I hope in the days to come, when time has dulled the freshness of this cruise, that this book will bring a lightness to your heart and a feeling of gladness that you were a part of the story preserved in its pages. ' For each, this Cruise Book will evoke diiferent thoughts and different feelings. For me it will al- ways bring memories of seven tough but happy months of service that were made easy through the splendid spirit of the best crew and grandest ship of them all. The keel of this proud ship was laid on Au- gust 19, 1944, in the shipyard of the Bethle- hem Steel-Corporation at Quincy, Massachu- setts. On September 5, 1945, she was launched and christened 'aPhilippine Sea in honor of the First and Second Battles of the Philippine Sea, two of the greatest Naval battles of World War 11. Following her Hshakedownn cruise in the Caribbean Sea in the autumn of 1946, the uPhi1 Seaf' her usual nickname, reported to Boston to prepare for the expedition which was to take Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd to the Antarctic regions in January, 1947. The remainder of 1947 and the years of 1948 and 1949 saw the 4'Phi1 Sea operating in the At- lantic and Mediterranean with the Sixth Fleet. Before reporting to the Pacific in June of 1950, the Philippine Sea staged another shake- down cruise in the Caribbean. So many distin- guished guests were present on this cruise the crew began to call her the uShowboat and this nickname remained with her. On May 24, 1950, the 6'Phil Sea sailed from Norfolk, Virginia, and passed through the Panama Canal on lVlay 31, 1950. On June 10 she ar- rived at her new home port of San Diego, California. With the outbreak of hostilities in Korea the uPhil Sea, a welcome addition to the Pa- cific Fleet, was ordered to Pearl Harbor and the Western Pacific. On August 5, 1950, the Philippine Sea became the flagship of fast Carrier Task Force 77 and went into action off the coasts of Korea. Remaining in action for over 11 months, she set many combat rec- ords. The uShowboat finally returned to the United States in June, 1951, setting a new speed record for the trans-Pacific run while en route. After a delay to permit her crew to enjoy Christmas in the States, the HPhil Sea left for Pearl Harbor and the Western Pacific on De- cember 31, 1951, thus beginning the Second Korean Cruise for the MShowboat', and her seasoned crew .... ,im and Men Num. Here, moored to her dock at NAS San Diego, there was no thought of the coming revelry-in a few mo- ments the ship would depart, bound for the Far East and the Korean conflict. Members of her crew stood by the lines as final farewells were made between crewmen and loved ones below on the dock. Then the words HCast oil all lines -the long, single tone of a bugle de- noting the ship was no longer bound to her berth echoed out over the hushed crowd. The heavily-laden carrier moved slowly out into the bay, her rails lined with men seeking a final glimpse of wives, sweethearts and friends as they moved to the edge of the dock-faces became smaller with the increasing distance until they could no longer be identified-the Second Korean Cruise had begun. faces become smaller. . . . . the crew III The 3,000 officers and men on board comprised a crew of which many were returning to the Far East for the second time. However, veterans or not, each of them had a job to do. With the departure from San Diego, each group of specially trained men, or Divisions, set about those duties either in actuality or by way of simulated but realistic drills. X , From the Manchurian border to the stale- mated battle lines near the 38th parallel our planes hit the enemy. This was the period of the utruce talks, during which most of the Korean action was limited to preventing the enemy from building up his supplies. This We did with unrelenting intensity, pounding rail lines, marshalling yards, truck Fconvoys, and any other form of transportation the enemy was employing. Our Panther jets, Corsairs and Sky- raider dive bombers were called upon for a myriad of tasks in conjunction with this 'cinterdiction program. Whether it was air-spotting gunfire from naval ships bomharding coastal targets or going far inland on their own destructive sorties, the object was the same-stop the supplies. Bridges, tun- nels, by-passes-all Were hit time and again as the Reds repaired by night and our planes destroyed hy day.
