesty-not only because it is the best policy, but because it is right. We hope that your high school education will aid you in the realiza- tion of these qualities as you travel life's road. M. S. HANCOCK, A.B., M.Ed. Senior High School Principal in this day of wonders, a high school education assumes a new and deeper significance. We can point with pride to all of the great accomplishments of the past but we must also be aware of the challenges of the present. It is only through the solid foundation of a thor- ough education that you can hope to meet those chal- lenges. There is no easy way to this meeting, but rather it means that each one must use the ability with which he is endowed to the greatest extent possible. Your high school education is not an end in itself, but rather the means to an end. The diploma you re- ceive is a testimonial that you have availed yourself ofthe opportunities presented to a reasonable degree. You, yourself, knaw whether you have made the most of those opportunities. EDWARD J. GRUNDY, B.S., M.Ed. Director of Curricula Many roads stretching into the future will loom ahead for each of you who has successfully completed the requirements for graduation. None of these roads will be entirely free from detours regardless of your planning. lt is hoped that the training received in the Philipsburg-Osceola Area Schools has helped to pre- pare you to confront these obstacles as you meet them on Life's highways of tomorrow. District Band Guest Conductor The District Band Festival of the Pennsylvania Music Education Association was held in our school on February 11, 12, 13. Students from schools in the Central District competed for chair positions in the district band. Families in the Philipsburg area served as hosts for the visiting band members by provide ing them with lodging and breakfast. All other meals were served in the school cafeteria. The guest conductor this year, as in 1956, was Leonard B. Smith. Mr. Smith is a famous 78 Leonard B. Smith cornet soloist, composer and conductor. In addi- tion to conducting the high school musicians, Mr. Smith played some solo numbers at each of the three concerts. Public response to the concerts was evidenced by the full-house at the afternoon and evening performances. A dance was held forthe partici- pants in the school gym. All in all, the Festival this year was o great success due mainly to the hard work of Mr. John Manner, Local music sus pervisar. All Class Play Time Out for Ginger All those on hand for the kickoff of the first All Class Play were really cheering about Time Out For Ginger, a story of a girl whose main desire in life was to be a football player. Her ambition led to many complications. Her father was in danger of losing his iob, her sis- ters rejected the unacceptable extracurricular activity, her boyfriend refused to take her out and fight society. The long sultering Mother and Father, the exuberant Ginger, the sophisticated sisters, the patient boyfriend, the arrogant captain of the football team, the flighty maid and the staid banker and high school principal are all characters that will long be remembered. All in all Time Out For Ginger scored a touchdown with the audience! C a st ,. ,,...... . , Betty Kephari ....., , , Janet Malicki , .. Ron Westwood , ., ,, Joy Meyer Darla Beach ,, Claudia Behrner . MURDER IN A NUNNERY Our second all-class play, Murder in cl Nunnery, was presented on April 22. This who - nun - it was a spine-chilling thriller complete with a dead body, an expert knife-hurler, a float- ing apparition and all the other elements that go toward keeping an audience in suspense. Even the members ofthe cast didn't know who the killer was until the last moment, since the last scene of the third act, the one that tells aIl, was removed from the script before tryouts. Everyone had a great time trying to deduce iust who was the guilty party. Murder in a Nunnery presented quite a challenge to the technical crews as well as the actors. Many scene changes were necessaryg costuming was unusual, and the lighting was very tricky to handle. ln spite ofthe hard work, a good time was had by all who participated in the show.
