We boast of lOO'X: membership in the American Nurses Association. The obiect of our section is to provide individual attention and a special type of care which cannot be accomplished by the hospital personnel. Our organization meets the second Thursday of each month preceding the regular alumnae meetings. OPJQPAQJ Wainfenance 8lO6Ll lfl4fL8l'Lt V 'W' l Qrfiroloecfic 661150 One of the Clinics held at the Philips- burg State Hospital which gives us an opportunity to help in the transforma- tion of many young lives from an out- look of hopelessness and despair to that of hopefulness and a courageous facing of the future is the Crippled Children's Clinic. For more than twenty-five years, these Clinics have been held at the Phil- ipsburg State Hospital. The Hospital provides the room and the facilities of the Operating Room, X-ray and Physiotherapy. The Clearfield and Centre Counties Society for Crippled Children pays the Surgeon and his as- sistant and also pays for corrective ap- pliances such as braces, shoes, and crutches for the children whose parents are unable to do so. The Service rendered to these crip- pled children are of the highest quality obtainable. Dr. Royal L. Simon of Wil- liamsport, Pennsylvania is the present Orthopedic Surgeon and is very ably as- sisted by Dr. John Shoff, a member of our Hospital Staff. newmolieraloy 661450 The Pneumotherapy Clinic, in charge of Dr. George Taylor, is a service to tubercular patients receiving collapse therapy under the program of the State De- partment of Health. Treatment of these patients is started in one of the State Tuberculosis Sanatoriums and is continued here following their discharge. This service makes it possible for these persons, who may be under this care for several years, to be at home with their families. Some whose physical condition permits light types of employment, may be able to do some work and be treated at the same time. 38 link- KLA pdfafe 661450 The Cleft Palate Clinic is a service of the Cleft Pal- ate Division, Department of Health and was organized at the Philipsburg Hospital in T949 by Cloyd S. Har- kins, D. D. S., Director of the Clinic, tor the complete rehabilitation of children and adults born with cleft palate and cleft lip. The Clinic is held once a month where a detailed diagnostic study is made for each patient. The Clinic Staff is composed ot Robert L. Harding, M. D., Plastic Surgeon, Harrisburg, Cloyd S. Harkins, D. D. S., and William R, Harkins, D. D. S., Prosthodontia and Ortho- dontia, Osceola Mills, Eugene T. McDonald, D. Ed., Speech Therapy, State College, and James H. Black- well, M. Ed., Psychologist, Cleartield. Consultants: James P. Scott, M. D., Medical Advisor, Harry G. Shaf- fer, M. D., Otolaryngologist, Clearfield, Thomas S. Mebane, M. D., Pediatrician. The Clinic Staff is as- sisted by Miss Mary Slegal, R. N., and Miss Mary E. Rowles, R. N., State Public Health Nurses, and Miss Vivian H. Matson, Secretary. QQ gmc Because of the need tor service in prevention of blindness in rural areas, the Department of Welfare, State Coun- cil for the Blind, inaugurated this service in 1938. Dr. William Angle of Williams- port had charge of the service, later Dr. H. Ford Clark of Huntingdon took charge. Many persons with cataracts, glau- come, medical and surgical eye condi- tions, receive treatment through this facility. An eFfort is made to assist each person who comes to the clinic to get the help needed in the treatment ot their eye condition. Quoting from the constitution the obiect was as follows: The purposes for which this association is formed are, to advance the standing and inter- ests of the graduates of the Training School for nurses of the Philipsburg State Hospital, to ex- tend aid to those in trouble, or sickness, and to promote social activity and good fellowship among its members, and to raise the standing of nursing to the highest plane. Our organization keeps in close contact with the American Nurses' Association and the Penn- sylvania State Nurses' Association by sponsoring student as well as graduate representation to national, state and district meetings. Monthly meetings are held by the Associa- tion the second Thursday of each month with certain special activities, annual White Elephant Party in January, a mother and daughter dinner in May, picnic in July and a dinner-dance for the graduating class in August. ln memory of Lieutenant Cecelia Ferlitch, who gave her life in World War Il, the Associa- tion presents an award to the most outstanding student nurse in the senior class. The Nurses' Alumnae Association of the Philipsburg State Hospital looks toward a future of service to the Training School and nurses of the hospital. There are 187 members attending the pre- sent monthly meetings of the Alumnae Associa- tion. Organized in 1922 it has made very valuable contributions to the welfare and equip- ment of the hospital. Among many of the con- tributions has been an Orthopedic Fracture Table in 1940. In the last three years they have given two lceless Oxygen Tents and a refrigerator for the Laboratory. This year they have as their proiect, the fixing up of the two sun porches to make them attractive as well as comfortable. At Christmas time besides providing gifts for the patients and favors for the trays, they sponsor the Annual Charity Ball, the proceeds being used for hospital equipment. Every Tuesday after- noon during the year a number of women of the Auxiliary go out to the sewing room and make different articles for the needs of the hos- pital. We were greeted the next morning with a cheery smile, words of welcome and settled into our routine of classes. Weeks passed into months and we suffered through the agonies of initiation, enjoyed the entertainments of the Halloween and Christmas parties. We climaxed the events of our pre-clinical period with capping exer- cises held on March 2, 1951. Soon after this classes ended and we enioyed a few summer weeks vacation at our respective homes. With the title of Juniors came new responsibilities and a more firm sense of determination to succeed and prove ourselves capable in our duties. Our class was separated for the first time in January 1952 when six members of the class left for Warren affiliations while others began serves in special departments. In January 1953 our class was reunited to begin our final year. Our Senior classes began at this time and ended in April. We donned our best for the dance at the country club given by Dr. Lester Luxenberg and his wife on June 25. Our remaining summer months were filled with many activities including the annual banquet and prom sponsored by the Nurses' Alumnae Association in August. We found new responsibilities and duties expected of us. It was new and frightening at first but as we grew, we found we could use our own intelligence and initiative to accept this respon- sibility. We had made a big step from starry eyed freshman. Now we felt we belonged to the hospital routine. A Special serves, which were once a far-away dream, became real as we took our place in special fields. Anxiously we waited our chance to use our ability in a new way. On December 28, we said goodbye to our first group of iuniors to leave for Warren State Hospital for three months affiliation. Now the time has drawn near to extend our most sincere congratulations to our older sisters, the seniors. We hope they may continue in good fortune in their future paths. May we offer our deepest thanks to them in helping us adiust to hospital routine and make a happy social contact. Their friendship has been enioyed and we have profited from it. On September 'I, 1952, twenty-eight eager and excited girls arrived at the nurses home. After chatting with our newly found friends, we went to bed-only to find a rather sleepless night ahead of us. The next day our classes began. We were greeted by what seemed an insurmountable stack of books. Then began the months of work and study such as we never dreamed could be. Later, we began our ward duty which became more interesting each day as we learned to assume more responsibility. Initiation night arrived! However, we had lots of fun and went to bed tired but happy. Then came the eagerly awaited Christmas vacation. Two weeks of free time to spend with our families and old friends were ours to enioy. Finally February 27, 1953 arrived--the momentous day when twenty-four of us received our caps. Our parents arrived, smiling and proud because of this new honor that we were re- ceiving. After the exercises, refreshments were served and we took our guests on a general tour of the nurses home.
