Surgical Nursing Cook County PRIVATE DUTY Private duty was one of the firstvdivisions of nursing, and was first organ- ized in 1946. Today it is the largest section in the state and is the best organ- ized section of any in the profession. Rules and regulations for private duty nurses are written in Harrisburg. The private duty nurse spends eight hours with one patient. Some are acutely ill and demand more time than the general duty nurse can spare for one patient. Two of the responsibilities of a private duty nurse are: I. Comfort the patient mentally and physically. 2. Consider the patient's family in cases of serious illness and death, and comfort them to the best of her ability. The private duty section congratulates the Class of 1954. L, V , - f X 5 SENIUR C ASS HISTORY Necessary to the completion of our book is a history of our three years in nurses training. A list of dates could suffice but could never hold all of our precious memories. Who can forget September 3, 1951, when our dreams of our future destiny started to become a reality? Here in a strange environment we found new friends and a new way of living. Classes, books, long study hours, and anticipation confronted us each day. Yet our hours of work and study were compensated with carefree hours, parties, gab sessions in our rooms, and laughter ringing through the halls of our home. During an impressive candlelight service, we received our Caps on February 29, 1952. Already we were beginning to be rewarded for our toil. And then we were Juniors! Our days were filled with ex- citement of work on special departments-Maternity, Diet Kitch- en, Pediatrics, and the Operating Room. Our first group of class- mates left for their Psychiatric Affiliation at Warren State Hos- pital. Three months separation seemed long, but letters from the girls back home cheered our days. Can we really believe we were Seniors so soon? How long it had seemed and then it happened so suddenly. With the title of seniors we found new responsibility and more work to be accomplished. Our last summer together was sprinkled with social gather- ings. Billowing formal gowns on a summer eve meant the sen- ior banquet and dance given for us by the Alumnae Association. With graduation, receiving our pins, diplomas, and con- gratulations, may we journey further down the road to success finding happiness and satisfaction in our profession. 30 FLEMING, PA. Armstrong 45 UNIUR C ASS HISTURY How quickly the time passes! Now as we are about to leave behind us the title of Juniors, we begin to reminisce about the past year. January brought about the separation of our class for the first time when six of our group left for Warren, Pennsylvania. These three months are spent in learning about psychiatry and the care of this type of patient. As the months went by they re- turned and others took their place. As Juniors we also had more responsibility on the wards, we eagerly accepted it and tried to prove our worth. Special serves such as the diet kitchen, obstetrics, pediatrics, and the operating room were begun with enthusiasm and the time passed more quickly than ever. We pause now before we leave our Junior year and thank the Seniors for helping us adiust to the hospital routine. We have enjoyed their friendship during the last two years. Along with our fears, our expec- tations were great. How quickly we were awakened from day dreaming when classes began the next day in- structed by the professors from the Pennsylvania State University. Little by little, we realized what other graduate nurses have gone through in order to write R. N. after their name. As pre-clinicals, we were guests of honor at the annual initiation party held by the Juniors. Throughout our pre-clinical period there were other social events planned for our enioyment. Another highlight during these first six months was our vacation in December. February 1, our first day on the ward was memorable also. But the climax of our pre-clinical life was on March 5, 1954. lt was then that we realized our six months of struggling had not been in vain, for now the symbol of our profession, the cap, was ours. We were more than proud to wear it. And now with our new title, Freshman, we bid you Seniors, the Class of 1954, farewell, thanks, and may success and happiness be yours. PRE-CLINICA S First Row-Hale, Pusey, Mott, Swidersky, Beckwith, Cebulko, Erickson, Ashcroft, English, Second Row-Mineweaser, Bish, Scovern, Sankey, Arnold, Gordon, D. Williams, Schnars, Yingling, H, Williams, Hummel, Zakutney, Sanpietro. On June 7, 1954, twenty-two new students entered the Philipsburg State Hospital School of Nursing. They have the title of Pre-Clinicals for the next six months, the first three months will be spent in learning the Sciences from The Pennsylvania State University. The professors will teach this program at the local hospital. Then will 'Follow ward experience combined with classes to assist them to correlate their knowledge. It was organized for the purpose of raising funds for the purchase of equipment for the hospital. Also To sew and make dressings and bandages etc. as required by the hospital. To collect the Thanksgiving donations from schools of the district for the hospital. To assist in any line of service connected with the hospital as requested by the superintendent. The auxiliary also provides gifts and favors for hospital patients at Christmas and sponsors the annual Charity Ball as a means of raising funds. Dinner meetings are held the second Friday of each month, excepting June, July and August at the Nurses Home. Quoting from the constitution the object is as follows- To advance the standing and interests of the graduates of the training school. To extend aid to those in trouble or sickness. To promote social activity. To raise the standing of nursing to the highest plane. Our organization keeps close contact with the American Nurses Association and The Pennsylvania Nurses Association by sponsoring graduate as well as student representation to national, state, and district meetings. Monthly meetings are held by the association on the second Thursday of each month with certain special activities, such as the Annual White Elephant Party in January, Mother and Daughter Dinner in May, Picnic in July, and Dinner and Dance for the graduation class in August. To date we have 209 active members. In memory of Cecilia Ferlitch who gave her life in World War II, the associa- tion presents an award to the most outstanding student nurse in the senior class. UR Much of the out patient services of the Philipsburg State Hospital is channelled through the basement clinics where Miss Frances Houck is in charge. Typical of the general services given is that of Dr. ShoFf who here inspects a cast on this patient's arm. Much of the out patient services given on this division, exclusive of the organ- ized clinics, is to fracture and cast patients. Each month the cleft palate clinic is held to diagnose and recommend treatment for cleft palate and cleft lip patients. Here are shown Dr. C. S. Harkins, prosthodontist, of Osceola Mills, Dr. Robert L. Harding, plastic surgeon of Harrisburg, and Eugene McDonald, speech cor- rectionist of the Pennsylvania State University, having a consultation following the examination of this cleft palate patient. Not shown in this picture is the fourth member of the team , .James H. Blackwell, M. Ed., of Clearfield, psy- chologist for the service. An important part in the conquest of tuber- culosis in Pennsylvania is carried on in the Pneu- motherapy clinics where air is introduced into the thoracic cavity to collapse the infected lung and promote healing. Here Dr. George Taylor, clinician in charge of this clinic, gives treatment to a tuberculosis patient. This service which is given weekly, permits patients to cure in their own homes among their own people. 68 CLINICS Dr. H. Ford Clark, Ophthalmologist, of Hun- tingdon, is shown testing the visual fields of this patient in the Eye Clinic. This clinic serves pa- tients with refractive errors, and medical and surgical pathology. It is held weekly on Wed- nesday, and patients from a wide area are re- ferred for the specialized care available here. Dr. Roy L. Simon, Orthopedic Surgeon, of Williamsport, comes monthly to examine and treat orthopedically crippled children from Cen- tre, Clearfield, and Elk Counties. He is shown examining a baby who may require years of observation, bracing, and surgical treatment. This service is sponsored by the Clearfield-Centre Crippled Children's Society. A very important community service, given in co-operation with the Warren State Hospital, is that of the Mental Clinic which is held month- ly. Here patients with psychiatric or neurologi- cal problems are examined and treatment is out- lined to the family physicians. Dr. John C. Urbitas, psychiatrist, is here interviewing a pa- tient in the clinic. Dr. Patti, shown with Dr. Urbitas, is a resident in psychiatry in the Warren State Hospital, and will return to his native India in 1956 to work in a mental hospital in that country. Many problems are presented in this divi- sion by the persons who pass through.
