. . the crew III The 3,000 officers and men on board comprised a crew of which many were returning to the Far East for the second time. However, veterans or not, each of them had a job to do. With the departure from San Diego, each group of specially trained men, or Divisions, set about those duties either in actuality or by way of simulated but realistic drills. Below decks in the shipis engine rooms M Division was on the job as the four massive screws drove us west- ward. On the bridge, N Division guided the ship by sun and stars, the navi- gators plotting our course toward Hawaii.

Main Gunnery Control Commence Firing! Mount Five lets loose Load! After the first few days of the voyage, in- tensified training began for the Gunnery De- partment. Drills Were conducted as the lst and 2nd Divisions manned the 5 Mounts and the 3rd, 4th and 6th Divisions took their stations on the 40 MM Mounts. Fire control directors, manned hy F-1 Division, searched for and tracked imaginary targets as they uattaekedn the ship.
