iw. i Elizabeth Rerko Emily Teeters Mary Tingle FRESHMAN C ASS HISTORY Who will ever forget September 7, 1953, our first day as pre-clinical students at the Nurses Home? Along with our fears, our expec- tations were great. How quickly we were awakened from day dreaming when classes began the next day in- structed by the professors from the Pennsylvania State University. Little by little, we realized what other graduate nurses have gone through in order to write R. N. after their name. As pre-clinicals, we were guests of honor at the annual initiation party held by the Juniors. Throughout our pre-clinical period there were other social events planned for our enioyment. Another highlight during these first six months was our vacation in December. February 1, our first day on the ward was memorable also. But the climax of our pre-clinical life was on March 5, 1954. lt was then that we realized our six months of struggling had not been in vain, for now the symbol of our profession, the cap, was ours. We were more than proud to wear it. And now with our new title, Freshman, we bid you Seniors, the Class of 1954, farewell, thanks, and may success and happiness be yours.

THE NURSE The world grows better year by year, Because some nurse in her little sphere, Puts on her apron and grins and sings, And keeps on doing the same old things. Taking the temperatures, giving the pills To remedy mankind's numberless ills! Feeding the baby, answering the bells Being polite with a heart that rebels. Longing for home and all the while Wearing the same old professional smile, Blessing the new-born babes first breath, Closing the eyes that are still in death. Taking the blame for the Doctor's mistakes Oh, dear, what a lot of patience it takes, Going oi? duty at seven o'clock Tired, discouraged, and ready to drop. When we lay down our caps and cross the bar Oh, Lord, will you give us iust one little star To wear in our crowns with our uniforms new In that city above, where the Head Nurse is You -Unknown 53
