We have come in contact with him in many divisions of our hospital, especially the special services. No matter what the time may be, he is always there to lend a helping hand to those who may need him. This does not mean only the sick, for he has helped us greatly by simple explanations ot things we did not understand. Patience and consideration to all, are outstandingly noticed as he proceeds through the day. He has inspired many by his great knowledge and by showing confidence in those who assist him. Kindness, gentleness, calmness and cheerfulness go hand in hand with his keen sense of humor. And so with many thanks and great pleasure we make this dedi- cation. 7 Does it hurt? Teach me to profit by the suffering that comes across my path. Let me so use it that it may mellow me, not harden nor embitter me, that it may make me patient, not irritable, that it may make me broad in my forgiveness, not narrow, haughty, and overbearing. May no one be less good for having come within my influence. No one less sure, less true, less kind, less noble for having been a fellow-traveler in our journey toward Eternal Life. They assist the Superintendent in solving the problems that arise. They act as an intermediary between the hospital and the Departments of the Commonwealth in Harrisburg. Because of their varied experiences, the different members supply valuable information of a technical nature in regard to maior improvements to the hospital. The Private Duty Section was organized in T936 and to date includes twenty-eight members. The first obiective of this section is to pro- vide patients who need and desire individual attention, a specialized type of care which cannot be accomplished by hospital personnel. A second obiective is to attempt to solve the problems and improve the working conditions of the group of nurses who desire this field of nursing. ln the past year this section has made great strides toward the improvement of not only their individual nursing care but also the attempt has been made to build up the stand- ards of private duty nursing on state and na- tional levels as well as in the local group. The organization has an appointed chair- man and monthly meetings are held preceding the general alumnae meeting. Members of the section are active in assisting and planning for special functions in cooperation with the other alumni members. Private Duty congratulates the Class of 1952 and hope that some of you will ioin this section and be influential in carrying on the activities of the group and maintaining above all superior care for the sick and needy. ..,. 'L in 'N ' 1 eh K lj .. 9 ' Miss Martha Lee Maguire was born in Mor- risdale, Pennsylvania on September 27, 1911, attended school there and graduated in June, 1930. She entered training at Philipsburg State Hospital in September 1930, graduating from the school in 1933. During her years in training she experienced different conditions from those of today. The students worked 7 to 7 shift on days with 2 hours off. When working nights it was a straight 7 to 7 shift. She was accustomed to stay- ing on duty until the work was finished may it be 7 or 9 and worked the 2 hours off duty during many busy times. Miss Maguire worked at Philipsburg State Hospital as a graduate on general staff and worked for a while as relief supervisor. In 1938 she became supervisor of second floor which in- cluded Women's Floor fmedical and surgicalj, Pediatrics, Maternity. In 1942 a Pediatric super- visor was supplied. At the present time she has complete charge of the surgical wards. As a pastime Miss Maguire's interests in- clude reading, swimming, and sports. As advice to new students, Miss Maguire feels that if they follow instructors' and super- visors' instructions and remember that the patient comes first they will have no trouble with train- ing. E i ' x 51 A3 , . QQ 621450 The eye clinic, sponsored by the Depart- ment of Health, was first started at the Philips- burg State Hospital in T937 under the leader- ship of Dr. William Angle. In 1939, Dr. H. Fork Clark, Ophthalmologist of Huntingdon, Pa., was placed in charge of the clinic and with the assistance of Miss Frances Houck, R. N., has done great work in the treatment of both medi- cal and surgical conditions ofthe eyes as well as refractive errors. This clinic is a service of the hospital out- paitent department and is held weekly by appointment. 42 1fLe1fL1f1fL0fAe1f0Lloy Cgnic The pneumotherapy clinic operates in co- operation with the Bureau of Tuberculosis Control of the Pennsylvania State Department of Health. Here patients who have been re- leased from tuberculosis hospitals continue treatment while at home so that the condi- tion is kept under control. Treatment consists of the injection of air into the thoracic or peri- toneal cavity to collapse the lung and allow the infected area to heal. This clinic is held in the out-patient department of this hospital and is under the direction of Dr. George Taylor of Philipsburg with the assistance of Dr. Clark Forcey, Radiologist of Philipsburg, who does fluoroscopic examinations ofthe patients after each iniection so as to determine the amount of collapse and the amount of healing that takes place with each treatment. This clinic is held each Saturday morning. KLA pafafe CAVLTC The cleft palate clinic, a service of the Pennsylvania Department of Health, deals with those children who have cleft palate and cleft lip deformities. This clinic provides such pa- tients with cosmetic and correstive surgery, dental care and prosthesis as well as special speech therapy. The clinic is located in the out-patient de- partment of this hospital and is held every four weeks. The staFF is composed of Robert L. Harding, M. D., Plastic Surgeon of Harrisburg, Cloyd S. Harkins, D.D.S. and William R. Har- kins, D.D.S., Prosthodontists of Osceola Mills, Eugene McDonald, D. Ed., Speech Correctionist of State College, and James H. Blackwell, M. Ed., Psychologist of Clearfield. They are assisted by Miss Mary Slegal, R. N. and Miss Mary Elizabeth Rowles, R. N., State Public Health Nurses, and Miss Vivian Matson, Secre- tary. Ordaoloecfic Cgnic The orthopedic clinic, sponsored by the Centre and Clearfield Counties Society for Crippled Children, specializes in the treatment of children with crippling conditions resulting from birth, disease or accident. Some are cured completely, others cannot be helped, but to each and every one an effort is made to cure or improve his particular deformity. Dr. Royal L. Quoting from the Constitution the object was as follows: The purposes for which this association is formed are: to advance the standing and interests of the gradu- ates ofthe Training School for Nurses of the Philipsburg State Hospital, to extend aid to those in trouble or sick- ness, and to promote social activity and good fellowship among its members, and to raise the standing of nursing to the highest plane. Our organization keeps in close contact with the American Nurses Association and the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association by sponsoring student as well as graduate representation to national, state and district meetings. Monthly meetings are held by the Association on the second Thursday of each month-with certain special activities as: Annual White Elephant Party in January, Mother and Daughter Dinner in May, Picnic in July and Dinner and Dance for the graduating class in August. At Christmas time, besides providing Christ- mas gifts for patients, the Auxiliary sponsors the Annual Charity Ball, the proceeds of which are used for the hospital. She took it in her stride to help us with our problems-those which arose due to unfamiliarity to rules and regulations. Never did she act hastily in criticizing our mistakes but gave us a fair chance to explain our view points. It was in her interest that she learned our names, noticed and respected our differences, likes and dislikes as a group, even to the small task of taking extra time in closing our doors noise- lessly as she checked us each night. Many times each of us received a pep talk from her when we were de- pressed and unwisely thinking of leaving training. lt is with the kindness, under- standing and personal interest Mrs. Griest showed towards us that makes us deeply appreciative of her guidance through our days in training. Reflections was launched on her maiden voyage. There were thirty-six crew members with the captain, D. J. Smith. Life aboard ship was filled with many trying hours of instructions, study and practice in the sick bay. We ran into many storms, during one of these, a tidal wave washed six crew members overboard. Throughout this period our hopes remained high and on March 3 we pulled into a harbor where thirty crew members received their caps, the symbol of our profession. The first year of voyage we had many good times aboard ship, then came the time we all looked forward to-we were granted three weeks shore leave. In harbor, all embarked to their various destinations. After three weeks we were ready to begin our second voyage. The second year each crew member spent three months affiliating with crews of other ships aboard the S. S. Warren. On returning to our mother ship we discovered only 29 members, one had been lost at sea. The logbook recorded many activities during our third voyage, among these were bake sales, skating parties and dances. We were the first crew to introduce fatigue shirts bearing the title of our shore base, The Philipsburg State Hospital. On August 22 the S. S. Reflections pulled into port for the last time and weighed anchor. Each crew member was issued an honorable discharge and walked slowly down the gangplank to travel in the ways of their choosing. We are just beginning to perceive and fully appreciate our responsibilities. With the beginning of our Junior year came those special services good and bad. Predictions along this line have proved accurate. To us the highlight of this year has been our Christmas Party. This also marked the point at which our class was to be separated for the first time by the Warren affiliation. We wish to thank the seniors for their attitude in dealing with the lower classmen. They have never failed to make us feel as though we were a vital part ofthe hospital panorama. They unwittingly aided us socially as well as technically. How well we remember that first night, everything so strange and new! Our time was taken up mainly with classes for the first sev- eral months. Little did we realize what each graduate nurse has gone through before achieving her white uniform and pin. To lighten our course of study we were put through our paces at the initiation party held by the iuniors. Other social events, at which we participated, were held at various intervals throughout our preclinical period. The next outstanding event in our diary was capping exer- cises which took place February 29 in the Nurses Home. Upon receiving our caps the accomplishment of our first goal was realized.
