A 1.1 :mt iirl f1-- r - -1 -1 PHILIPSB HG JUI S NEW EUUTBALL LEAGUE A new football league, the Central Counties or the Big 12 was organized at a meeting held in the Tyrone Y. M. C. A. on May 3, 1944. The following schools are members: Bellefonte, Clearfield, DuBois, Huntingdon, Hollidaysburg, Lewistown, Lock Haven, Mount Union, Philips- burg, Punxsutawney, State College and Tyrone. The object of this league was to promote the highest type of sportsmanship relations among the member schools. Instead of recognizing a champion team, the league adopted a plan of awarding a trophy or trophies to the outstand- ing team or teams in this league which was to be determined by the number of league games won, lost and tied and by other pertinent factors such as weather, schedule, improvement shown during the season, etc. In order to be consid- ered for standing in the league, each member school was required to have played a mini- mum of four league games and the league en- couraged the scheduling of games with other members of the league. The State College and Huntingdon teams were designated as out- standing league teams for the 1944 season. The record of the Philipsburg High School team for the 1944 season in the new league was one win, one tie and four defeats. Union at Tyrone Lewistown WRESTLING Lewistoown at Clearfield at Lock Haven Tyrone at DuBois at Tyrone at Hollidaysburg State College Mar. 1-2 Clearfield District Tournament Mar. 8-9 State College State Tournament The Iunior Varsity team won two and lost three games in a tough five game schedule. The team showed improvement in each game and the games that were lost were mainly due to inexperience rather than spirit and sports- manship. Many of the boys from this team will be able to replace the veterans who will not answer the call for the 1945 season. Prospects for a good team next year are bright. This contest was conducted by the English and History Departments and all juniors were required to write an essay in class without reference books. From these, six were chosen and requested to give their essays before the high school assembly and three judges chosen by the D.A.R. From the six contestants Bliss Shankle was the winner. The six papers and their subjects were: Achieved Heritage , Bliss Shankleg l Am Old Glory , Agnas Zavalydriga: Youths Heritage , Deloras Troutman, Let Us Keep Faith , Deloras Granlunp Story of Old Glory , Betty Yonker: Our Living Dead , Bev- erly Gearhart, All six contestants receive certificates as evidence of their participation in the 45 con- test. The winner was awarded S5 in Defense Stamps at Commencement. RIFLE CLUB At the beginning of the year the Rifle Club under the direction of Mr. Lewis Lucas, had a very promising turn out. During the first meeting the following offi- cers were elected: Ken Fink---President, lack Beals -Vice President, Ken Luken Secretary- Treasurer. Approximately seventy boys applied for membership. Of these, many were from the seventh and eighth grades. This was the first year in the history of the club that these young- er lads have been permitted to try their skill at marksmanship. A written examination had to be passed by all who became members. Many of the appli- cants were reiected who couldn't pass the exam and also those who failed to pass the eye test when they sighted-in on the sight align- ment. The problem of obtaining shells was solved by a conribution of one full case from the Vet- erans of Foreign Wars and one from the U. S. government. Due to lack of experienced rifle-men no matches were shot. All members of rifle club look forward to a larger and better organized rifle club next year and increased membership. Approximately IOO persons took part in rifle club this year. l Mark, Ned, 6- Tom 2. Pdui G Carmen 3, Lucy 6- lane 4. Barb, Freda, Velma G Mary Lou 5.
