On the morning of December 31, 1951, a few short hours before the nation would usher in the New Year with typical celebrations and merrymaking, the USS Philippine Sea was the scene of intense activity. Here, moored to her dock at NAS San Diego, there was no thought of the coming revelry-in a few mo- ments the ship would depart, bound for the Far East and the Korean conflict. Members of her crew stood by the lines as final farewells were made between crewmen and loved ones below on the dock. Then the words HCast oil all lines -the long, single tone of a bugle de- noting the ship was no longer bound to her berth echoed out over the hushed crowd. The heavily-laden carrier moved slowly out into the bay, her rails lined with men seeking a final glimpse of wives, sweethearts and friends as they moved to the edge of the dock-faces became smaller with the increasing distance until they could no longer be identified-the Second Korean Cruise had begun. faces become smaller. . .
