The Clinics The Out Patient Department of the Philipsburg State Hospital is under the supervision of Miss Frances Houck. All this work is done in special clinics located in the basement of our hospital. A Cleft Palate Clinic is held once a month for the purpose of diagnosing and recommending treatment for cleft palate and cleft lip patients. This Clinic has been in operation under the direction of the Department of Health since October, 1949, and examine on the average of 250 cases yearly. In addition to the above number of patients the Clinic Staff also examine adults who are spon- sored by the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation. The Clinic Staff consists of: Cloyd S. Harkins, D.D,S., WVilliam B. Harkins, D.D.S., Prosthodontists, Robert L. Harding, M.D., Plastic Surgeon, Eugene T. McDonald, E.D., Speech Therapist, and I. Harry Blackwell, M. Ed., Psychologist. Cleft palate and cleft lip children require very special care from birth to adult- hood. Because of the coordinated and thoughtful planning of these specialists an individualized long term program can be outlined for each child. An important part in the conquest of Tuberculosis in Pennsylvania is carried on in the Pneumotherapy Clinical where air is introduced into the thoracic cavity to collapse the infected lung and promote healing. Here Dr. George Taylor, Clinician in charge of this clinic, gives treatment to a Tuberculosis patient. This service which is given weekly, permits patients to ucurev in their own homes among their own people. Dr. H. Ford Clark, Ophthalmologist, of Huntingdon, is shown examining the eye of this patient in the Eye Clinic. This clinic serves patients with refractive errors, and medical and surgical pathology. lt is held weekly on VVednesday, and patients from a wide area are referred for the specialized care available here. Dr. Costello, Orthopedic Surgeon, of Williamsport, comes monthly to ex- amine and treat orthopedically crippled children from Centre, Clearfield, and Elk Counties. He is shown examining a boy who may require years of observa- tion, bracing, and surgical treatment. This service is sponsored by the Clearfield- Centre Crippled Children,s Society. A very important community service, given in co-operation with the WVarren State Hospital, is that of the Mental Clinic which is held monthly. Here patients with a psychiatric or neurological problems are examined and treatment is out- lined to the family physician. Dr. Urbaitis, Psychiatrist, is here interviewing a patient in the clinic. Dr. Patta, shown with them. is a resident in Psychiatry in the Warren State Hospital, and will return to his native India in 1956 to work in a mental hospital in that country. Many problems are presented in this division by the persons who pass through. Within the facilities of the department, an effort is made to help the person to the proper service for his need. 68
