Guillard, we the Seniors of 1955 humbly dedicate our edition of Reflections. You have been a member of our hospital staff for the past three years, and in this time have served faithfully toward the betterment of mankind. Your ready wit and sense of humor have helped to make our training period more enjoyable, and we wish to thank you for the many times you have offered your assistance to us in trying situations. We'll always remember your hours of classroom in- structions, and your kindness, patience, and understanding not only to those under your care but also to the students. In future years may you find the prosperity, happiness and success which you so rightfully deserve. 7 Hs- R- nun - .- -f-W Mom! of sjwwlfeea Our Hospital could not be run without the aid of our administrative board of nine members. Q? 53 L aw ,, 1 , Qfiuafe mmf? cggclfion Despite the growth of hospital care, an increased demand has been noticed for private duty nurses. Private practice represents nursing in its broadest con- ception up to about 1918. Broadly speaking, it is the giving of nursing care to one or more patients who pay the nurse directly by the patient or his family. In this field the nurse gives nursing care in the home, in the hospital and sometimes she is called upon to travel with a patient. Nursing in private practice involves the performance of any act that will help the patient physically, mentally or spiritually. I can hardly believe that these three years are coming to an end. En- closed are some snapshots that I value highly and wish to put in my scrap book so will you please put them in a safe place for me. These snaps will always enable me to remember the many happy moments I have had with my classmates. Remember, Mom, September I, 1952 when I tirst packed to come in training? Weren't those suit cases heavy? Especially when we had to carry them up those flights of stairs. Dad sure seemed like a bellboy that night. We met many new friends that first night, but it was still lonely away from home. Eagerly we each attempted to arrange our rooms to remind us of home and soon we heard the footsteps of our housemother, Mrs. Hoyt, telling us that it was time to go to bed. At 5:30 A. M. our alarms were ringing and twenty-eight girls were scurrying about the halls preparing for our 1 first breakfast. The next step was the classroom, and books were thrown at us from all angles!!! We never realized classes could be so hard and study hours so long. I guess we didn't realize that you knew what you were talking about Mother. Remember, Mother, how excited we were when three weeks had passed 30 and it was time for our first day on the wards. You know law: I hated to clean at home!!! Well, that was our first assignment at the hospital ancl we really felt we were a great help. Finally initiation day arrived. We were nearly all frightened to death but we still had a wonderful time that day. Everyone was laughing at our odd costumes and we felt self-conscious and conspicuous among the doctors and other nurses. After Christmas vacation many subiects finished and examinations were given. Long hours were spent studying and cramming and usually we were re- warded with a passing grade. On February 27, 1953 we reached our first milestone in our career. We were very proud to receive our caps and each of us solemnly pledged to uphold our profession to the best of our ability. l still think Dad just about burst the buttons of his coat with pride. ln June when our classes were completed, we went on our long awaited summer vacation. We re- turned with renewed energy and determination to finish our training. Our first class separation came in our Junicr year when six of our classmates went to Warren State Hos- pital in January 1954 for their psychiatric affiliation. Boy! Mother, this was a new experience and each of us profited by it. Along with classes and study we all participated in many social activities and a good time was had by all of us. When the time came for us to leave Warren, many tears were shed among our new friends. As we went further in our training our re' sponsibilities increased and be began our special serves which included the diet kitchen, maternity, pediatrics and operating room. From these serves we learned many new techniques and diFferent types of 31 nursing care which added greatly to our knowledge of nursing. Gosh, Mom, here it is the third year of our training and it sure has been a long struggle. Our 1-. M.- ,-g i ,, We I main activities now lie in earning money for the pub- ' ,gf lication of our yearbook. Remember all the cakes you baked for our food sales, and you were also a number ' material for our yearbook and soon you will see our Reflections . Mom, l hope you clon't have too much trouble putting the finishing touches on my gown for soon the ,z L., one sponsor of our class when you bought all those cards, and chances cn our Thanksgiving turkey and stole. Many spring evenings were spent compiling big nightp our prom, will arrive. Each one of us are looking forward to it with high expectations and I hope we all find dates, and won't have to take Dad. 32 Graduation, the next step in the fulfillment of our long awaited dreams will soon be here. Each one of us will enter that evening with a greater understanding of the ideals of our profession and as we take our pledge we will be dedicating ourselves for the better- ment of the human race. Don't forget Mom and Dad, come early and get a goocl seat. Thanks to both of you for all your encouragement when I became dis- couraged and down hearted. For it it weren't for 4'-H you l might have been one among the several who resigned during these three years. Our time has been well spent. Thanks to the most wonderful parents in the world. Here it is the end of our Junior year and we have climbed another step on the ladder of success. lt seems like only yesterday that we traded in our Freshmen classes for Junior experiences. Among these were the Operating-Room, Maternity, Pediatrics, and the Diet Kitchen. These special serves gave us important experiences and added responsibiliy to shoulder. The initial separation of our class of twenty-seven came about when the first of four groups left to take their psychiatric aFfiliation in Warren. This con- sised of three months of study, visualization, and care of this type patient. However we could never overlook the social aspects of our nursing. The parties, dances, and the infamous gala sessions have all played a very im- portant role in the life of each student nurse. To you Seniors, we'd like to express our thanks for helping make our Junior year an unforgettable milestone. As your graduation day looms before you, may we, the Class of 1956, extend our heartiest congratulations to you on a job well done. it J. We are the Class of 1957. On June 7, 1954 we entered the Nurses Home of the Philipsburg State Hospital. Twenty-two girls fresh out of high school searching for that one ambition of our lives-to become a nurse. Our first impression of PSH? We were scared, and yet our desire to be suc- cessful nurses made us forget everything else except we were going to like our new life. The first day of stay here, we arose that morning with the sun, eagerly awaiting the events of the coming day. After eating a hearty breakfast we hurried to our first class. We soon became more acquainted with Mrs. Bishop and Miss Smith, who reassured us and told us how to readjust our lives to living and working together in our future years of nursing. Our Probie months fiew by, filled with fun and long hours of hard work and studying. During this time we were initiated by the Juniors. We had a lot of fun that night, eats and everything. As time went on, we finally reached the night that we received the reward for those long hours of hard work- Our Cap- ping Exercises -which took place on November 19, 1954, the first milestone in the nursing profession. How proud we were and how proud our parents and friends must have been the moment the symbol of our proffession, our caps, were placed on our heads. The rest of our first year as students rushed by, full of long hours of work on the wards and classes, but we had our social activities too, the Halloween and Christmas parties brought much entertainment and fun. All this work is done in special clinics located in the basement of our hospital. A Cleft Palate Clinic is held once a month for the purpose of diagnosing and recommend- ing treatment for cleft palate and cleft lip pa- tients. This Clinic has been in operation under the direction of the Department of Health since October, l949, and examine on the average of 250 cases yearly. In addition to the above num- ber of patients the Clinic Staff also examine adults who are sponsored by the Bureau of Vo- cational Rehabilitation. The Clinic Staff consists of: Cloyd S. Har- kins, D.D.S., William R. Harkins, D.D.S., Pros- thodontists, Robert L. Harding, M.D., Plastic Sur- geon, Eugene T. McDonald, E. D., Speech Ther- apist, and J. Harry Blackwell, M. Ed., Psycholo- gist. Cleft palate and cleft lip children require very special care from birth to adulthood. Because of the coordinated and thoughtful plan- ning of these specialists an individualized long- term program can be outlined for each child. An important part in the conquest of Tuber- culosis in Pennsylvania is carried on in the Pneu- motherapy Clinical where air is introduced into the thoracic cavity to collapse the infected lung and promote healing. Here Dr. George Taylor, clinician in charge of this clinic, gives treatment to a Tuberculosis patient. This service which is given weekly, permits patients to cure in their own homes among their own people. 72 -l 1 E L, Lmfcd Dr. H. Ford Clark, Ophthalmologist, of Hun- tingdon, is shown examining the eye of this pa- tient in the Eye Clinic. This clinic serves patients with refractive errors, and medical and surgical pathology. It is held weekly on Wednesday, and patients from a wide area are referred for the specialized care available here. Dr. Costello, Orthopedic Surgeon, of Wil- liamsport, comes monthly to examine and treat orthopedically crippled children from Centre, Clearfield, and Elk Counties. He is shown exam- ining a boy who may require years of observa- tion, bracing, and surgical treatment. This ser- vice is sponsored by the Clearfield-Centre Crip- pled Children's Society. A very important community service, given in co-operation with the Warren State Hospital, is that of the Mental Clinic which is held monthly. Here patients with a psychiatric or neurological problems are examined and treatment is outlined to the family physician. Dr. Urbaitis, Psychia- trist, is here interviewing a patient in the clinic. Dr. Patti, shown with them, is a resident in Psy- chiatry in the Warren State Hospital, and will return to his native India in 1956 to work in a mental hospital in that country. Many problems are presented in this divi- sion by the persons who pass through. Within the facilities ofthe department, an effort is made to help the person to the proper service for his need. 73 l '1 l 'f ' T. GM WHERE'S THE FOOD? ? ? ining OOWLZ5 WHAT'S NEW IN THE NEWS??? We find that no two girls are alike. As each student arrives, she is assigned to her room, and given instruc- tions concerning the rules which are to be observed. Every day we check the rooms to see that they have been dusted. In addition beds must be made and personal belongings put away. When evening arrives we check to see that each student is in study hall from 7:30 to 9:30 P.M. and at 10 P.M. we again check to see that the girls are in bed and lights out for the night. At 'l'l:30 P.M. the relief girls come off duty and their lights must be off at 12 midnight. We then lock the doors and our day is done. as ,ff s . 3 . ,, . JS? -Q , Q. 0 WM. mari! ,Muff WM. Mrs. Myrna Stoker, operating room supervisor for 33 years, and Mrs. Ella Noll, kitchen helper for 25 years. We regret valuable employees leaving our institution, but they well have earned their retirement. A ioint party was given them by the Board of Trustees, Doctors, Nurses, office personnel, maintenance department and domestic employees. They were given gifts they can long enjoy. 83 names ,xdfnmnae Mocioalfion The Nurses Alumnae of the Philipsburg State Hospital was organized in 1926. Quoting from the constitution the object is as follows- To advance the standing and interests of the graduates of the training school. To extend aid to those in trouble or sickness. To promote social activity. To raise the standing of nursing to the highest plane. Our organization keeps close contact with the American Nurses Association and the Pennsylvania Nurses Association by sponsoring graduate as well as student representation to na- tional, state, and district meetings. Monthly meetings are held by the association on the second Thursday of each month with certain special activities, such as the Annual White Elephant Party in January, Mother and Daughter Dinner in May, Picnic in July, and Dinner and Dance for the graduation class in August. To date we have 209 active members. In memory of Cecilia Ferlitch, who gave her life in World War Il, the association also presents an award to the most out- standing student nurse in the senior class. OFFICERS President .....,. .,...
