-, 3 HISTORY OF USS PHILIPPINE SEA CV-47. The keel of this proud ship was laid on Au- gust 19, 1944, in the shipyard of the Bethle- hem Steel-Corporation at Quincy, Massachu- setts. On September 5, 1945, she was launched and christened 'aPhilippine Sea in honor of the First and Second Battles of the Philippine Sea, two of the greatest Naval battles of World War 11. Following her Hshakedownn cruise in the Caribbean Sea in the autumn of 1946, the uPhi1 Seaf' her usual nickname, reported to Boston to prepare for the expedition which was to take Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd to the Antarctic regions in January, 1947. The remainder of 1947 and the years of 1948 and 1949 saw the 4'Phi1 Sea operating in the At- lantic and Mediterranean with the Sixth Fleet. Before reporting to the Pacific in June of 1950, the Philippine Sea staged another shake- down cruise in the Caribbean. So many distin- guished guests were present on this cruise the crew began to call her the uShowboat and this nickname remained with her. On May 24, 1950, the 6'Phil Sea sailed from Norfolk, Virginia, and passed through the Panama Canal on lVlay 31, 1950. On June 10 she ar- rived at her new home port of San Diego, California. With the outbreak of hostilities in Korea the uPhil Sea, a welcome addition to the Pa- cific Fleet, was ordered to Pearl Harbor and the Western Pacific. On August 5, 1950, the Philippine Sea became the flagship of fast Carrier Task Force 77 and went into action off the coasts of Korea. Remaining in action for over 11 months, she set many combat rec- ords. The uShowboat finally returned to the United States in June, 1951, setting a new speed record for the trans-Pacific run while en route. After a delay to permit her crew to enjoy Christmas in the States, the HPhil Sea left for Pearl Harbor and the Western Pacific on De- cember 31, 1951, thus beginning the Second Korean Cruise for the MShowboat', and her seasoned crew ....
